Fur “Fun facts” that are cmplete lies, but yu believe them
N.1 Yu can see the Great Wall f China frm space
This seems right, desn’t it? The Great Wall f China is huge, after all, and yu can see large things frm far away. But even frm a lw rbit, it’s pretty much invisible (看不见的) t the naked eye, and nt exactly easy t pick ut with an advanced camera lens. Strangely, this myth (谬论) existed befre we even went int space, s it had the pprtunity t becme a “fact” befre it culd even be checked. There are many ther man-made bjects visible frm space, but because the Great Wall is made frm rcks gathered in the surrunding area, it desn’t stand ut against the landscape enugh t be visible. Hw Stuff Wrks helpfully suggests that China culd paint the wall in ht pink t fix the matter.
      N.2 Einstein failed at schl
Einstein, the mdern archetypal genius (天才), failing at schl is a “fact” which serves as an encuragement t under-perfrming schlchildren and is repeated by mtivatinal speakers wanting t make sme pint abut failure and success. It wuld be fairly cmfrting if true, but reality desn’t tend t care abut hw cmfrtable yu are. There are versins f this myth fcusing n maths, but in either case, it’s just nt true. The myth seems t result frm the fact that the grading system used in his schl was changed the year after he left—frm 1 being the highest mark t 6 being the highest. N.4 Sharks dn’t get cancer
This fact has gained acceptance despite having merely been invented as a reasn fr selling peple shark cartilage pills as a cancer cure. Firstly, even if it was true that sharks didn’t get cancer, that wuldn’t mean that using a part f it was a cure r treatment fr cancer. There were sme initial psitive results, but they were als gained with ther animal cartilages and didn’t translate int a reliable treatment. In shrt, eating shark cartilage pills des nthing fr cancer patients. And t pile mre stupidity n tp f it, sharks clearly d get cancer.

Amng the Americans, 36 percent f bullied kids had mental prblems later. Thse prblems included anxiety, which is a state f excessive wrry. They als included depressin. That is a feeling f hpelessness that can last a lng time. Amng kids wh had been maltreated by adults, 17 percent later suffered mental health prblems. That was less than half the rate seen in peple had been bullied as schl kids.
In the U.K. grup the difference was less dramatic. Rughly 25 percent f the bullied kids reprted mental health prblems later, cmpared with abut 17 percent wh had been maltreated. But hwever yu lk at it, the findings are disturbing. And that’s why Wlke says schls, health services and ther agencies must wrk tgether t end bullying.
Studies like this are imprtant, says Crinna Jenkins Tucker. They bring attentin t the lasting impacts f bullying. Tucker des, hwever, questin the value f cmparing bullying t ther types f abuse. Such an apprach can make it seem like ne type f bad experience is wrse than the ther, she says. In fact, bth types have shrt-term and lng-term effects n health. She’d like t see researchers study the big picture. They shuld try t understand hw all f these negative experiences tgether shape children—and smetimes harm them.
