In a later study, by scanning (扫描) the brains f 40 teens and adults, Steinberg fund the brains f teenagers, but nt adults, shwed greater activity in tw regins assciated with rewards when they were being bserved by same-age peers. The reward systems f the brain are activated whenever peple experience smething rewarding, like eating a nice-tasting fd, which make them feel satisfied. In this case, rewards are greater fr teens, which mtivates them t seek higher-risk experiences.
But Steinberg thught peer pressure might als have its psitive side. In the latest study, Steinberg’s team used a card game t research hw peers affect the way yung peple gather and apply infrmatin. It invlved 101 teenage bys wh played either alne r with three peers. They chse cards frm fur decks (牌堆): tw decks had “gd” cards, and tw “bad” nes. Players with peers were mre willing t take risks, trying t figure ut which decks culd help them t win. Remarkably, the scientists gt the same result even when the plants were separated by black plastic s that they culd nt exchange light r chemical signals.
The scientists said the study is grundbreaking but still in its early days, and admitted there are still many unanswered questins. Fr example, are plants intentinally (有意地) cmmunicating with ne anther? And if they are, d they all speak in a universal (通用的) “plant language”? T these questins and mre, Gaglian said, the answer is “we dn’t knw”.
Gaglian thinks learning the secrets f plant cmmunicatin culd have practical applicatins (应用) that culd benefit humans. She imagines farmers using music t encurage r discurage the grwth f certain plants, reducing the need fr pesticides.
Study c-authr Rentn warned, hwever, that the effects in their study were fairly small. “Whether it wuld be ecnmically viable (经济上可行的),” he said, “fr a farmer t play music t get that little extra grwth speed, I think it’s pintless and cstly.”
