A rare genetic skin cnditin has been crrected fr the first time using a gene therapy that is applied t the skin.
Abut 1 in 800,000 children in the US are brn with a severe cnditin called recessive dystrphic epidermlysis bullsa (不良性大疱性表皮松解症 RDEB) that makes their skin extremely weak and likely t be trn and blister (长水疱).

That means their skin can’t prduce the cllagen prteins needed t give it structure and strength.
Peter Marinkvich at Stanfrd University in Califrnia and his clleagues develped a way t insert nrmal COL7A1 genes int the skin f such individuals s they can start prducing cllagen prperly. “All it des is g int the cell and deliver the gene,” says Marinkvich.
The gene therapy was then incrprated int a gel (凝胶) s it culd be applied t the skin. It was tested in a late-stage clinical experiment in the US invlving 31 children and adults with RDEB, including Mascli.
The treatment was repeated weekly until the wunds clsed. After three mnths, 71% f the wunds treated with the gene therapy had cmpletely healed, cmpared with 20% f thse wh had the ineffective gel applied, and there were n serius side effects.
