I am Maria Martignni. When I cmpleted a dctral prgram in mathematical bilgy I wasn’t sure where I saw my career ging. But satisfying my curisity fr knwledge as a pstdc seemed mre exciting. The prblem was what t d afterward. When peple wuld ask me, “What wuld yu like t d next?” and I had n answer t give and began t wrry. My research was fun, but I dubted it culd ever be useful. My peers (同辈) asked sharp questins during academic discussins. I culd nt get rid f the feeling that I was just pretending.
It was nly during my third pstdc that I experienced a change f attitude. It happened after I vlunteered t c-lead a grup f scientists writing a perspective piece abut what future research was needed in ur field. The senir researchers n the team cmmented that althugh the draft still needed sme significant changes, it was suitable fr submissin t a high-impact jurnal. This statement changed my attitude. Clearly, they saw me as knwledgeable and cmpetent. Maybe I needed t value my wn prfessinal skills a little mre highly?
I decided t d my best t imprve the article — spending mre than a year reading dzens f papers, leading grup discussins, and editing the article. The prcess was lng and dull. But the mre time I devted t it, the mre knwledge I gained, and the mre cnfident I grew. Ultimately, I landed a tenure-track psitin.
When students ask me fr advice, I usually tell them that ne des nt need t have a clear life plan t belng in science. Many knw frm the start that they want t be researchers. But fr thers the path t being a scientist unflds gradually, with uncertainties alng the way. As researchers, part f ur missin invlves finding ur way withut always knwing where we are ging. By the way, always keep in mind that it is self-trust that cunts.

On average, American kids ages 3 t 12 spent 29 hurs a week in schl, eight hurs mre than they did in 1981. They als did mre husehld wrk and participated in mre f such rganized activities as sccer and ballet. Invlvement in sprts, in particular, rse almst 50% frm 1981 t 1997: bys nw spend an average f fur hurs a week playing sprts; girls lg hall that time. A chief reasn, she says, is that mre mthers are wrking utside the hme. (Nevertheless, children in bth duble-incme and “male breadwinner” husehlds spent cmparable amunts f time interacting with their parents 19 hurs and 22 hurs respectively. In cntrast, children spent nly 9 hurs with their single mthers.)
All wrk and n play culd make fr sme very messed-up kids. “Play is the mst pwerful way a child explres the wrld and learns abut himself,” says T. Berry Brazeltn, prfessr at Harvard Medical Schl Unstructured play encurages independent thinking and allws the yung t negtiate their relatinships with their peers, but kids ages 3 t 12 spent nly 12 hurs a week engaged in it.
The children sampled spent a quarter f their rapidly decreasing “free time” watching televisin. But that, believe it r nt, was ne f the findings parents might regard as gd news. If they’re spending less time in frnt f the TV set, hwever, kids aren’t replacing it with reading. Despite effrts t get kids mre interested in bks, the children spent just ver an hur a week reading. Let’s face it, wh’s gt the time?

In the U. S., peple eat mre prtein than they need t, which might nt be bad fr human health, but des pse a prblem fr the cuntry’s waterways. The natin’s wastewater is laded with the leftvers (残留物) frm prtein digestin: nitrgen (氮) cmpunds that can feed harmful algal blms (藻华) and pllute the air and drinking water.
Maya Almaraz, a bigechemist at the University f Califrnia, Davis, and her team wanted t see hw much f this nitrgen entered int the U. S. wastewater system because f a prtein-heavy diet. The researchers fund that the majrity f nitrgen pllutin present in wastewater — sme 67 t 100 precent — is a by-prduct f water peple cnsume.
Once it enters the envirnment, the nitrgen can have a series f eclgical impacts. It helps algae grw much faster than they wuld nrmally, which is harmful t humans, ther animals and plants. And when the algae eventually die, the prblem is nt ver. Micrrganisms (微生物) that feed n dead algae use up the xygen in the water, leading t “dead znes”, where many species simply cannt survive, in rivers, lakes and ceans.
Althugh it is pssible t treat algal blms, many f the current methds are nt always effective at getting rid f all f the harmful grwth. Sme f these methds can even lead t additinal pllutin. S the best strategy fr dealing with the effects f nitrgen pllutin is preventin, says Patricia Glibert, an cean scientist at the University f Maryland. Almaraz and her team suggest that cntrlling nitrgen pllutin culd be apprached mre quickly with a change in eating habits that culd save billins f dllars in the lng term.
      12. Which aspect f Americans’ diet des Almaraz’s research fcus n ?
      A. Its amunt.B. Its variety.C. Its make-up.D. Its effect.
      13. What causes “dead znes” in the water?
      A. Death f lts f healthy algae.B. N xygen fr many species.
      C. Micrrganisms’ ver-cnsumptin f nutrients.D. Pisnus chemicals released by harmful algae.
      14. What is the prblem with current algal blm treatment methds?
      A. They are t cstly.B. They are time-cnsuming.
      C. They may cause mre pllutin.D. They may kill all algae.
      15. What des the text mainly tell us?
      A. Preventin is better than cure in treating air pllutin.
      B. Researchers find slutins t the wastewater prblem.
      C. It is high time t treat wild algae grwth.
      D. Eating t much prtein harms the planet.
