A race is n in slar engineering t create almst impssibly-thin, flexible slar panels. Stanfrd University researchers annunced they have achieved recrd efficiencies in a prmising class f new materials, which can be thinner than a piece f paper.
Accrding t the study published in the jurnal Nature Cmmunicatins, it uses a new material called “transitin metal dichalcgenides”(TMDs). They absrb incredibly high vlumes f sunlight that reach their surface cmpared t ther slar materials.
“Imagine an autnmus drne that pwers itself with a slar panel atp its wing that is less than six micrmeters thick.” said Ksha Nassiri Nazif, c-lead authr f the study.
Slimming dwn is necessary because the king f slar materials, silicn, is much t heavy, large and rigid fr applicatins where flexibility, lightweight and high pwer are imprtant and excellent.
While TMDs hld great prmise, research experiments t date have struggled t change mre than 2% f the sunlight they absrb int electricity. But the scientists believe they culd practically reach 27% efficiency with electrical imprvements. That wuld be cmparable with tday’s tp slar panels, silicn included.
Nazif tld Frbes that the new materials are great candidates fr next-generatin electrnics and slar cells. Chipmakers like Intel and the Taiwan Semicnductr Manufacturing Cmpany are already cnsidering TMDs fr their future technlgy. They culd be used in a variety f mbile applicatins, including self-pwered wearable devices and sensrs, as well as giving a bst t lightweight airplanes and electric cars.
The ultra-thinness des cme with engineering challenges, primarily in mass prductin. When transferring such a layer f TMD t a flexible, supprting material, the TMD layer is frequently damaged.
But the team thinks it is pssible t vercme these challenges. Shuld they succeed, it culd change slar pwer as we knw it. “Silicn makes up 95 percent f the slar market tday.” Nazif tld Frbes. “This is why we aren’t seeing these applicatins fr slar cells tday; TMDs are ging t change the landscape. ”
8. What is the biggest advantage f TMDs nw?
A. They are cmparable t tp silicn panels.
B. They have the quality f remarkable thinness.
C. They can efficiently turn sunlight int energy.
D. They have excellent ability t reflect sunlight.
9. What des Nazif stress in paragraph 6?
A. The future prspects f TMDs.
B. The expectatin fr future tech.
C. The appeal f TMDs t chipmakers.
D. The wide applicatins f slar energy.
10. What can we expect f new slar panels in the future?
A. They culd pwer all mbile devices.
B. They will revlutinize the chip market.
C. They culd be a cmpetitive alternative.
D. They will be prduced n a large scale sn.
11. Which f the fllwing is the best title f this passage?
A. Silicn: Cmpetitive Materials fr Slar Market
B. TMDs: Lightweight Materials fr Future Slar Panels
C. Chipmakers: Obstacles t Slar Panels Cmmercializatin
D. Nature Cmmunicatins: Efficient Slar Panels Applicatin

Frm an airplane, cars mving slwly dwn the highway lk like ants. But actual ants — unlike cars — smehw manage t avid the suffering f stp-and-g traffic. Researchers are nw studying these insects’ cperative tactics (战术) t learn hw t prgram self-driving cars that dn’t jam up.
The free flw f traffic becmes unstable as the number f cars increases n a highway. At 15 vehicles per mile per lane, ne driver tapping their brakes (刹车) can cause a persistent wave f cngestin. “It’s a kind f phase transitin,” like water turning frm a liquid t a slid frm, says Nishinari, a physicist at the University f Tky.
Nishinari’s previus research had shwn that ants can maintain their flw even in large numbers. S what’s their secret? In a recent study, researchers recrded ants n trails and used traffic-engineering mdels t analyze their mvement. They fund that the ants dn’t jam because they travel in grups f three t 20 that mve at nearly cnstant rates while keeping gd distances between ne anther-and they dn’t speed up t pass thers.
Human drivers at rush hur are hard t fllw such rules. “We’re maximizing the interests f individuals, which is why, at a given pint, yu start t have a traffic jam,” says Nicla, wh studies sustainable engineering at the University f Trent in Italy. “But self-driving cars, if they ne day becme everywhere, culd have mre cperative prgramming. In ne visin f this future, autnmus vehicles wuld share infrmatin with nearby cars t make gd use f traffic flw-perhaps, by priritizing cnstant speeds and headways r by nt passing thers n the rad,” Nicla suggests.
Tday’s drivers can learn at least ne thing frm ants t avid causing a traffic jam, Nishinari says: dn’t tailgate. By leaving rm between their car and the ne ahead f them, drivers can absrb a wave f braking in heavy traffic cnditins that wuld therwise be amplified (放大) int a traffic jam with n bvius cause. “Just keeping away,” he says, “can help traffic flw smthly.”
12. What is paragraph 2 mainly abut?
A. The principle f causing a jam.B. The bad effects f jams n ur life.
C. The difficulty f aviding a jam.D. The suffering f being stuck in a jam.
13. What is the ants’ key t aviding traffic jams?
A. Traveling in large grups.B. Keeping steady speed and spacing.
C. Fllwing a central leader.D. Frequently walk ver ne anther.
14. What des Nicla suggest in Paragraph 4?
A. Prvide mre speed chices fr drivers.
B. Build special rads fr self-driving cars.
C. Set stricter rules t regulate drivers’ behavirs.
D. Apply ants’ cperative strategies t self-driving cars.
15. What des the underlined wrd “tailgate” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Park illegally.B. Speed up suddenly.
C. Drive t clsely.D. Ignre traffic signals.

My senir year f high schl was an extremely busy ne, t say the least. If I wasn't studying and wrrying abut my grades, I was taking part in multiple extracurricular activities r attempting t make preparatins fr cllege.
Finally, as my senir year began t wind dwn, I gt a part-time jb at the lcal cafe. I had figured that the jb wuld be easy and, fr the mst part, stress-free. I pictured myself puring excellent cffee, making delicius cakes and becming clse friends with the regular custmers.
What I hadn't cunted n were the peple with great rders wh chse t use the drive-thrugh windw, r the wmen wh felt that the cffee was much t creamy, r the men wh wanted their iced cffee remade again and again until it reached a certain level f perfectin. There were mments when I was annyed with the human race as a whle, simply because I culdn't seem t please anyne. Nevertheless, I kept at it.
One miserable rainy day, I spent my afternn handing peple their rders and waiting as they slwly cunted their pennies. I tried t smile as the custmers cmplained abut the rain, but it was difficult t smile as they sat in their temperature-cntrlled cars with the windws rlled up. While I dealt with huge drplets f water hanging frm my visr(帽舌). On tp f that, n ne was tipping. Every time I lked int my nearly empty tip jar, grew mre depressed.
Arund fur 'clck, ne f my regular custmers named Hank came in lking depressed and defeated. My cwrker and I asked what the prblem was and if we culd help, but he wuldn't reveal any details.
