Walking int Dryden Theater, I felt as if I had stepped int a time machine—the traditinal, ld-timey bx ffice, tns f ld-style mvie psters n the walls. As everyne tk their seats, an lder gentleman wh lked like he walked straight ut f the 1920s spke t all f the attendees.
Nrmally, Philip Carli is the pianist playing the live accmpaniment fr the films. Hwever, The Barker has music synchrnized (同步) with the film, s he was tasked with giving the audience a histrical backgrund f the film. Carli’s wide breadth f knwledge abut the backgrund f the film made it feel as if I was transprted t the time and place f The Barker befre the start f the film.
Earlier, films were played with live accmpaniment, cntained intertitles t add cntext, and sme added sund bites. With the inventin f synchrnized sund, films slwly added talking dialgue in scenes ccasinally. The Barker, released in 1928, is cnsidered a “part-talkie”.
The film, which explres the lives f wrkers, is the first appearance f all f the main cast in a talking rle. It was revlutinary fr the technlgy but als fr the actrs. My film experience cnsists f mstly talkies (有声电影), s watching The Barker, I felt like I witnessed smething brand new.
The experience was unlike any mvie-ging experience I have ever had. Since viewing films has gradually been reduced t streaming services, especially since the pandemic, this has increased the accessibility f film but we are stripped f a scial experience t watch a mvie — ne that attending The Barker reminded me f. This allwed us t return t the mvie-ging adventure. Finally, everyne wanted big screens and surrund sund rather than the tiny screens in bedrms. Mre imprtantly, we were all able t interact with a piece f cntent alngside ther peple.
The experience brught back the pastime f ging t the cinema — ne that I think we shuld cntinue t enjy. I say we take a page ut f the 1920s playbk and return back t the cinema.
      24. Wh is Philip Carli?
      A. A famus pianist in the film.B. A persn intrducing the music.

Facing intense cmpetitin fr fds, sea tters (海獭) survive with the help f tls — like rcks and even glass bttles — that let them break pen tugher prey (猎物) that they wuldn’t therwise be able t eat.
That’s accrding t a new study f sea tters in Mnterey Bay, Califrnia, which tk a lk at the tl use f individual tters. The findings reveal hw this may increase their chances f survival in an uncertain wrld. Sea tters spend their days lking arund fr fd in kelp (海草) frests. They dive t the bttm t grab tasty fd, plus smetimes rcks that they plan t use as tls. They bring these t the surface and flat n their backs as they get t wrk n pening and eating their snacks. “Their preferred fd is urchins (海胆),” says bilgist Chris Law, wh ntes that urchins are relatively easy fr tters t break apart. But there are areas ver-abundance f urchins, where urchins have eaten all the kelp. Since the kelp is gne, hwever, these urchins n lnger have a gd fd supply and prvide little nutritinal value fr tters. That’s a matter f life-and-death t tters, s they aren’t interested in cnsuming them.
“S that means tters have t eat alternative fds,” says Law. “Many f them are thse super hard prey items that really require sme kind f external frce t break int.” Law and sme c-wrkers analyzed data n 196 tters in Califrnia. It turns ut that frequent tl users were able t eat harder and larger prey. This was particularly imprtant fr female tters, since they’re smaller than males and aren’t able t bite dwn with as much frce.
“They typically wuldn’t be able t break int harder prey” says Law. “But they use tls mre than males, s they’re able t gain access t these nvel surces f fd items.” Besides, using tls prtected the tters’ teeth. The researchers fund that tl users had less dental damage frm biting hard fd items.
      28. What can we infer abut kelp and urchins?
      A. Urchins survive kelp.B. Urchins destry kelp frests.
      C. Kelp and urchins cexist.D. Kelp restricts urchins’ grwth.
      29. Why are urchins abandned by sea tters?
A Urchins ffer little nutritin.B. Otters find nvel fd items.
      C. Urchins are hard t break apart.D. Otters are tired f eating urchins.
      30. What can we knw abut male tters?
      A. They prefer t cnsume sft fd.B. They make less use f tls fr fd.
      C. Their fd chain has been brken.D. Their teeth are easier t get damaged.
      31. Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the text?
      A. Sea Otters’ Favrite Fd: Urchins in Kelp Frests.
      B. The Relatinship Between Sea Otters’ Diet and Kelp Frests.
      C. Differences in Tl Use Between Male and Female Sea Otters.

T determine the type and severity f a cancer, scientists usually analyze thin slices f a tumr(肿瘤) under a micrscpe. But t tell hw the tumr is treated, scientists must perfrm genetic sequencing(排序) f the RNA islated frm the tumr, a prcess that can take weeks and csts thusands f dllars.
But nw, Stanfrd Medicine researchers have develped an artificial intelligence-pwered cmputatinal prgram that can predict the activity f thusands f genes within tumr cells. The tl was created using data frm mre than 7,000 diverse tumr samples. The team shwed that it culd be used rutinely t predict genetic variatins in breast cancers and t predict patient utcmes.
“This kind f sftware culd be used t quickly identify gene signatures in patients’ tumrs, speeding up clinical (临床的) decisin-making and saving the health care system thusands f dllars,” said Olivier Gevaert, PhD.
The researchers began with 7,584 cancer bipsies (活检) frm 16 different cancer types. Each bipsy had been sliced int thin sectins and prepared. After the researchers integrated their new cancer bipsies as well as ther datasets, including images frm thusands f healthy cells, the AI prgram-which they named SEQUOIA-was able t predict the expressin patterns f mre than 15,000 different genes frm the stained images.
T test the effect f SEQUOIA fr clinical decisin-making, Gevaert and his clleagues identified breast cancer genes that the mdel culd accurately predict the expressin f and that are already used in cmmercial breast cancer genmic tests.
The AI mdel can’t yet be used in a clinical setting, but Gevaert said his team is studying its ptential applicatins. In the future, he said, SEQUOIA culd reduce the need fr expensive gene expressin tests. “We’ve shwn hw useful this culd be fr breast cancer, and we can nw use it fr all cancers,” he said. “It’s a whle new surce f data that we didn’t have befre.”
      32. Hw d scientists usually find ut the treatment f a tumr?
      A. By analyzing its thin slices.
      B. By using a cmputatinal prgram.
      C. By perfrming genetic sequencing.
      D. By referring t rutinely cllected data.
      33. What can we knw abut SEQUOIA frm the passage?
      A. It has been widely used.
      B. It can predict all genes’ activity.
      C. It has reduced the cst f gene tests.
      D. It’s likely t lessen the requirement fr cstly genetic tests.
      34. What did Gevaert think f the future f the AI mdel?
      A. Ptential.B. Useless.C. Changeable.D. Ambiguus.
      35. What is the main idea f the passage?
      A. A new tl fr analyzing tumr slices.
      B. An AI tl t predict tumr gene activity.
      C. An attempt t perfrm riginal genetic sequencing.
      D. AI technlgy t revlutinize the treatment f cancer.

“Yur car is all set, ma’am,” the mechanic called ut t the wman. She thanked him with a gracius smile and turned t me. As she was abut t walk away, she paused, as if in deep thught. “I need t tell yu smething,” she said, her tne serius. “My daughter passed away a cuple f years ag. Even nw, small things can set me ff. But every s ften, I meet smene wh reminds me f her, and tday, yu did. I believe that maybe it’s a sign, that she’s still with me in sme way. Talking t yu has been a real pleasure.” She smiled, her eyes glistening. “When yu get hme, give yur parents a big hug. They’re lucky t have yu.”
