In 2008, he wrked as head veterinarian at a cuntry-run animal shelter in an area struck by the Great Recessin. He saw pets abandned and the wrk was extremely depressing. Fur years int the shelter jb, Stewart said he was burned ut with guilt and ready t quit.
Then ne mrning n his way t wrk, he saw a hmeless man and a dg. He treated the dg’s skin cnditin and the animal was transfrmed. The wner was beynd grateful and said, “Thanks fr nt ignring me and fr treating my dg.” “That was the mment fr me. I gt back t saving animals and ding it n my wn terms.” Stewart said.
A few weeks later he set up a pp-up veterinary clinic at a sup kitchen, and when clients there suggested he take his services further, his new jb as “Street Vet” began. Many f the peple Stewart serves are nt just grateful fr the help but als frm a deep bnd with him, seeing him as smene wh nt nly treats their pets but als acknwledges their humanity.
“I can dream a little bit that peple frm all ver the wrld will want t emulate what I d. ”Stewart said. Right nw, he is building a netwrk f trusted vlunteers, technicians with hspitals and clinics. “These are all peple wh just reached ut and said, ‘I’m inspired by what yu d. Hw d I d it?’” he said.

Chinese scientists have created starch (淀粉), a type f cmplex carbhydrate fund in plants, using carbn dixide, hydrgen and electricity.
Experts say if such technique can be scaled-up (大规模) t the level f industrializatin, it may revlutinize hw this key nutrient and industrial ingredient is made, since it des nt require farming and prcessing a large quantity f starchy crps such as sweet ptates and crn, thus saving mre water, fertilizer, and arable land.
It may als be used t recycle carbn dixide int a cnsumable prduct. This will help reduce carbn emissins and fight climate change, especially if the electricity used is frm renewable surces like slar and wind.
In space explratin it may prvide a sustainable fd surce fr astrnauts as they travel lng distances in space and try t clnize ther planets where grwing fd is impssible. Future space travelers may simply turn the carbn dixide they breathe ut int fd they eat.
Ma Yanhe, the directr f the Tianjin Institute f Industrial Bitechnlgy f the Chinese Academy f Sciences, says starch and ther cmplex carbhydrates make up 60 t 80 percent f the human diet.
“Our breakthrugh demnstrates that creating a cmplex cmpund like starch is achievable in a lab, and there are many industries that can benefit frm this technlgy,” he says.
Plants create carbhydrates like starch thrugh phtsynthesis (光合作用), which is an extremely cmplex prcess, says Ma, adding that it will take a plant abut 60 steps t turn carbn dixide, water and sunlight int starch.
Cai Ta, ne f the first authrs f the study, says fr six years, his team has been fcusing n a single prject: hw t make starch, but d it at a higher speed. He says their methd invlves first cnverting carbn dixide and hydrgen gas int methanl (甲醇). Scientists then piece these single-carbn mlecules like a puzzle int bigger and mre cmplex mlecules via enzymatic (酶的) prcesses.
With the help f supercmputing, Chinese scientists have simplified the natural starch making prcess frm abut 60 int 11 steps and prduced starch. Thellab-made starch is chemically identical t starch in nature.
      28. Which is NOT a ptential benefit if the technique can be used n an industrial level?
      A. It will have a psitive influence n climate change.
      B. It will help prduce renewable resurces such as slar and wind.
      C. It will ffer a practical fd slutin fr astrnauts.
      D. It will help save several surces frm water t farming land.
      29. Which might be the biggest difficulty in creating the lab-made starch?
      A. Making starch faster.
      B. Cllecting enugh raw materials.
      C. Repeating the phtsynthesis f plants.
      D. Invlving methanl in the making prcess.
      30. What’s the best title fr the passage?
      A. Starch, an imprtant cmplex carbhydrate.
      B. The great benefits f starch.
      C. Chinese scientists successfully turn carbn dixide int starch.
      D. Chinese scientists make cntributins t climate change.
      31. In which part f a newspaper culd yu mst prbably read the text?
      A. Science.B. Lifestyle.C. Envirnment.D. Health.
      D
Active nise cntrl technlgy is used by nise-canceling headphnes t minimize r cmpletely blck ut utside nise. Hwever, despite the many advancements in technlgy, peple still dn’t have much cntrl ver which sunds their headphnes blck ut and which they let pass.
Nw, deep learning algrithms have been develped by a grup f academics at the University f Washingtn that enable users t select which nises t filter thrugh their headphnes in real-time. The system has been named “semantic hearing” by its creatrs.
The Al-pwered headphnes remve all backgrund nise by streaming recrded audi t a smartphne that is linked t the devices. Thrugh this prcess, the headphne users can chse t strengthen r cancel ut 20 types f sunds, using vice cmmands r a smartphne app. The headphnes will then nly let thrugh the sunds that have been chsen by the wearer.
“The challenge is that the sunds headphne wearers hear need t syn (同步) with their visual senses. This means the neural algrithms must prcess sunds in under a hundredth f a secnd.” said senir authr Shyam Gllakta, a UW prfessr.
Due t this time cnstraint the semantic hearing system chses a prcess that relies n nises cmmunicated n a device like a linked smartphne. Furthermre, in rder fr humans t cntinue t effectively experience sunds in their envirnment, the system needs t maintain these delays because sunds cming frm different directins enter peple’s ears at different times.
Trials were undertaken by the researchers in a variety f settings. The semantic hearing system was able t islate target sunds, while at the same time remving backgrund nise. In terms f the system’s audi utput fr the desired sunds, 22 participants gave it an average rating higher than they assigned t the riginal nise recrdings.
There were, hwever, a few disadvantages: the AI-pwered system ccasinally had truble recgnizing sunds that were t similar. The researchers said that the system culd prduce better results if its machine learning mdels were trained n mre real wrld data.
      32. Which f the fllwing is True abut deep learning algrithms?
      A. It culd prmte users’ listening ability.B. It culd help users remve unwanted nise.
      C. It aims t stp peple entering nisy areas.D. It has been widely applied in cmmunicatin.
33 What shuld the neural algrithms d accrding t Shyam Gllakta?
      A. Carefully select the headphne users.B. Prcess data withut nticeable delay.
      C. Get rid f the pssible time cnstraint.D. Imprve the quality f smartphnes.
      34. What did the researchers find abut the system in the trials?
      A. It culd imprve individual listening experience.
      B. It culd help them recgnize participants’ vices.
      C. It has mre disadvantages than the advantages.
      D. It’s suitable t strengthen the backgrund nise.
      35. What is the passage mainly abut?
      A. The semantic hearing system still has sme drawbacks.
      B. The semantic hearing system can recgnize human speech.
      C. AI nise-canceling headphnes let yu chse what yu hear.
      D. AI nise-canceling headphnes present a cmmercial versin.
