In a wrld where cnstant infrmatin and screen time dminate daily life, a grwing number f yung adults are chsing smething extreme: unplugging.
The Offline Club, a rapidly expanding mvement that prmtes phne-free gatherings, is ffering digital-free spaces where real-wrld cnnectin replaces virtual engagement — and it’s catching n fast. Launched by three Dutch funders, the club started as a small initiative in the Netherlands and has nw spread t majr cities including Lndn, Paris, Milan, Cpenhagen, Berlin, and mst recently, Buffal, New Yrk.
Their missin is simple: “Exchange screen time fr real time.” The cncept? Phnes and laptps are checked at the dr, and attendees spend a few hurs reading, meditating (冥想), clring, playing bard games, r simply talking — withut the digital nise. Frm sftly lit churches in Lndn t cmfrtable bicycle cafés in Buffal, the venues are as thughtfully curated as the cnversatins they inspire.
Fr 20-year-ld Jayren Malijan, wh attended a sessin in West Hampstead, Lndn, the experience was abut mre than just discnnecting — it was abut rediscvering human cnnectin. “I came t make new friends,” he shared. “Peple cmplain that they’re lnely, but they’re nt willing t g ut and make an effrt.” Malijan, wh typically spends time nline recmmending perfumes (香水) n “fragrancetk”, believes the veruse f smartphnes is cntributing t increased intrversin (内向) and weakened scial skills, especially amng the yunger generatin.
This feeling is shared by many. Accrding t a 2024 survey by the British Standards Institutin, nearly 70% f peple aged 16 — 21 reprted feeling wrse after spending time n scial media, and nearly half said they wished they had grwn up in a pre-internet era.
At Offline Club events, the cntrast is striking. Peple wh usually average ver 10 hurs f daily screen time — like YuTuber Taz Alam — speak f relief, nt anxiety, when parted frm their phnes. “Everyne here is s lvely,” Alam said. “Yu can just g up t smene yu dn’t knw and start a cnversatin. It feels s easy and natural.”
      24. What des the secnd paragraph mainly describe?
      A. A new scial trend.B. A charity rganizatin.
C An advanced technique.D. An awareness campaign.
      25. What des the wrd “curated” underlined in paragraph 3 mean?
      A. Avided.B. Replaced.C. Organized.D. Measured.
      26. What’s ne functin f the Offline Club accrding t Malijan?
      A. Reslving cnflicts.B. Meeting ld friends.
      C. Prmting business sales.D. Expanding the scial circle.
      27. What’s Taz Alam’s attitude twards the Offline Club?
      A. Critical.B. Appreciative.C. Dubtful.D. Uncertain.

T keep a Hula-Hp alft (悬浮) with rbts, it helps t be in shape — literally. Experiments with hp-slinging rbts have revealed hw these rings stay up despite the pull f gravity. The shape f the rbt’s bdy is a crucial factr, researchers reprt in the Jan. 7 Prceedings f the Natinal Academy f Sciences. The shape needs t have “hips” — a slpe (斜面) that prvides upward frce t balance gravity. And a “waist” arch — like an hurglass (沙漏) — keeps the hp frm mving up r dwn and sliding ff.
Inspired by perfrmers near his hme in Greenwich Village, applied mathematician Leif Ristrph f New Yrk University began cnsidering the physics f Hula-Hps. Previus studies, he and his cwrkers realized, hadn’t explained hw the hp stays alft.
S Ristrph and his cwrkers gave it a try. In experiments, a circling cylindrical rbt culdn’t keep a hp frm sliding dwn. It was missing the essential upward frce, generated when a hp swings ver a slped shape. But a cne-shaped rbt, with a slpe but n waistlike curve, als failed. If the hp began tward the tp f the cne, the upward frce verpwered gravity, and the hp wuld mve up. If the hp began tward the bttm, the upward frce wasn’t enugh t keep it alft, and it mved dwn. But an hurglass-shaped rbt kept a hp stably alft.
Peple shuld be able t hula-hp regardless f the bdy shape, by adapting their gyratins (旋转) based n psitin changes f the hp. Indeed, the researchers were able t get a cne-shaped rbt t hula-hp by adjusting the rate f gyratin depending n hw high the hp slid.
A crrect launch was als essential in the experiments. If the hp started ff t slw, the attempt wuld fail. In successful sessins, the hp lined up with the gyrating bdy, s that the hp and the bdy always shifted in the same directin. “That’s als the best way t launch a hp,” Ristrph says.
“We were surprised that an activity as ppular, fun, and healthy as hula hping wasn’t understd even at a basic physics level,” says Ristrph. “As we made prgress n the research, we realized that the math and physics invlved are very subtle.”
