I was brn and raised in Minnesta, the USA, but as an adult I have mstly lived in Eurpe and Africa. I teach crss-cultural management at the Internatinal Business Schl near Paris. While traveling in Tky recently with a clleague, I gave a shrt talk t a grup f 20 managers. At the end, I asked whether there were any questins r cmments. N hands went up, s I went t sit dwn. My clleague whispered t me, “I think there actually were sme cmments, Erin. D yu mind if I fry?” I agreed, but I guessed it a waste f breath. He asked the grup again. “Any cmments r questins?”
Still, n ne raised a hand, but this time he lked very carefully at each persn in the silent audience. Gesturing t ne f them, he said, “D yu have smething t add?” T my amazement, she respnded “Yes, thank yu.” and asked me a very interesting questin. My clleague repeated this several times, lking directly at the audience and asking fr mre questins r cmments.
After the sessin, I asked my clleague, “Hw d yu knw that thse peple had questins?” He hesitated, nt sure hw t explain it, and then said, “it has t d with hw bright their eyes are.”
He cntinued “In Japan, we dn’t make as much direct eye cntact as yu d in the West. S when yu asked if there were any cmments, mst peple were nt lking directly at yu. But a few peple in the grup were lking right at yu, and their eyes were bright. That indicates that they wuld be happy t have yu call n them.”
I thught t myself I wuld never have learned frm my upbringing in Minnesta. Since then, I try t fcus n understanding behavir in ther cultures I encunter, and keep finding the bright eyes in the rm.

Symblic cmmunicatin in the frm f language underlies ur unique ability t reasn — r the cnventinal wisdm hlds s. A new study published in Science, thugh, suggests ur capacity t reasn lgically may nt actually depend n language, at least nt fully. The findings shw babies still t yung t speak can reasn and make reasnable deductins.
The authrs — a team frm several Eurpean institutins — studied infants (婴儿) aged 12 and 19 mnths, when language learning and speech prductin has just begun but befre cmplex mastery has been achieved. The children had t inspect distinct bjects repeatedly — such as a dinsaur and a flwer. The items were initially hidden behind a black wall. In ne set f experiments the animatin (动漫) wuld shw a cup scping up (舀出) the dinsaur. Half f the time, the barrier wuld then be remved t reveal, as expected, the remaining flwer. In the rest f the instances, thugh, the wall wuld disappear and a secnd dinsaur wuld be there.
The children deduced in these latter ccurrences that smething was nt quite right, even thugh they were unable t express in wrds what was wrng. Eye-tracking — a cmmnly used technique t judge mental abilities in preverbal (语前的) children and apes — shwed infants stared significantly lnger at scenes where the unexpected bject appeared behind the barrier, suggesting they were cnfused by the reveal. “Our results indicate that the acquisitin f lgical vcabulary might nt be the surce f the mst fundamental lgical building blcks in the mind,” says lead study authr Nicl Cesana-Arltti. A majr cmpnent f human lgic, he ntes, relates t thinking abut alternative pssibilities and eliminating incnsistent nes: Des the dinsaur sit behind the barrier r des the flwer? In a frmal lgic this is called a disjunctive syllgism (析取三段论): A r B; if nt A, therefre B.
Cesana-Arltti acknwledges his findings d nt deny the imprtance f language and symblic cmmunicatin t human brain develpment, and t ur evlutinary backstry. Yet the new research suggests that perhaps it is nt entirely necessary t shape the brain’s lgical reasning capacities. He plans further wrk studying hw lgic befre the develpment f language might still differ frm reasning abilities that appear nce language cmes alng, as language may pen additinal reasning abilities unavailable t the speechless brain.
“T ur knwledge, nbdy has ever directly dcumented lgical reasning in 12-mnth-ld infants befre.” he adds.
8. We can learn frm the new study published in Science that _____.
A. the ability t reasn lgically is unique t humans
B. babies are t yung t make reasnable deductins
C. language is nt a requirement fr sme basic reasning
D. the new findings crrespnd with the cnventinal ideas
9. The researchers draw the cnclusin frm the fact that _____.
A the infants were aware f illgical utcmes
B. the infants inspected distinct bjects ver and again
C. the infants were very sensitive t the remval f the barrier
D. the infants shwed interest in the appearance f the dinsaur
10. The underlined wrd “eliminating” in Paragraph 3 prbably means “_____”.

It's rare that yu see the wrds "shyness" and "leader" in the same sentence. After all, the cmmn viewpint is that thse utging and sciable guys make great public speakers and excellent net-wrkers and that thse shy peple are nt. A survey cnducted by USA Tday referred t 65 percent f executives wh believed shyness t be a barrier t leadership. Interestingly, the same article stresses that rughly 40 percent f leaders actually are quite shy—they're just better at adapting themselves t situatinal demands. Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and Charles Schwab are just a few "innies".
Unlike their utging cunterparts wh are mre sensitive t rewards and risk-taking, shy peple take a cautius apprach t chance. Rather than the flashy chit-chat that defines scial gathering, shy peple listen attentively t what thers say and absrb it befre they speak. They're nt thinking abut what t say while the ther persn is still talking, but rather listening s they can learn what t say. Alng the same lines, shy peple share a cmmn lve f learning. They are intrinsically(内在地) mtivated and therefre seek cntent regardless f achieving an utside standard.
Being shy can als bring ther benefits. Remember being in schl and hearing the same kids cntribute, until shy little Jhnny, wh almst never said a wrd, cut in? Then what happened? Everyne turned arund t lk with great respect at little Jhnny actually talking. This is hw shy peple made gd use f their pwer f presence: they "wn" the mment by speaking calmly and purpsefully, which translate t a psitive image.
Shyness is ften related t mdesty. Nt t say that limelight-seekers aren't mdest, but shy peple tend t have an accurate sense f their abilities and achievements. As a result, they are able t acknwledge mistakes, imperfectins, knwledge gaps and limitatins.
Since shy peple have a lwer sensitivity t utside rewards than utging nes, they're mre cmfrtable wrking with little infrmatin and sticking t their inner desires. Shy peple are als mre likely t insist n finding slutins that aren't primarily apparent. Dn't believe me? Maybe yu'll believe Albert Einstein, wh nce said, "It's nt that I'm s smart, it's that I stay with prblems lnger." Obviusly, finding certainty where uncertainty is typically ppular is a huge plus fr any successful persn.
The myth that shy peple are less effective leaders than their utging fellws is just a misunderstanding. Make wise use f yur persnality strengths t lead yur business n matter what side f the range yu fall n.
12. We can learn frm Paragraph 2 that ___________.
A. shy peple are sensitive t rewards
B. shy peple care mre abut cntent
C. utging peple are mre careful abut chances
D. utging peple cnsider what t learn while listening
13. The example f Jhnny shws ____________.
A. shy peple are likely t be mdest
B. hardwrking students speak little in public
C. sme students keep silent n purpse at schl
D. shy peple may have an advantage in discussin
14. We can learn frm the underlined sentence in Paragraph 5 that ____________.
A. success results frm devtinB. shyness cntributes t ppularity
C. utside reward leads t insistenceD. uncertainty cunts mre than certainty
15. The authr supprts his ideas mainly by ____________.
A. giving definitins and presenting research results
B. explaining prblems and prviding slutins
C. quting authrities and making evaluatins
D. making cntrasts and giving examples
