A study led by a researcher frm the Chinese Academy f Sciences’ Nanjing Institute f Gelgy and Palentlgy has updated the fssil (化石) recrd f msquites (蚊子) by nearly 30 millin years and has discvered that ancient male msquites als fed n bld.
The study was published nline n Mnday in the jurnal Current Bilgy, which discvered the ldest-knwn msquit fssils --- tw males dating back 130 millin years near the twn f Hammana in Lebann.
Dany Azar, wh led the study, said the fssils nt nly tld us the ancient rigins f msquites but als their feeding habits during the early stages f their grwth. “We find that the msquit grup is develping, which gives us an idea abut their behavir f feeding n bld” said Azar, wh has been wrking n the subject fr mre than 25 years.
Befre the recent findings and their study, nly female msquites were knwn t feed n bld, which they need fr prtein t prduce their eggs. Males, which lack skin-piercing (刺入皮肤的) muthparts, mstly feed n hney and plant juices.
