A recent deep-sea expeditin ff Chile’s cast has revealed extrardinary marine (海洋的) discveries, including mre than 100 ptentially new species and fur massive underwater muntains.
Between Jan. 8 and Feb. 11, researchers n bard the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s (SOI) research ship Falkr explred the seaflr ff the cast f Chile. The team mapped 20,400 square miles (52,800 km2) f seaflr, uncvering fur seamunts. The largest, named Slit (“alne” in Spanish), rises 11,581 feet (3,530m) abve the seaflr, making it mre than fur times taller than the wrld’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, which stands at 2,717 feet (828m) tall. While new species within the Juan Fernández and Nazca-Desventuradas marine parks are legally prtected frm these threats, the seamunts alng the Nazca and Salas y Gómez Ridges are currently prtected.
This research trip is the latest f several SOI expeditins that have mapped seamunts in the sutheast Pacific in recent years. The institute previusly mapped fur ther huge seamunts during an expeditin ff the cast f Chile and Peru. Such “bilgical htspts” are critical t understanding marine bidiversity, said SOI directr Jytika Virmani, as they “advance ur knwledge f life n Earth”.
12. Why is the Burj Khalifa mentined in paragraph 2?
A T criticize human cnstructin prjects.
B. T explain why the expeditin tk place in Chile.
C. T emphasize hw tall a newly discvered seamunt is.
D. T cmpare mdern architecture with underwater structures.
13. Hw des Javier Sellanes feel abut the discveries?
A. Wrried.B. Surprised.C. Regretful.D. Grateful.
14. What is the main cncern abut the new species fund?
A. Sme f them are at risk.B. The water temperature is changing.
C. They are t dark t explre.D. There are t many turists visiting.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly abut?

B. The cntinuatin f SOP’s research and its value.
C. The imprtance f prtecting underwater habitats.
