which he watched every Sunday night. He als kept grcery lists fr his mini-fridge—Pepsi, cffee, heavy cream—and daily tasks. These ntes filled small ntebks, always near his reading chair. He wrte them until December 31, 2004, when cancer stpped him. After his death, I gathered the ntebks int a bx. Fr years, I culdn’t bear t pen them.
Brn in 1927 in Lwell, Massachusetts, my father was the sn f a leather factry wrker and grandsn f an Irish immigrant wh cleaned hrse manure frm the streets. Despite his humble beginnings, he was brilliant. After a summer in the leather factry, he graduated high schl at 16 and went n t Bstn Cllege. He served in Wrld War II and later earned degrees in physics. Then he wrked at MIT’s Lincln Labratry, mved his family frm Lwell t Bstn, and sent his kids t private clleges. It seemed he had left Lwell behind — but nt s. Deep
dwn, he saw himself simply as a wrking-class Lwell kid wh had just read a lt f bks.
He didn’t travel much, and didn’t feel the need. When I asked if he regretted nt seeing the wrld, he defended himself: “I’ve sailed the Atlantic in strmy winds, climbed the Himalayas, and stared dwn wild animals.” Then he added, “I read.” Bks were his wrld. Frm them, he learned t survive landslides, shark attacks, and even grilla attacks. He had what he called “a rich inner life”— and it was true.
Shrtly befre his death, he pened a small purple ntebk and began ne last list. It described details frm 1930s Lwell — things lst in time. Twenty years later, I fund it. In his flwing handwriting, Dad reached back t Lwell — a time lng gne, nw captured nly in memry. Lst and nly in memry — that was hw I was experiencing Dad nw. Squinting my eyes, I saw nt just the city he lved, but the quiet, extrardinary man I called Dad.

Scientists have identified neurns (神经元) in an ancient part f the brain that cntrl when yu stp eating a meal, at least in rdents (啮齿动物). The researchers discvered that chlecystkinin (胆囊收缩素) (CCK) neurns, which are fund in the brain stem, ne f the ldest parts f the brain-cmbine varius signals prduced as we eat,
causing us t feel full and nt want t take anther bite. The feeding signals these neurns respnd t relay infrmatin like hw much fd is detected by receptrs in the muth, hw full the stmach is and hw high the levels f different hunger signalling hrmnes in the bld are. The new research is still in its early stages, having nly been cnducted in mice s far.
The team fcused n the brain stems f mice t build n research in rdents dating back t the 1970s, which hinted that the brain stem culd play a rle in regulating feelings f fullness. Hwever, which particular cells within this regin did this and hw was unclear. T see hw CCK neurns may influence eating, the scientists genetically mdified mice s that their CCK neurns culd be switched n and ff using light in lab experiments. They fund that when these neurns were activated, the mice ate smaller meals cmpared t unmdified mice, and the extent f activatin determined hw quickly the mdified mice stpped eating.
The findings suggest that CCK neurns regulate hw much mice eat during a given meal, the team cncluded. If equivalent neurns are fund in the human brain stem, the findings culd theretically lead t the develpment f new treatments fr cnditins like besity. This idea was supprted by separate experiments cnducted in the same study, in which the team discvered that muse CCK neurns can be activated by a drug called Exendin-4, which caused the mice t stp eating. Exendin-4 is in the same class f drugs as Ozempic and Wegvy, which are becming increasingly ppular fr the treatment f type 2 diabetes and besity, respectively. Whether used alne r alngside ther medical interventins, these findings culd prvide a pathway fr clinically regulating eating behaviur and pssibly fr develping weight-reducing drugs. But these findings in rdents must first be extended t peple.
Which f the fllwing can best describe CCK neurns?
Taste detectrs.B. Decisin makers.
C. Hunger killers.D. Signal rganizers.
What’s the key difference between genetically mdified mice and nrmal nes accrding t Paragraph 2?
Nrmal mice gt Exendin-4 injectins.
Mdified mice had mre hunger hrmnes.
Nrmal mice had changed brain stem structures.
Mdified mice had CCK neurns cntrlled by light.
Why des the authr mentin a drug called Exendin-4?
T challenge existing findings.
T indicate ptential applicatins.
T suggest immediate effectiveness.
T highlight experimental limitatins.
Which f the fllwing culd be a prper title f the passage?
Ancient Brain Regin Cntrls Meal Size
New Drugs Target Brain’s Hunger Neurns
CCK Neurns Can Cure Obesity in Humans
D Muse Study Reveals CCK Neurns’ Structure

