Mst adults remember their first memries later r n earlier than preschl age. They agree that it is because babies dn’t have memries. Is it true? Prbably nt!
Studies n animals shw the hippcampus, a key brain area fr memry, can stre early memries and keep them int adulthd. Scientists even brught back frgtten muse memries by stimulating (刺激) hippcampus cells active during the early event.
But what abut humans? My lab spent ten hard years studying awake babies using functinal magnetic resnance imaging (fMRI) (功能性磁共振成像). This technlgy is difficult t use fr studying memry in babies. Why? Babies are always n the g, and have a shrt attentin time, making gd data (数据) hard t cllect. Mst baby fMRI studies happen during sleep. But we needed babies awake because memries frm frm real experiences. After ver 400 experiences, we fund ways t keep awake babies still and happy.
Recently, using this way, we fund the baby hippcampus can stre memries starting arund age ne. We shwed babies pictures during fMRI. Later, we tested their memry by shwing familiar pictures mixed with new nes. If a baby lked lnger at a familiar picture, we cnsidered it remembered.
Lking back at the brain scans when pictures were first shwn, the hippcampus was mre active fr the pictures that babies later remembered. This suggests the baby hippcampus can create memries quickly after an experience, especially after 12 mnths ld.
But many questins remain: Hw lng d these memries last? Hw cmplex is baby memry? What blcks access? Culd we ever recver these early memries? Answering these culd help us understand learning, brain develpment, and memry lss in aging and disease.
8. Why is baby fMRI research difficult accrding t the text?
A. Babies ften cry.B. Adults fail t talk with babies.

A. By listing daily examples.B. By telling a persnal stry.
C. By presenting research findings.D. By cmparing different cultures.
11. What is the best title fr the text?
A. When Memries Start t Disappear?
B. Hw Babies Frm Gd Memries?
C. Can Lst Babies’s Memries Be Fund?
D. D Babies Have Memries?

Yellwstne is a ppular turist attractin. T this day, under it lies ne f Earth’s mst active systems f earthquakes and vlcanic activity.
Prfessr Bing Li and his cwrkers used machine learning (ML) t re-examine histrical earthquake data frm the Yellwstne caldera (火山口) ver a 15-year perid. The team revisited ld data and fund abut 10 times mre earthquake events than thse that had been recrded befre.
A key finding in the study is that mre than half f the earthquakes recrded in Yellwstne were part f earthquake grups. These grups differ frm aftershcks, which are smaller earthquakes that fllw larger main shcks in the same general area.
“While Yellwstne and ther vlcanes each have unique features, the hpe is that these findings can be applied elsewhere,” said Li. “By understanding patterns f seismicity, like earthquake grups, we can imprve safety practices, better tell the public pssible dangers, and even guide gethermal (地热的) energy develpment away frm danger in areas with prmising heat flw.”
This increase in recgnized events prnunces a key advantage f ML ver traditinal methds; befre its applicatin, earthquakes were generally fund by trained experts wh manually reviewed data. This prcess tk time, was cstly, and ften fund fewer events than are nw pssible with ML. In recent years, ML. has caused a rush t cllect data, as scientists revisit amunts f histrical data stred in data centers acrss the wrld, uncvering mre abut unknwn seismic areas past and present.
“T a large extent, there is n systematic understanding f hw ne earthquake causes anther in a grup. We can nly indirectly measure the space and time between events,” said Li. “But nw, we have a far mre cmplete recrd f earthquake activity under the Yellwstne caldera. We can apply quantitative methds (量化法) t quantify and find new, early unseen grups, study them, and see what we can learn frm them.”
12. Hw did the team find mre earthquake events?
A. By using ML.B. By studying lnger.
C. By checking new data.D. By having mre experts.
13. What can we learn abut the findings?
A. They are useless.B. They stp public-dangers ttally.
C. They may help with energy develpment.D. They will attract mre turists.
14. What des the fifth paragraph fcus n?
A. Experts’ wrk.B. The benefits f ML.
C. The imprtance f data.D. Seismic features.
15. Hw des Prf. Li feel abut the recrd?
A. Dissatisfied.B. Wrried.C. Psitive.D. Uncertain.
