Many teenagers spend their free time hanging ut with friends r scrlling thrugh scial media, but Tiffany Gay, an 18-year-ld student at Orland Science Schls, spent hers develping a device that culd ptentially help millins f peple.
“Grwing up, I actually lived with my aunt wh had a visin prblem, and I watched as her eyesight declined ver time. And seeing that made me realize that there was a lack f technlgies ut there that were able t help thse with visual disabilities adapt t their circumstances,” said Gay.
Thrugh years f trial and errr, Tiffany develped a wearable device that uses LIDAR, a very cmmn type f sensr, t map an area and then uses vibratins (振动) t warn the wearer when there are bstacles and ther things in their path. As they get clser, the vibratins get strnger.
The technlgy n Tiffany’s visr appeals t mre than just the sense f tuch. She has the lights t indicate distance. As yu get clser, yu’ll see the light turn red. As yu get mderately far away, yu’ll see the light turn blue. And as yu get really far away, it shuld turn green. And the different lights symblize hw intense the vibratin may be.
Tiffany has been wrking n this prject fr the past three years. “A lt f crazy ideas, but in that time, I was able t create different mdels. I’ve been able t make it a lt mre efficient ver these past three years, and I’m als wrking n raising fund t get my patent.” said Gay.
Her inventin nw csts arund $200, which is quite reasnable fr medical assistance devices, but Tiffany wants t make it even mre accessible t peple. She said, “Decreasing the price is a significant change I want t make. But, what I really want is making it accessible t the cuntries where we have the highest percentage f peple wh are visually impaired.”

A. Her aunt’s visual declining.
B. Her parents’ encuragement.
C. Her wn interest in inventin.
D. Her sympathy fr elderly peple.

A free nline platfrm that allws speakers t practice in frnt f thusands f virtual audience has been released t help many peple deal with their anxiety when making a speech. Dr Chris Macdnald, wh created the nline platfrm, said the apprach was an attempt t reduce the lengthy waits r high csts peple ften face when seeking help.
The Virtual Reality Public Speaking platfrm is based n the idea that facing fears directly can help reduce them. It is cmbined with breathing exercises and eye mvements that help slw the heart rate and cntrl the fear respnse. Peple using the technlgy can practice speaking in varius virtual reality (VR) settings, frm an empty classrm r small audience f virtual figures wh feel bred and sleepy, t a stadium f 10,000 viewers, with the ptin t add distractins such as flashing cameras and lud nises.
A recent study suggests the platfrm culd be beneficial. The research invlved 29 vlunteers frm China, wh each finished a 30-minute sessin in which they switched between using the VR system and practicing a simple breathing exercise. After that, they delivered a prepared ne-minute speech in English t 34 peple in real life. The percentage f students wh said they were anxius public speakers fell frm 65% befre the experiment t 20% after the presentatins, while the percentage wh described themselves as cnfident rse frm 31% t 79%. Mre students said they enjyed public speaking after using the platfrm.
But Cella, a psychlgist and leader f the virtual reality lab at King’s Cllege Lndn, wh was nt invlved in the wrk, said there was a ptential risk that verdependence n the platfrm culd increase peple’s avidance f public speaking. “There is a lt f enthusiasm and prblem-slving energy frm digital innvatrs t address mental health challenges in ur sciety. But unfrtunately, many prducts like this platfrm have pr uptake (利用) and shrt lifespan due t the rapid develpment and limited evidence,” he said. “As with any emerging technlgy, it’s crucial t evaluate its real-wrld impact, hw peple use it, whether it truly imprves cnfidence and reduces anxiety, and what unintended effects might arise.”
8. Wh may find this platfrm useful?
A. A graduate preparing fr a jb interview.
B. A delivery driver taking a rad safety test.
C. A cach planning athletes’ training wrkuts.
D. A prgrammer giving instructins t a cmputer.
9. What’s the main purpse f Paragraph 2?
A. T ffer advice n using VR.B. T explain the reasn fr exercise.
C. T describe hw the platfrm wrks.D. T shw hw t vercme speech anxiety.
10. What can we learn frm the research?
A. The number f users rse dramatically.
B. The platfrm imprved users’ English ability.
C. The platfrm cntributed t users’ presentatin.
D. The users practiced breathing exercise every day.
11. What’s Cella’s attitude t the platfrm?
A. Cncerned.B. Objective.C. Unclear.D. Supprtive.

When visiting a dctr in the future, yu can expect t be accmpanied by a virtual versin f yurself. Updated with yur latest vital signs, it will help the dctr make an accurate diagnsis (诊断) and prvide persnalized treatments fr the patients.
N matter hw unreal this might seem, the researchers at Queen Mary University f Lndn (QMUL) already use cmputer simulatins (模拟) f the hearts f patients t test different treatments fr a heart disrder. It wuld be far t dangerus t experiment this way n smene’s real heart.
Digital twins are starting t be seen everywhere. They can nt nly mnitr the health f jet engines n airliners, but als help carmakers spend fewer years n the develpment f new mdels by simulating test drives and crashes. All this is being pwered by recent prgress in AI, which gives twins the ability t make predictins abut their physical cunterparts (对应的事物), and adjust themselves based n new infrmatin.
Digital twins make it easier fr humans t slve challenging prblems, allwing peple t have a lk int the future. Fr businesses, this shuld mean better designs and peratins. Fr sciety, the prmise is als fascinating: persnalized health care, and ways t prevent the earth frm envirnmental disasters.
Culd these virtual twins g ut f cntrl? They might if they are prgrammed badly, r hacked int. Digital twins will take in muntains f data, sme f it wrng and much f it raising cncerns abut privacy. Yet thse risks are a natural part f technlgical prgress. The appearance f the digital mirrr wrld will raise new questins, but its ptential benefits are already easy t see.
12. Which f the fllwing best describes a digital twin?
A. A virtual cpy.B. A vide game.C. A ty mdel.D. A medical database.
13. Why d researchers at QMUL use cmputer simulatins f hearts?
A. T reduce the time f the heart peratin.
B. T use real hearts much mre cnveniently.
C. T help increase the patients’ recvery rates.
D. T avid the danger f experimenting n real hearts.
14. Hw des AI cntribute t the develpment f digital twins?
A. It increases the efficiency f simulatins thrugh data analysis.
B. It creates accurate digital cpies fr medical and industrial use.
C. It enables digital twins t predict results and adapt n their wn.
D. It imprves virtual mdels by adding real-time mnitring features.
15. What is the authr’s verall attitude tward the develpment f digital twins?
A. Cautiusly ptimisticB. Strngly supprtive
C. Clearly criticalD. Deeply ambiguus