D
Universities have bmed in recent decades. In thery, universities shuld be an excellent surce f prductivity grwth. In practice, hwever, the great expansin f higher educatin has cincided with a prductivity slwdwn. A new paper by Ashish Arra and his clleagues, suggests that universities’ rapid grwth and the rich wrld’s stagnant prductivity culd be tw sides f the same cin.
The new paper makes a subtle but devastating suggestin: that when it came t delivering prductivity gains, the ld, big-business mdel f science wrked better than the new, university-led ne. Bradly, they find that scientific breakthrughs frm public institutins “elicit little r n respnse frm established crpratins” ver a number f years. A researcher in a university lab might publish brilliant papers after brilliant paper, pushing the frnt f a discipline. Often, hwever, this has n impact n crpratins’ wn publicatins, their patents r the number f scientists that they emply. And this, in turn, pints t a small impact n ecnmy-wide prductivity.
Why d cmpanies struggle t use ideas prduced by universities? The lss f the crprate lab is ne part f the answer. Such institutins were hme t a lively mixture f thinkers and ders. In the 1940s Bell Labs had the interdisciplinary team f chemists, metallurgists and physicists necessary t slve the verlapping theretical and practical prblems assciated with develping the transistr. That crss-cutting expertise is nw largely gne. Anther part f the answer cncerns universities. Free frm the demands f crprate verlads, research fcuses mre n satisfying geeks’ curisity r bsting citatin cunts than n finding breakthrughs that will change the
wrld r make mney. In mderatin, research fr research’s sake is n bad thing; sme breakthrugh technlgies, such as penicillin, were discvered almst by accident. But if everyne is arguing ver hw many angels dance n the head f a pin, the ecnmy suffers.
When higher-educatin institutins d prduce wrk that is mre relevant t the real wrld, the cnsequences are trubling. As universities prduce mre fresh PhD graduates, cmpanies seem t find it easier t invent new stuff. Yet universities’ patents have an ffsetting effect, prvking crpratins t prduce fewer patents themselves. It is
pssible that existing businesses, wrried abut cmpetitin frm university spinffs, cut back n research and develpment (R&D) in that field. Althugh n ne knws fr sure hw these ppsing effects balance ut, the authrs pint t a net decline in crprate patenting f abut 1.5% a year. The vast fiscal resurces devted t public science, in ther wrds, prbably make businesses acrss the rich wrld less innvative.
Perhaps, with time, universities and the crprate sectr will wrk tgether mre prfitably. And crprate researchers, rather than universities, are driving the current generative AI innvatin bm: in a few cases, the crprate lab has already risen frm the ashes. At sme pint, thugh, gvernments will need t ask themselves hard questins. In a wrld f weak ecnmic grwth, generus public supprt fr universities may cme t seem an unjustifiable luxury.
Accrding t the text, Arra and his clleagues find that .
universities have lng been an imprtant surce f prductivity grwth
universities’ scientific utputs dn’t really impact established crpratins
university-led mdel f science is delivering fewer scientific breakthrughs
big businesses are slw t absrb innvative ideas prduced by universities
Bell Labs are mentined in the text t .
hnr their key cntributins t scientific develpment
highlight a successful crprate-university partnership
indicate the essential cmpnents f successful crprate labs
murn the bygne days f multidisciplinary crprate research
What des the wrd “ffsetting” prbably mean?
A. weakeningB. bstingC. stabilizingD. disrupting
Which f the fllwing statements will the authr mst likely agree with?
Universities shuld expand their cllabratin with crpratins.
Universities shuld play a bigger rle in develping generative AI.
The gvernment shuld put in effrt t revive crprate labs.
The gvernment shuld reduce public supprt fr universities.

Many peple think a gd learner must keep steady fcus. Yet new studies shw the ppsite. When the mind gently drifts, it can still absrb facts. Mre imprtantly, it can cnnect them in fresh ways. This prcess, called inferential learning, lets us g beynd the given facts and reach new cnclusins. 16
Mind-drifting gives the brain extra time. Suppse a student hears that plants bend tward light. 17
Neurns repeat the pattern withut effrt. This hidden rehearsal strengthens memry traces and keeps the dr pen fr later links.
Drifting invites remte assciatins. During a break, the same student may recall her kitchen windw, where the basil plant leans each mrning. Tw scenes—classrm and kitchen—meet in her mind. Frm this mix she may infer that light directin, nt just sunlight itself, guides plant grwth. 18 Hwever, fcused study rarely allws such
lse pairing f places and times.
A wandering mind tests rules in private. While the teacher mves t the next tpic, the student's thughts may run a quick test: "If the light cmes frm belw, will the stem still bend up?" 19 These quiet experiments
sharpen understanding and prepare the learner fr real tests later.
20 They frget that cntrlled wandering is nt the same as chas. Learners can set sft brders: after
twenty minutes f hard wrk, they allw five minutes f gentle drift. In this windw, the mind rams but stays near the tpic. The result is deeper insight withut lst time.
Critics may say distractin wastes time.
Mind-wandering breaks cgnitive barriers.
N lab is needed; the brain runs a silent mdel.
This randm access generates innvative ideas.
The leap is small, but it is new knwledge built n her wn.
A wandering mind, it turns ut, is a quiet helper in this wrk.
While her eyes lk ut f the windw, her brain keeps the idea alive.

When he tk part in lcal chess matches, he was frequently underestimated. The turnament hall was filled with nisy peple. The ther players, armed with better resurces and prfessinal training, laughed at his simple techniques.
In ne particular turnament, as he sat at the table fr his first game, he culd feel the eyes n him. His ppnent made quick and decisive pening mves. Jacksn, thugh nervus, fcused hard. But sn, he fund himself in a difficult psitin as his ppnent’s pieces advanced aggressively. He lst the game and was very disappinted.
