Sfie Rux, 26, was n a wrk trip t Malawi with her physician parents in 2019 when she befriended a girl named Faith. Their relatin was clse ver their lve f art and their future dreams: Rux wanted t be an architect, while Faith hped t be an animatr (动画设计师). But Faith’s schl had n electricity — let alne the technlgy t teach cmputer animatin.
Rux, wh grew up spending her summers in Africa, had raised funds fr cmputers t make STEAM — science, technlgy, engineering, arts, and math — educatin in Africa mre accessible. The lack f electricity at Faith’s schl shwed anther difficulty. At 16, Rux fund herself in her backyard designing and building a cmputer lab inside a recycled shipping cntainer. She named the creatin a BlmBx (绽放盒子). Rux filled the lab with cmputing equipment, and then tpped it with a slar rf fr dependable pwer.
In the summer f 2021, Rux tk it t Faith’s high schl in Blantyre, Malawi. Once intrduced, the BlmBx caught the attentin f the Malawi Ministry f Educatin. “They want everyne t be very technlgically literate (通晓的) by 2063,” Rux says, “and that starts with making sure that yung peple have cntact with technlgy and creative maker spaces.” The ministry agreed t a plan t build 70 mre labs acrss the cuntry.
T enlarge, hwever, Rux and a team f 30 prfessinals needed t slve prblems f prductivity, safety, and transprtatin t faraway cmmunities. BlmBx Design Labs frmed in 2023 as a public benefit cmpany after mving all prductin t Malawi and Suth Africa t bring dwn csts, reduce transprt time, and hire lcal wrkers.
Tday, Rux’s friend Faith studies art and design at the University f Malawi. When Rux finishes the 70 planned labs, they will reach 200,000 students s that their lve f learning can blm.

Hw d yu beat the summer heat? If yu’re like mst peple, yu turn the air cnditining n when it’s the httest time f the day. But what if yu culd use nnpeak (非高峰的) electrical hurs and stre the cld t use the next day? This idea has becme a reality fr a New Yrk City high-rise that’s being cled by ice.
Eleven Madisn, a skyscraper in the heart f Manhattan, is using cl, frzen ice vernight t cl the building, reprted CBS News. Fur stries belw grund, an ice battery system freezes water during the night, when electrical use is lw, and uses this ice t cl the building during the day. “There’s abut 500,000 punds f ice created every night,” said Hlly Paeper, president f Trane Technlgies, a cmpany that did the installatin (装置).
Air cnditining uses nearly 20% f energy use in hmes and businesses glbally. Hwever, n extremely ht days, that number can jump t 70%. Installatins like the ne in Eleven Madisn help t lwer that. Accrding t Paeper, the cmpany has installed the technlgy in abut 4,000 sites wrldwide.
The system in the basement f Eleven Madisn uses 100 tanks that are each the size f a parking spt. Because there’s a lt f energy cnsumed in freezing water, a mre effective way had t be fund. “We take water, and add sme ther elements in it,” explained Dr. Patrick Shamberger, an assciate prfessr at Texas A&M. “S we can take cntrl f that temperature basically anywhere we want it, in the zer t 20℃ range.”
While ice batteries aren’t being used t cl fd r t pwer electrical devices, they’re being used t cl buildings. Fr nw, cmbining ice batteries with ther types f energy strage frm renewables can help the pwer grid (电网) t keep up in ht weather as well as lwer the cst f electricity. It’s a win-win fr all.

B. It takes up less space than traditinal cling systems.
C. It uses less energy by using electricity during nnpeak hurs.
D. It cls buildings faster than traditinal air cnditiners.
29. Why are ther elements added t water in the ice battery system?
A. T let the system cl fd t.
B. T enable the system t adapt t different temperature cntrl needs.
C. T fix the prblem f high energy use when freezing water.
D. T make the ice last lnger and nt melt easily during the day.
30. What can we infer abut the future develpment f ice battery technlgy?
A. It will fcus n helping pwer electrical devices later.
B. It will use fewer tanks t save space in tall buildings,
C. It will sn replace all traditinal air cnditiners wrldwide.
D. It may wrk with mre renewable energy strage methds t be mre useful.
31. Which f the fllwing can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. NYC High-Rise Cls with Ice Battery System
B. Renewable Energy fr Building Cling
C. Trane Technlgies’ Glbal Cling Prjects
D. Traditinal Air Cnditining’s High Energy Use

There’s a cntinuing debate ver whether electric vehicles shuld prduce sunds t let the blind and ther pedestrians (行人) knw they’re n the rad. Sme think thse sunds shuld be standardized — like the “beep” sund f heavy machinery backing up, indicating “smething heavy is cming this way” when hearing it — while thers think any sund will d.
This is a serius subject. Plug-in hybrid cars (电混动力汽车) and battery electric vehicles are super-quiet, and a study at the University f Califrnia, Riverside, pinted ut that peple listening t recrdings n headphnes can hear a regular gas car cming frm 28 feet away but a hybrid in battery mde nly when it’s 7 feet away.
In respnse, the Eurpean Unin has carried ut new rules; all new electric vehicle mdels must have a sund-prducing device, which sunds like a traditinal car engine. Starting in 2021, all new electric vehicles f any mdel will need the Acustic Vehicle Alerting System r AVAS (车辆声学警报系统). That sund will cme int play when the car is traveling backwards r when it’s traveling at less than 12 miles an hur-speeds at which cars are mre likely t be mixing with pedestrians.
That’s a nice start, say representatives fr the blind, but mre is needed. “We’re calling n the gvernment t take this annuncement further by requiring AVAS n all existing electric and hybrid vehicles and ensuring drivers have them switched n,” Jhn Welshman, guide dg wner and a staff member f Guide Dgs, said in a statement.
Drivers in mst cases have the ability t shut ff the device when needed. My guess is that they will eventually be standardized s yur mind will autmatically register “electric car” when yu hear it. And that’s prbably a gd thing t reduce the chas n the rads.
32. What is the main safety issue discussed regarding electric vehicles?
A. Their high speed capabilities.
B. Their lack f engine nise.
C. Their small size.
D. Their bright headlights.
33. Hw far away can peple usually detect a hybrid vehicle in battery mde?
A. 28 feet.B. 12 feet.
C. 7 feet.D. 3 feet.
34. Which ne can replace the underlined part “cme int play” in paragraph 3?
A. Take effect.B. Slw dwn.
C. Break dwn.D. Stay silent.
35. What des the authr predict will happen with AVAS sunds in the future?
A. They will be remved entirely.
B. They will vary by manufacturer.
C. They will becme musical meldies.
D. They will be standardized and recgnizable.
