By furth grade, I std taller than my classmates — and even my teacher, Miss Listn. Unfrtunately, my
height far utpaced bth my crdinatin (协调性) and academic skills. I became the class clwn, struggling with
arithmetic, spelling, and reading. Recess (课间休息) was wrse: while peers raced thrugh games and sprts, I
stumbled ver my wn feet — Clumsy was my middle name.
Each afternn, Miss Listn cncluded the day by reading t the class fr fifteen minutes. I’d sigh with relief
at the end f anther embarrassing day, lsing myself in her vice and the stry, usually a chapter frm a nvel. If I
culd read with ease I culd find my way t happier places and times. Miss Listn apparently nticed my absrbed
attentin. I dn’t remember hw she tk me under her wing but by the time I mved n t fifth grade I was
reading at an eighth-grade level. My self-image, self-esteem, and life path were changed frever.
In my junir year f cllege, I drpped ut. I tk a jb as a newspaper reprter, nly t discver that while I
had a desire t be a jurnalist, I lacked bth the educatin and talent t succeed. Five years f struggling t craft a
single gd sentence were enugh — I quit writing. But I culdn’t survive n hunger r gd lks, s I trained as
      a registered nurse.
One evening, an ambulance delivered an elderly wman wh’d suffered a strke. As I apprached, the medical
assistant reprted: “Seventy-eight-year-ld Agnes Listn, fund at hme by neighbrs...” I recgnized Miss Listn’
s slackened face. I smiled sftly, “Hell, Miss Listn. It’s Tmmy Schwarz. D yu remember me?” She stared, her
      facial muscles twitching faintly.
I learned she’d utlived her family and friends; n ne visited during her hspitalizatin. Fr three days, I sat
      第 5页/共 13页
by her bedside, reading alud. She culdn’t cmmunicate, but her calm demeanr (举止) suggested cmfrt. I felt
privileged t give back in a direct and persnal way t smene wh had lved and helped me s much.
      24. What can be inferred abut the authr in furth grade?
      A. He had a sense f being ut f place. B. He didn’t get alng well with thers.

      C. It gave him a chance t repay her kindness. D. It allwed him t shwcase his nursing skills.

Experts have lng knwn that reading skills develp befre kindergarten, but new research frm the Harvard
Graduate Schl f Educatin suggests they may begin as early as infancy (幼儿期). The study, led by Nadine
Gaab, fund that develpmental trajectries (轨迹) between children with and withut reading disabilities start t
differ arund 18 mnths f age. It stresses the need fr early identificatin, early interventin, and imprved early
      literacy curses in preschls.
Gaab explained sme children enter kindergarten with a less-develped brain fr learning t read, and that
these differences appear in tddlerhd. “We’re currently waiting until secnd r third grade t find kids wh are
struggling readers,” she said. “We shuld intervene way earlier because we knw the yunger a brain is, the mre
plastic it is fr language input.”
Gaab and her c-authrs wrked with 130 participants, starting as early as 3 mnths ld. Fr ver a decade,
they used MRI scans t track brain develpment frm infancy t childhd and its relatin t literacy skills. Their
sample included children frm Bstn and Canada, cmbined with data frm the Calgary Preschl MRI Dataset.
While ther studies track brain develpment, this is the nly lngitudinal (纵向的) study that fllws brain
develpment frm infancy with cmprehensive literacy utcmes. “Thse ther studies had bigger sample sizes,
but they were mre fcused n typical maturatin,” said c-authr Ted Turesky. “We didn’t see ther studies that
      第 6页/共 13页
started in infancy, tracked brain maturatin in the same set f kids fr as lng, and included academic utcme
      measures.”
The findings suggest that children wh struggle with reading may begin schl already shwing brain
differences that affect literacy learning. Gaab emphasized that understanding when and hw these differences arise
culd help imprve early screening and supprt. She believes such basic research can infrm educatin plicy and
help mre children succeed in reading frm the start.
      28. What des the new study find abut reading disabilities?
      A. They emerge after kindergarten. B. They change a persn’s character.
      C. They are tugh t identify early. D. They appear much earlier than assumed.
      29. What des the underlined wrd “plastic” in paragraph 2 mean?
      A. Difficult t damage. B. Easily influenced r changed.
      C. Capable f remembering things quickly. D. Especially suitable fr acquiring new skills.
      30. What abut the study des paragraph 3 fcus n?
      A. Its scientific bases. B. Its technlgy limitatins.
      C. Its significance. D. Its prcess.
      31. What can be inferred frm Turesky’s wrds?
      A. Large sample sizes guarantee reliable findings.
      B. The findings may help shape curses in preschls.
      C. The lngitudinal research methd adpted is pineering.
      D. Typical maturatin shuld be invlved in fllwing studies.
      D
Histry is ne f thse subjects that culd be endless if we had enugh time. There has always been an
understanding that we learn histry t stp it frm being repeated, in a sense learning frm past mistakes.
Hwever, as we have discvered, this is nt entirely true. With the invasive (入侵 ) and vilent events still in
existence in many parts f the wrld, we can see that humanity has nt learnt frm its past. Histry shws itself t
repeat and it is imprtant t learn histry t see these chatic repetitins. Histry is nt just abut strife—wars,
revlutins, and struggles—but it is als a plitical and philsphical tpic.
A man named Peter Turchin has spent many years investigating hw we can use histry t ur wn benefit. In
2003 Turchin published his bk “histrical dynamics”. The bk demnstrates his wrkings in which he shws
the secular (世俗的) state f France and Russia frm their rigins t the 18th century. Nt lng after his bk was
      第 7页/共 13页
published Turchin funded clidynamics. Clidynamics wrks t shw the underlying patterns we can bserve in
histry and mdel them in a way t make scientific estimates f hw the future may play ut. His use f
mathematics has allwed scientists t develp a greater understanding f hw plitical settings may ccur r hw
      scieties will grw.
Of curse, it is simply impssible fr any histrian t predict the future, but by using this “big data” apprach,
Turchin has allwed individuals t lcate patterns and use critical thinking t help make judgments abut what the
future may hld. Turchin as well as many thers have used histry in an imprtant way t help future generatins.
As time passes, the databases will imprve, highlighting mre patterns and similarities, unavidably helping t
make these predictins mre reliable. Culd this apprach t using data be the future f histry and wuld we as a
sciety be able t shw the repetitins in humanity?
      32. What des the underlined wrd “strife” in paragraph 2 mean?
      A. reflectin. B. Cnclusin. C. Accunt. D. Cnflict.
      33. What can be inferred frm Turchin’s research?
      A. It intends t reveal state rigins. B. It jumps ut f histrical cycles.
      C. It cnfirms histry’s mirrr values. D. It shws maths histry similarities.
      34. Hw des Turhin’s apprach benefit histrians?
      A. By prviding first-hand data. B. By helping predict future trends.
      C. By ensuring precise future predictins. D. By fueling insights int certain events.
      35. What is the authr’s attitude tward predicting the future?
      A. Favrable. B. Objective. C. Uncncerned. D. Oppsed.
