I have always been prud f my handwriting, a skill I was taught in grade schl. The teacher was teaching us the Palmer Penmanship Methd, drilling int us the imprtance f frming big flwing lines when we wrte g’s and s’s as well as beautiful f’s that in my mind were like fairy tale princesses wearing fancy hats while extending their right ft. We were strictly prhibited frm using blck letters n ur hmewrk, as they lack the beauty.

One friend went s far as t ask if I culd use blck letters next time s that she culd understand what I was writing.
Initially, I was angry. I had made the effrt t cver an entire pstcard with what I viewed as nt just handwriting but calligraphy. But then I shwed an English friend a pstcard I'd just written, and he said that the nly thing that was readily understandable was the letters “U. S. A.” The rest f it, he plitely suggested, lked like “chicken scrawl”.
Lking at the pstcard dispassinately, I unwillingly admit that he has a pint. All the m’s and n’s run tgether,
and the l’s lk like l’s. The a’s are indistinguishable frm the q’s. S, frm nw n, I'm taking their advice and using blck letters t cmmunicate.
In fact, I just nw sent an ld friend a pstcard. But this time, I simply wrte — in big blck letters: DEAR ALICE:
      HI.
      JOE.
I hpe she gets the message.

Outside the windw it was like a busy party where peple kept cming and ging. The entrance f the stre was crwded, with custmers rushing in and ut as usual. Sme regular custmers frm ur stre must have seen me in that awkward mment, but I was t lst in my sadness t ntice anyne arund.
After what seemed like hurs, I had t pull myself tgether, wiping my tears and taking deep breaths befre returning t wrk. I mechanically went abut my business with a frced smile, helping custmers and stcking shelves, my mind a thusand miles away. Shrtly after, I was apprached by ne f my clleagues, saying there was smething t my car. I had him take it ff my car and bring it in t me. It was a bunch f beautiful and delicate flwers.

【答案】Beside was a card and I pened it. On the card were the wrds, “We nticed yur sadness and wanted t bring sme sunshine. Sending yu lve and strength.” There was nly a phne number at the bttm. I stared at it, a
lump frming in my thrat. The beautiful buquet f lilies and daisies beside me released a sweet fragrance, as if trying t wrap me in a warm embrace. I culdn’t believe that a stranger had taken the time t ffer cmfrt during my darkest hur.
I phned the number n the card. A gentle vice answered n the secnd ring. “Hell?” she said. “This is the ne wh gt yur flwers,” I replied, my vice thick with emtin. She intrduced herself as Emily, a regular custmer. “I saw yu crying—lst my mm t cancer t,” she said sftly. We talked abut grief and small cmfrts.
