During WWII, mre than 44,000 native Americans jined the US armies. Amng them was a select grup f “cde talkers” wh used a secure cmmunicatins system relying n Diné Bizaad, the fficial language f the Navaj Natin, t send secret messages. The cde, never brken by enemy frces, played a decisive rle in key victries during the war and, ultimately, helped save thusands f lives.
Tday, nly tw f the “cde talkers” are still alive: Thmas Begay, nw arund 101 years ld, and Peter MacDnald, 97. As the 80th anniversary (周年纪念日) f WWII’s end nears, they shared with Natinal Gegraphic abut the secret peratin that changed military histry frever.
“During Wrld War I, the US military used similar strategies t cnfuse German frces, relying primarily n Chctaw, Cherkee, H-Chunk, Cmanche, and Osage speakers,” said Begay. “Largely unwritten and with few published reference surces, these native languages were nearly impssible fr enemies t figure ut what was being said.”
The strategy prved s effective during WWI that military researchers and linguists began studying ther native languages t prepare fr future cnflicts. What they discvered was that Diné Bizaad was exceptinally difficult t decde withut deep cultural knwledge.
“Because f the unfamiliarity f the culture, the enemy was even unable t crrectly break the wrds int syllables (音节),” explained Peter MacDnald. “Cmputers culd nt have cracked the cde. All cmputers culd have dne was detect patterns.”
The cde talkers prgram remained secret until 1968, when the US gvernment finally declassified it as part f a brader effrt t acknwledge the cntributins f minrity grups during the war and t allw the “cde talkers” t share their stries fr the first time. Rnald Begay, a retired US Army fficer, recalled what his father tld the family in 2002 when they were watching the newly released mvie, Windtalkers, “‘I was ne f them,’ he simply said.”

Frm wearable devices t smartphnes, it has never been easier fr us t track ur daily physical activity, r lack f it. But just hw much shuld we aim fr if we want t live a lnger and healthier life? Tw recent studies suggest that walking 7,000 steps per day is a gd target.
“Specifically, ur research shws that the decreased risk f dying appeared t plateau ut at abut 7,000 steps,” says Meldy Ding, a prfessr f public health at the University f Sydney, wh is the latest researcher t dive int the evidence, as part f an effrt t update the physical activity guideline in her cuntry. “There were still sme imprvements fr thse wh tk mre than 7,000 steps, but the added health benefits acrss the ppulatin became smaller and smaller.”
Ding’s team reviewed data cllected frm mre than 160,000 adults arund the wrld n the link between step cunt and a variety f health utcmes. Here was ne f the key findings: Taking 7,000 steps per day was assciated with nearly a 50% lwer risk f dying, cmpared with the bare minimum f 2,000 steps.
“It definitely desn’t d harm if yu g beynd 7,000,” Ding adds. “S fr anyne wh’s already ding 10,000 and mre, there is n pint f ging back, but fr the flks wh are finding it hard t get there, 7,000 culd be a really realistic target.”
Ding’s research als shws that, n the lwer end, even mdest jumps can have a majr impact n ur well-being. Fr example, simply jumping frm 2,000 t 4,000 times in a day was accmpanied by nearly a 36% lwer risk f dying.
Ding and her team have als tried t pin dwn whether speed makes a difference. Here, the new study culd nt make any definitive cnclusin. “We actually didn’t see an assciatin nce we cnsidered the ttal number f steps,” says Ding. “S, essentially, the ttal number f steps r jumps, regardless f hw fast they were ding, seemed t have a benefit,” she says.
Amanda Paluch, wh has been wrking n step cunt and health benefits, has reached a similar cnclusin, thugh her wrk suggests the targets may als vary with age. “We were seeing that ld peple did nt seem t need as many steps cmpared t yung adults,” says Paluch.

Last week, Amazn CEO Andy Jassy sent an email t his emplyees warning that artificial intelligence culd displace them. “We will need fewer peple ding sme f the current jbs,but mre peple ding ther types f jbs,” he wrte.

The real danger is that t much reliance n AI culd lead t a generatin f yung peple unequipped fr the jbs f the future because they have never learned t think creatively r critically.
The brain cntinues t develp and mature int ne’s mid-20s, but like a muscle, it needs t be exercised and challenged t grw strnger. Technlgy, especially AI, can blck this develpment by ding the wrk that the brain is expected t d.
A study last year analyzed brain electrical activity f university students during the activities f handwriting and typing. Thse wh were handwriting shwed higher levels f neural(神经) activatin acrss mre brain regins. “Whenever handwriting mvements are included as a learning strategy, mre f the brain gets stimulated, resulting in the frmatin f mre cmplex neural netwrk cnnectivity,” the researchers nted. “Hwever, mst students in clleges and many in high schls use AI tls t take ntes and summarize lectures.”
Why cmmit infrmatin t memry when AI tls can prvide answers at ur fingertips? Fr ne thing, the brain can’t draw cnnectins between ideas that aren’t there. Nthing cmes frm nthing. Creativity desn’t happen unless the brain is engaged.
Cllege and high-schl students als increasingly use AI tls t write papers, perfrm mathematical prfs, and create cmputer cde. That means they dn’t learn hw t think thrugh, express r defend ideas.
“Why hire a brainless bachelr’s degree hlder fr a jb that an AI tl can d at lwer csts and with n cmplaint?” Andy Jassy asked by the end f the letter.
      32. What is the authr’s real cncern?
      A. Human beings will be replaced by AI.B. Big cmpanies are t eager t adpt AI.
      C. New jbs can’t be created fast enugh.D. We are lsing ur ability t think prperly.
      33. What did the researchers find in their study?
      A. AI tls were wisely used by students.
      B. Students culd benefit mre frm typing.
      C. Handwriting was a superir learning strategy.
      D. The brain had t be challenged t stay healthy.
      34. What is the fifth paragraph mainly abut?
      A. The cnvenience f AI tls.B. The need t challenge ur brain.
      C. A functin f the neural netwrk.D. A way t memrize infrmatin.
      35. What des Andy Jassy imply in his letter?
      A. Amazn needs creative engineers.B. Amazn will cut its wrkers’ salary.
      C. Emplyees shuld nt cmplain.D. Bachelr’s degree hlders are preferred.
