Students wh are better able t understand and manage their emtins effectively, a skill knwn as emtinal intelligence (EI), d better at schl than their less-skilled classmates, accrding t research published by the American Psychlgical Assciatin.
“It’s nt enugh t be smart and hardwrking. Students must als be able t understand and manage their emtins t succeed at schl,” said Carlyn MacCann, lead authr f the study. MacCann and her clleagues analyzed data frm mre than 160 studies, representing mre than 42,000 students frm 27 cuntries, published between 1998 and 2019. The students ranged in age frm primary schl t cllege. The researchers fund that students with higher EI tended t get higher grades and better achievement test scres than thse with lwer EI scres. This finding held true even when cntrlling fr intelligence and persnality factrs. What was mst surprising t the researchers was the assciatin held despite different ages.
As fr why EI can affect academic perfrmance, MacCann believes a number f factrs may cme int play. “Students with higher EI may be better able t manage negative emtins, such as anxiety, bredm and disappintment, which can negatively affect academic perfrmance,” she said. “Als, these students may be better able t manage the scial wrld arund them, frming better relatinships with teachers, classmates and family, all f which are imprtant t academic success.” Finally, the skills required fr EI, such as understanding human mtivatin and emtin, may verlap with (与……重叠) the skills required t master certain subjects, such as histry and language, giving students an advantage in thse subject areas, accrding t MacCann.
Hwever, MacCann cautins against widespread testing f students t identify and target thse with lw EI as it may stigmatize (给……打上烙印) thse students. Instead, she recmmends interventins that invlve the whle schl, including additinal teacher training and a fcus n teacher well-being and emtinal skills. “Prgrams that integrate emtinal skill develpment int the existing curriculum wuld be beneficial, as research suggests that training wrks better when run by teachers rather than external specialists,” she said. “Increasing skills fr everyne — nt just thse with lw EI — wuld benefit everyne.”
      39. What surprised the researchers mst during MacCann’s study?
      A. Intelligence mattered mre than EI fr academic success.
      B. EI had an effect n learning fr students f all ages.
      C. Cllege students benefited mre frm EI than pupils.
      D. Persnality affected academic perfrmance greatly.
      40. What des MacCann suggest in the last paragraph?
      A. Equipping teachers with emtinal skills.
      B. Designing tests t identify students with lw EI.
      C. Develping special prgrams fr students with lw EI.
      D. Emplying emtinal specialists t give training t students.
      41. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. Shuld EI be taught in schl?
      B. Hw can students develp high EI?
      C. Students with high EI d better in schl
      D. Gd students d better in managing emtins
      C
D yu ever hear a friend speak n a tpic with the belief that “everyne” thinks the same way? D yu ften find yurself surrunded in a scial media feed that is cmpletely tailred (订做的) t yu and yur beliefs, reading alng withut the immediate realizatin?
A scial media ech chamber (社交媒体回音室) is when ne experiences a tailred media infrmatin that leaves ut ppsing viewpints and differing vices. Scial media sites like Facebk, Twitter, and YuTube cnnect grups f like-minded users tgether based n shared cntent preferences. As a result, peple see and take in infrmatin accrding t ur preexisting beliefs and pinins. Scial media cmpanies therefre rely n algrithms (算法) t assess ur interests and fld us with infrmatin that will keep ur attentin. The algrithms fcus n what we “like”, and “share” t keep feeding cntent that makes us cmfrtable.
In rder t truly get access t all infrmatin and t evaluate ur media, we must give urselves the pprtunity t step ut f ur cmfrt zne. While this becmes increasingly challenging, there are things we can d. The first step is t beef up yur media surces. Adding in a few media surces with different pinins will allw yu t at least understand what peple are saying utside f yur ech chamber. Next, read each thing yu see with a critical eye. Make sure that each thing yu accept as truth is truly fact. Lastly, attempt t search ut reliable new surces that are knwn fr trying their best t leave ut false infrmatin.
By accepting that ur media buffet (自助餐) n scial media is a prduct f ur present beliefs and pinins, we can wrk t make sure we are nt simply stuck in a scial media ech chamber.
      42. What is a result f the scial media ech chamber?
      A. Peple keep reading fr mre differing viewpints.
      B. Peple cntact like-minded nline users effectively.
      C. Peple rely n algrithms t evaluate their interests.
      D. Peple nly get infrmatin cnfirming their beliefs.
      43. What des the phrase “beef up” underlined in paragraph 3 mean?
      A. Track.B. Identify.
      C. Imprve.D. Prvide.
      44. Which f the fllwing can help us get ut f the ech chamber?
      A. Expsing urselves t ppsing vices.
      B. Criticizing all the things n scial media.
      C. Accepting ur present beliefs and pinins.
      D. Researching primary surces f infrmatin.
      45. What is the purpse f the text?
      A. T call n peple t use algrithms frequently.
      B. T ask peple nt t take in infrmatin blindly.
      C. T prmte the use f varius scial media sites.
      D. T infrm peple f new technlgy develpments.
      D
A team f researchers at ETH Zurich has the perfect lng-lasting slutin t ur fg prblem. They have develped a very thin and gld-based transparent cating (涂层) that can cnvert sunlight int heat, which can be applied t glass and ther surfaces t prevent them frm fgging.
The special cating is develped using titanium xide and gld particles. It selectively absrbs infrared radiatins (红外线照射) frm the sunlight and creates a heating effect that is pwerful enugh t keep fg away frm the surface f an bject. The cating basically emplys heat t stp fgging. The cating absrbs a large part f the infrared radiatin, which causes it t heat up-by up t 8℃.
Previusly, prducts like anti-fgging sprays create a very thin film f water n the surface t remve fg. The prblem with such surfaces is pllutin. Alng with water, the sprays als attract dirt, dust, il, and varius ther dirty substances, and just a little dirt n the surface makes it useless. Hwever, the new cating repels (排斥) water. Furthermre, the cating is significantly thinner, which makes it mre transparent as well as flexible. It is heated passively and requires, during daytime, n additinal energy surce.
Gld might be expensive, but the researchers stress that their cating requires s little that the material csts remain lw. Their cating is prduced with standardized and readily scalable methds, all cst-effectively. Hwever, althugh this prduct can wrk at very lw levels f slar irradiatin, it des rely n a certain amunt f light.
The researchers will develp the cating further fr ther applicatins. In the prcess, they will examine whether ther metals wrk just as well as gld. There is n need t fear. Hwever, this wuld cause a car r a building t heat up mre in the summer. The researchers have already filed a patent. Hpefully, this grundbreaking prduct will sn be available n the market.
      46. Hw des the new cating wrk t remve fg?
      A. By reflecting part f sunlight selectively.
      B. By keeping cl air away frm the bject.
      C. By creating a thin film f water n the surface.
      D. By absrbing infrared radiatins t heat the cating.
      47. Why des the authr mentin previus anti-fgging prducts?
      A. T stress the advantages f the new cating.
      B. T intrduce the inspiratin behind the new cating.
      C. T prve the difficulty f creating anti-fgging prducts.
      D. T explain the reasn fr the anti-fgging cating being ppular.
      48. What is the limitatin f the new cating?
      A. It is cnsiderably expensive.
      B. It depends n sunlight t wrk.
      C. It takes t much time t prduce.
      D. It is difficult t clean and maintain.
      49. What d the researchers plan t d next?
      A. Apply fr a patent fr the inventin.
      B. Develp the prduct fr mre practical uses.
      C. Explre the envirnmental impact f the cating.
      D. Seek a cheaper material as an alternative t gld.