      28. Which bdy shape is ideal fr Hula-Hping accrding t the experiment?
      A. Cne-shaped.B. Hurglass-shaped.C. Rund.D. Cylindrical.
      29. What is the message implied in the furth paragraph?
      A. Hula-hping can help shape peple’s bdy gradually.
      B. Rbts are flexible in learning human bdy mvements.
      C. Anyne can d hula-hping by adjusting their mvements.
      D. A perfect bdy shape is required t be a gd hula-hp player.
      30. What was essential fr a successful Hula-Hp launch in the experiments?
      A. Starting with the right shape.B. Oppsite mvement f the hp and the bdy.
      C. Using a hp f the prper size.D. Same directinal shifts f the hp and the bdy.
      31. Which can be used as a prper title fr the text?
      A. Scientists Identify the Perfect Hula Hp “Bdy Type”
      B. Hula-hping Inspires NYU Mathematicians
      C. Hw D Hula Hps Benefit Our Health?
      D. What D Hula Hps D fr Yur Bdy?
      D
Behaviural eclgist Mickey Pard and his cwrkers used machine learning t discver that wild African elephants have what seem t be names. That is, they address ther elephants with vcalizatins specific t the individual.
Researchers already knew that the animals make lw rumbling (咕哝) sunds that differ depending n whether they’re ut f sight f ne anther r in clse cntact, as well as whether a mther is interacting with her child. Pard and his cwrkers saw that elephants wuld react t sme calls while ignring thers.
T see whether thse calls that received a respnse were unique, they trained a machine-learning mdel with vcalizatins that researchers had labelled as generating a reactin. The algrithm(算法)learnt the sund features f thse calls, and was then tasked with sptting thse features in new calls and predicting the intended recipient.
“The cmputer crrectly matched the calls t the recipient 27.5% f the time, which might nt seem like that much, but yu have t remember that we wuldn’t expect elephants t use names in every call,” Pard says. By cntrast, a mdel trained with randm features was right nly 8% f the time. The team prved that these calls were meaningful t the elephants by playing back recrdings f them and checking which animal respnded.
Pard wuld like t use the same techniques t see whether he can decde (破译) any ther elephant vcabulary, such as terms fr lcatins. Elephants make certain calls when they’re trying t get their grup mving. If sme f thse sunds identify mvement twards a particular place, researchers might be able t identify thse with AI. T cnfirm their findings, the researchers culd then play back that call and watch where the elephants g.
In a separate study, Pard and his c-authrs recrded calls frm elephants in tw ppulatins in Kenya. The researchers then used machine learning t shw that there were clear vcal differences between the tw ppulatins, as well as slight differences between elephants in different scial grups within the tw ppulatins.
      32. What is believed t cause changes in African elephant rumbles?
      A. Amunt f fd in sight.B. Distance between family members.
      C. Distributin f fd surces.D. Water areas in the surrundings.
      33. Hw did researchers cnfirm that certain calls were directed t the intended elephants?
      A. By analyzing the tne f the calls.
      B. By cmparing calls frm different species.
      C. By bserving their respnse t recrdings.
      D. By training them t react t specific sunds.
      34. Elephants’ calls fr lcatins might be prven by AI while they are ________.
      A. feedingB. restingC. fightingD. mving
      35. What can we infer frm the last paragraph?
      A. Elephants’ calls have scial characteristics.
      B. Measures are key t African elephants' prtectin.
      C. Elephants’ language is sure t be decded by AI.
      D. Elephants share scial relatins like thse f humans.

My grandparents recunted tales frm their wn childhds, ften filled with laughter and nstalgia (怀旧). These stries didn’t just entertain; they cnnected me t a heritage (传统) that seemed bth ancient and ever-present. In thse hurs f sharing, I frmed a deep appreciatin fr where I came frm, as each stry brught values and lessns that still guide my decisins and chices tday.
As I grew lder, I began t take a mre active rle in these gatherings. I learned t recreate the family recipes, carefully memrizing each step just as my mther and grandmther had dne befre me. The kitchen, nce a place f mystery and delicius fds, became my classrm. I discvered that each ingredient (配料) had a purpse, and each flavr had a memry. The cinnamn in the spiced tea reminded me f quiet afternns with my grandfather, while the rasted lamb brught back images f my aunt singing sftly as she prepared the marinade (卤汁). Cking became a way fr me t express lve, gratitude and a deep sense f belnging.
As the years passed, ur family traditins cntinued, mixing the ld with the new. One winter, my yunger sister, Mia, prpsed an idea: “Why dn’t we create a family ckbk with all ur recipes — and include the stries behind them?” Her enthusiasm spread quickly t everyne arund her. We spent the entire hliday writing handwritten ntes and sticking phts alngside each recipe. Hwever, we didn’t have any phts f ur grandparents.
