In his bk “Secnd Act”, Henry Oliver explres the ptential f thse later years fr smething mre than wisdm r the giving f valuable advice.
Cmbining bigraphical (传记的) descriptins with scientific research, Mr. Oliver tries t understand the nature f the late blmer (大器晚成者) and the ptential fr achievement later in life. We find ut hw the architect Frank Llyd Wright began with the Pennsylvania huse knwn as Fallingwater in his late 60s. The title f “Secnd Act” itself prves t be underselling what the bk has t ffer: Mr. Oliver is really ffering a guide t the brader principles that make a strng career. There is an imprtance t slw and steady prgress, t shwing up and ding the wrk. A chapter n aging explres hw an imprtant requirement f a successful career is simply t be cnsistent: t imprve, t try new things, and t keep creating utput. Achievement, he suggests, “isn’t reliant just n ur mental ability staying high but n whether we chse t keep using and adapting the capacity we have.”
S t, when we think abut ur careers — and ur lives mre bradly — we must adpt a humble attitude: We cannt predict the shape and path f ur careers, s we must make space in ur lives fr chance encunters, varius kinds f luck, and nnlinearity (非线性) t wrk fr us, rather than against us. This shws the idea f the “chas thery f careers,” accrding t which small influences can have an utsize and unexpected impact, and s we must be ready t make use f them.

      A. Ignre small influences in life.B. Predict a career path accurately.
      C. Chse careers based n interest.D. Be pen t unexpected pprtunities.
      11. What is the best title fr the text?
      A. Mre Chances with TimeB. Shw up at Any Age
      C. Better Late Than NeverD. The Older, the Cleverer
      D
Human nise pllutin is increasing and affecting ecsystems wrldwide. Mst f the research n the effects f nise n wild animals has lked at hw a ppulatin r species is affected, says Grace Blackburn, a PhD. candidate. Hwever, individual differences may enable sme animals t perfrm better than thers.
In a new study, Blackburn and her cwrkers fcused n hw differences in cgnitive (认知的) ability influence individual respnses t nise in a ppulatin f Australian magpies (喜鹊). These birds have been studied cnsistently since 2013.
First, the researchers fllwed 75 wild magpies fr 20-minute perids, nting all their behavirs and the presence f any human-made nise. Next, they cnducted playback experiments in which they bradcast magpie alarm calls with and withut the nise f planes in the backgrund t see hw the nise affected individuals’ anti-predatr (反捕食者) respnses. The final step was administering (实施) a cgnitive test t the magpies. The researchers used an assciative learning task in which the magpies had t assciate a specific clr with a fd reward. “The smarter the bird, the quicker they learn this assciatin,” says Blackburn.
Frm their bservatins, the researchers saw that lud human-made nises (such as planes) resulted in changes in the magpies’ behavir. In the presence f nise pllutin, the birds searched fr fd less, were less efficient at finding fd, sang less and spent mre time being n guard.
Hwever, Blackburn fund that cgnitin influenced hw magpies respnded t plane nise. Birds that perfrmed better in the assciative learning task were able t maintain their nrmal respnses t alarm calls, even when thse calls were played with nise.
“This is the first time that cgnitin has been linked t the ability f an animal t deal with humanmade nise,” Blackburn says. As the human ppulatin cntinues t grw and expand, understanding the rle f cgnitin in hw animals deal with envirnmental changes culd prve useful in helping prtect nt nly Australian magpies but ther affected wildlife.
      12. Hw did the researchers measure the magpies’ intelligence?
      A. By uncvering their ppulatin expansin secrets.
      B. By testing their clr-fd assciatin skills.
      C. By assessing their strategies when fighting predatrs.
      D. By bserving their reactins t alarm calls.
      13. In what way were the magpies affected by plane nise?
      A. They lst their hearing.B. They made luder sunds.
      C. They wrked tgether t seek fd.D. They watched fr threats mre clsely.
      14. What can be inferred abut the smarter magpies?
      A. They culd handle the nise better.B. They culd identify different planes.
      C. They had mre defensive habits.D. They preferred t sing with thers.
      15. Hw des the authr find applying cgnitin study t animal prtectin?
      A. Objective.B. Ineffective.C. Significant.D. Challenging.
