Mnarch butterflies are amng the planet’s mst pwerful migratrs. Every autumn, a new generatin is brn in the nrthern United States and suthern Canada. Creating new frests n the higher muntains and utside the insects’ current gegraphic range culd be a slutin.
“Here, we shw the pssibility f planting new trees n a nearby vlcan,” Saenz-Rmer, a bilgist in Mexic said. “We call this ‘assisted migratin’: planting seedlings (幼苗) grwn frm seeds frm existing sacred fir ppulatins t new sites whse climate by 2060 will becme similar t that at tday’s verwintering sites because f glbal warming.”
The seedlings were planted at fur tested altitudes-11,154, 11,811, 12,467, and 13,123 feet. The last was included because it’s the highest altitude at which sacred fir trees can survive in tday’s climate.
Researchers fund that when seedlings were mved t lcatins higher and clder than the initial stand, their grwth and survival declined. At the highest altitude f 13,123 feet, the grwth was nearly zer and many seedlings shwed frst damage. Between 11,811 and 12,467 feet, the seedlings had 27 percent less survival than at the baseline f 11,154 feet. Accrding t the researchers, this survival is “very acceptable.”
“These planted places wuld finally serve as verwintering sites fr the mnarch butterfly under warmer climates,” said Saenz-Rmer. “In fact, as the earth heats, mnarch butterflies have established new and large clnies at clder places, which suggests that they already are searching fr new places t verwinter. Once ur seedlings are fully grwn, they will hpefully discver ur planting site, t.”

      A. It’s the peak f the vlcan.B. It’s fit fr mnarchs.
      C. It’s the survival pint f seedlings.D. It’s ideal fr sacred fir trees.
      14. What des Paragraph 5 mainly shw?

      B. The higher the altitude was, the wrse the seedlings grew.
      C. Living cnditins fr mnarch butterflies were difficult.
      D. The seedlings were less likely t survive at lwer altitudes.
      15. What des Saenz-Rmer cnclude abut mnarchs?
