Saltwater recreatinal fishing is part f Flrida’s turist ecnmy. Anglers (垂钓者) take 40 millin saltwater fishing trips each year in Flrida in hpes f hking a snapper and hgfish. But strict fishing regulatins mean that mst f the caught fish are safely returned t the water.
On Biscayne Bay, Captain Wayne Cnn’s 75-ft bat carried twenty anglers. It was nt lng befre ne fisherman made a catch. It was a muttn snapper, but it was just 17 inches lng. It had t g back in the water. But it culdn’t be just thrwn back in.
Marine fisheries specialist Angela Cllins said, “When reef fish living in deep water are brught t the surface, the gases in their bdies expand, smetimes greatly. They can experience a cnditin knwn as bartrauma. That’s when yu see the fish’s eyes bulging (鼓胀) ut f its head r its stmach ppping ut f its muth. That gas expands and has t g smewhere, maybe detrimental t the fish.”
Anglers must have special equipment n bard t ensure reef fish survive nce they’re returned t the water. That includes lng needles t pierce the fish’s swim bladder in its bdy, releasing the pressure. But it’s als imprtant t get the fish back dwn t its habitat n the bttm, 100 feet r mre belw the surface. Cllins attached a weight t the fish’s lwer lip befre lwering it slwly back int the water. “This just shts him dwn fast,” she said. “It’s clsed until this gets t 100 feet. It pps pen, letting the fish swim ff.”
The ship mved t a different spt in deeper water and smene sn gt a hit. Cllins gave a shut. “Check it ut, that fish is special,” he said. It was a 7-r 8-pund muttn snapper. That was a great eating fish. But Lauren Hayes frm the University f Miami decided t release it. “I lve animals. Fishing is what it is, and the mments waiting fr a fish t bite feel mre real than having it in the net,” she said.
8. Why was the 17-inch-lng fish thrwn back?
A. It was a special fish.B. It was under the limit.
C. Its bdy expanded greatly.D. Its cnditin was terrible.
9. What des the underlined wrd “detrimental” in paragraph 3 mean?

A. Prtecting the fish’s habitat.B. Making reef fish living well.
C. Mnitring the fish’s ppulatin.D. Ensuring the released fish’s safety.

Nrthwestern University chemists have develped a nvel methd t break dwn plastic waste by using misture (水分) frm air, ffering a sustainable slutin t the glbal plastic crisis.
This nn-txic and slvent-free prcess starts with an inexpensive catalyst (催化剂) that breaks the chemical bnds in plyethylene terephthalate (PET) — the mst cmmn plastic in the plyester family, widely used in fd packaging and drinking bttles. After the bnds are brken, researchers simply expse the brken plastic t surrunding air; the misture in the air then cnverts these pieces int mnmers (单体), the essential building blcks f plastics. These mnmers can be recycled int new PET prducts r even transfrmed int mre valuable materials, paving the way fr a circular plastic ecnmy.
Published in the jurnal Green Chemistry, this technique is cleaner, cheaper, and mre sustainable than existing recycling methds. Naveen Malik, the study’s first authr. emphasized that their apprach addresses ne f the wrld’s mst pressing envirnmental challenges. Unlike traditinal recycling methds, this methd is bth envirnmentally friendly and highly practical fr real-wrld use.
PET plastics accunt fr 12% f glbal plastic usage and are a majr surce f pllutin due t their resistance t degradatin. They ften end up in landfills r break dwn int micrplastics that pllute waterways. Building n their previus wrk develping slvent-free catalytic prcesses, the team used inexpensive, abundant, and nn-txic mlybdenum (钼) catalyst and activated carbn. Heating PET with these materials breaks its chemical bnds; expsing the result t air then uses atmspheric misture t prduce terephthalic acid (TPA).
The prcess is fast and efficient: 94% f TPA is recvered in just fur hurs. The catalyst is durable and recyclable, maintaining effectiveness thrugh repeated use. Tests n real-wrld materials like plastic bttles, shirts, and mixed plastic waste cnfirmed its effectiveness, even breaking dwn clred plastics int pure, clrless TPA. As Malik nted, this innvatin is a practical step tward a bright prspect, shwing hw chemistry can align with nature t slve glbal challenges.
12. What des paragraph 2 mainly talk abut?
A. Hw the methd wrks.B. Why the methd is efficient.
C. Hw plastic waste is recycled.D. Why plastic needs develping.
13. What features des this methd have?
A. Widespread and practical.B. Inexpensive and ec-friendly.
C. Cmplex and uncntrllable.D. Energy-cnsuming and cstly.
14. What is the functin f paragraph 4?
A. T give similar examples.B. T explain mre reasns.
C. T intrduce detailed definitin.D. T prvide further clarificatin.
15. What can we knw abut the methd’s future?
A. It’s uncertain.B. It’s rdinary.C. It’s prmising.D. It’s challenging.
