When Hamisi was a little by, he enjyed seeing his father, a fisherman, cme hme with fish every day frm wrk. By the time he was 10 years ld, Hamisi said he wanted t learn hw t fish. His early interactin with the cean made him lve everything abut it, and s did his lve fr prtecting the envirnment.
Nw Hamisi is a turtle (海龟) plice fficer and a member f the Tiwi Turtle Plice, a grup that started in 2020. “Turtles lve laying their eggs alng the beach here in Tiwi, Kwale Cunty, but they have faced many challenges ver the past years, including being plluted and pached (偷猎), and we want t prtect them, starting with their eggs,” said Hamisi.
“I als prtect the fish, but turtles are an endangered species that I’m anxius abut. Imagine a mther giving birth t a child and then lsing it, and she des it again and it is killed, and then finally the mther is killed. That’s sad, and I dn’t want turtles t g thrugh that,” said Hamisi.
Other than patrlling (巡逻) the beach, the turtle plice als check turtles by tracking (追踪) them. Hamisi explained that a turtle they had labeled recently was last fund in Mzambique, but they guessed it was either killed r in danger because they suddenly lst track f it. There are als many ther dangers that risk the lives f turtles. “Mst turtles either feed n plastic, mistaking it fr fd r are caught in nets that have been left in the cean,” said Hamisi.
Hamisi and his cmmunity have called n lcals t prvide prtectin fr turtles t ensure that their numbers are hlding steady. And they hpe actin will be taken t prevent plastic waste frm entering ceans.
