Mrs. Masn was “the perfect reading ambassadr,” said Sandra Martin-Chang, recalling an early reading rle mdel, her high schl English and drama teacher. “She encuraged me t read excellent bks with great stry lines. We read The Handmaid's Tale, and it was fabulus…We’d imagine it first and then think abut hw t stage it and bring it t life.”
Nw a prfessr f educatin at Cncrdia University, Martin-Chang studies hw reading strybks and nvels influences cgnitive (认知的) develpment.
In a new study published in Reading and Writing, she and her clleagues fund significant differences between students wh read fr pleasure utside f class and thse wh primarily read bks t satisfy schl assignments. Nt nly was there a pwerful link between reading fr fun and strnger language skills, but students wh disliked reading frequently wed their negative utlk t experiences they had in classrms. T much emphasis n analyzing the cmpsitinal nuts and blts f texts and reading merely t absrb infrmatin came at a psychlgical cst, the researchers fund, as students disengaged frm vluntary reading.
But analyzing the elements f gd writing — hw persuasin wrks, hw figurative language can enhance texts — is essential t teaching kids the full range f their expressive ptential, and Martin-Chang isn’t suggesting that we read nly fr fun. “Cmpetence is very, very imprtant. We can’t skip straight t bks children lve withut teaching them hw t d it right,” she said. She likens reading t eating a well-balanced diet: “The peple wh say chclate is gd fr yu dn't recmmend eating it t the exclusin f all ther things.”
Fr Martin-Chang reading fr pleasure isn’t a departure frm demanding academics — it’s a rewarding frm f cgnitive exercise, ne that is bth enjyable and intellectually beneficial. “Offer mre chice,”| said Martin-Chang. Intrduce students t Rme and Juliet, but give them the ptin t read The Fault in Our Stars as well; let them read cmic bks, sprts writing and plays, sci-fi and hrrr nvels. In ther wrds, t build literacy skills, it’s better fr them t cnsume dzens f texts that they lve, cnnect with, r feel inspired by, instead f reluctantly reading ne because it’s assigned.
28. What rle des Mrs. Masn play in Martin-Chang’s grwth?

Urban areas suffer frm heat islands. While trees ffer natural cling, many cities lack sufficient greenery. Btanists prpse a slutin: miniature frests engineered fr rapid grwth.
Traditinal eclgical success prgresses frm grasses t shrubs (灌木) t mature trees ver decades. The Miyawaki methd skips the early phases and jumps directly t planting species fund in a mature wd. Practitiners select arund 100 lcal species thrugh field surveys. Using a wide mix f species, nt all f them trees, is imprtant. Mst plantatins, having been created fr cmmercial purpses, are mncultures. But trees, shrubs and grund-cvering herbs all cexist in natural frests, and the Miyawaki versins have this frm the start, encuraging the plants t grw faster.
Gardeners gather seeds and plant them at randm, rather than in rws. The seedlings have t fight fr sunlight, s nly the fastest-grwing survive. Trees planted in this way can sht up as much as 14% mre rapidly than nrmal. Gardens are tended fr three years, then becme self-sustaining, maturing in decades. Gardeners are nt limited t fllw nature’s recipe bk t the letter. Miyawaki frests can be tailred t lcal requirements.
Mr Sharma, a leading advcate f the Miyawaki methd, has brught his experience building cars t bear n the questin f tree planting, wh is particularly ht n time and mtin. He has measured hw lng, n average, it takes t plant each srt f seed r seedling and uses that infrmatin t schedule their swing. His firm has created ver a hundred frests in ten cuntries in this way. It has als inspired at least 15 imitatrs (模仿者), in places as diverse as Australia, Chile and Iran.
What Mr Sharma and thers like him ffer lks like a mdern versin f the 19th-century mvements that brught city parks and their assciated health benefits t the industrializing West. In thse days the prevailing attitude twards nature was t try t tame it, and the parks created reflect that in their cntrlled, frmal design. Nw, greenery and envirnmentalism are the fashin, and the wild-like Miyawaki apprach reflects this perfectly. The purpse is the same as befre — t intrduce rus in urbe. But the means are cmpletely in tune with the times.
32. Accrding t Miyawaki methd, which is helpful fr rapid frest grwth?
A. Intrducing nn-native mature species.B. Cpying early successin stages.
C. High-density cmpetitive planting.D. Mnculture frest establishment.
33. What des Mr. Sharma’s apprach emphasize?
A. Industrial-like efficiency.B. Inflexible natural prcesses.
C. Setting mdels fr fllwers.D. Awareness f frest prtectin.
34. Hw has urban greening changed since the 19th-century?
A. Health benefits f parks are cnsidered.B. Frm managing it t wrking with nature.
C. Awareness f green cities has arisen.D. Perfect appearance is nw the primary fcus.
35. What des “rus in urbe” in the last paragraph prbably mean?
A. Creating neatly arranged landscape.B. Making the city frest wilder.
C. Pursuing creative natural design.D. Bringing nature int cities.

Back hme I fund David lying in his bed, sbbing and unwilling t eat r sleep. S disheartened was I t see David curled up n his bed, hugging his picture f Tippy. I wanted t cmfrt him, but hw? After all, I was the ne wh had given away his belved dg. A prfund silence and sadness replaced the previus chas in the huse. It was in this quiet grief that I had my revelatin: a neat and rderly huse was a pr substitute fr a happy ne filled with laughter, running, and jyful barks. My heart, nce divided, was nw whle in its desire. I had been merely willing t have Tippy back; nw, I wanted her back fr David.
When I tk Tippy back t ur dr, she ran straight fr David. Like a nail drawn t a magnet, she zmed twards David s excitedly and happily. What a blending f flesh and fur, arms and paws, legs and a tail! David kept saying, “Oh, Tippy, h, Tippy,” and Tippy kept yipping and lapping David’s face. Then all f us were hugging and crying as Tippy gave us lving licks. Did peace, beauty and rder return t ur husehld? N, nt exactly, but lve and laughter did. And I can say with my whle heart, I’m glad!
