We painted clrful pictures, kicked sccer balls acrss the field, and watched vinegar and baking sda fizz in clear cups. Every activity turned ur classrm int a place fr discvery and fun.
I enjyed spending time with the kids I was helping and learning alngside. That was my favrite part abut the prgram. One memrable class invlved making bubbles (肥皂泡). The children ran after the flating bubbles, shuting with delight, and I felt like a child again, caught up in their wnder. That simple game shwed me hw small jys can turn a nrmal day int smething special.
The psitive effect f ur classes rippled thrughut the schl. Other students nticed hw happy ur classrm sunded. They began t jin in, and sn the entire learning center felt warmer and mre welcming.
Hwever, as I started this jurney, I fund it hard t stay calm when the children became nisy. But as I spent mre time with them, I learned patience, kindness, and hw t shw empathy (同理心). I discvered that gentle wrds and clear instructins culd turn disrder int rder. My “little friends” taught me as much as I taught them.
The energy and jy that filled the rm nt nly impacted the children but left a lng-lasting mark n me. They made me realize that educatin ges beynd textbks. It’s abut caring fr each student, fanning their curisity, and discvering the wnders f the wrld, ne activity at a time.

Peple ften ask Angela Duckwrth what results in success. It’s an understandable questin, given the pineering wrk Duckwrth, a psychlgist at the University f Pennsylvania, has dne in the area f grit—the passin and determinatin t keep wrking tward lng-term gals. But Duckwrth’s recent research with teams at Duke University and West Pint shws that grit is nly part f the picture.
In a study f mre than 11,000 cadets(学员)ver ten years, the researchers measured three main qualities: cgnitive(认知的)ability(using SAT r ACT scres), grit(using Duckwrth’s twelve-questin Grit Scale), and physical fitness(timed runs, pull-ups, and sit-ups). They als recrded which cadets finished the six-week “Beast Barracks” training, and graduated in fur years, and their grades in academic, military, and physical tests.
“We gathered all this data in part s we culd answer mre definitively the questin f whether grit brught abut success utcmes. At the same time, we wanted t explre where, perhaps, grit wasn’t the mst imprtant factr,” says Duckwrth. During Beast Barracks, fr example, grit is extremely imprtant. But during the fur years f cmbined classrm time and physical training that fllw, cgnitive ability is the strngest predictr f academic grades. Finally, grit and physical ability play a greater rle than cgnitive ability in determining wh will graduate frm West Pint in fur years versus wh might leave befre then.
Duckwrth stresses that grit is nt the nly determinant f success. Grit helps peple push thrugh hard mments, but intelligence and physical strength als shape lng-term utcmes. Fr schls and cmpanies, this means nly depending n test scres misses ther imprtant qualities. Duckwrth and her team are nw develping new tls t measure nncgnitive ability like kindness and curisity.
By recgnizing the value f different strengths—grit, health, and character—we can better supprt peple in achieving their gals. It turns ut that success cmes frm learning t balance and develp all f these qualities tgether.
      8. Hw des the authr explain the idea “grit” in paragraph 1?
      A. By giving a definitin.B. By listing figures.
C By using examples.D. By describing a prcess.
      9. What des the underlined wrd “They” in paragraph 2 refer t?
      A. Sprtsmen.B. Researchers.C. Army cadets.D. Fitness caches.
      10. What des Duckwrth’s recent study find?
      A. Grit is the nly determinant f success.B. Physical strength is ur first chice.
      C. Cgnitive ability plays a decisive rle.D. Each quality matters at different stages.
      11. Which is the mst suitable title fr the text?
      A. What Makes a Happy LifeB. What Leads t Success
      C. Hw t Pick up CurageD. Hw t Build Cnfidence

Walking arund mst large cities in Eurpe and the United States, yu may find it easy and cheap t get shared bikes and cars ready t use with a tap n yur phne — unless yu are lder, have a disability, lack a smartphne r credit card, r live in a prer neighbrhd. These services usually appear in richer areas and ften can’t handle wheelchairs r child seats. As a result, mst riders are yung, able-bdied, well-ff, and male.
Shared mbility culd be a key part f a mre sustainable (可持续的) transprtatin system. If shared mbility culd wrk fr everyne, it might cut city traffic by as much as 90 percent and reduce transprt emissins (排放) by half. But tday, private cars still cver 61 percent f all travel in the Glbal Nrth. T mve mre peple away frm private cars t shared nes is an imprtant first step, because a lt f peple are left ut tday.
A 2019 study f 10 US cities, fr example, shwed that a fifth f lw-incme Americans still dn’t have a smartphne and almst a quarter dn’t have a bank accunt — bth necessary fr using mst shared mbility services. A 2017 survey in Philadelphia, Chicag and Brklyn shwed that lw-incme peple are just as interested in bikesharing as ther grups, but less likely t use such a system: While 10 percent f higher-incme peple were members f a bikeshare system, nly tw percent f lwer-incme peple were.
Hw can we bridge the accessibility gap? In several US cities, lw-incme subsidy (补贴) prgrams have increased bikeshare use amng underserved grups. In Buffal, New Yrk, an rganizatin launched an “E-Bike Library” using 3,000 e-bikes retired by a private cmpany. 71 percent f its members tried e-bikes fr the first time, and 84 percent were lw-incme peple.
Simple fixes can make a big difference. When mbility prviders include diverse vices in planning and care mre abut users’ needs, they build services that wrk fr everyne. In that case, shared mbility can becme truly fair, green, and effective.
      12. What des the authr intend t pint ut in paragraph 1?
      A. Kids shuld respect wheelchair users.B. Peple are glued t their mbile phnes.
      C. Access t shared mbility is unequal.D. It’s hard t find a shared car in the US.
      13. What percentage f all travel in the Glbal Nrth d private cars accunt fr?
      A. 50%.B. 61%.C. 75%.D. 90%.
      14. What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
      A. The challenges facing shared mbility.B. A significant increase in peple’s incme.
      C. The dwnside f the bikeshare service.D. A change in persnal preference fr bikes.
      15. What des the authr expect mbility prviders t d?
      A. Fix brken bikes in time.B. Put mre effrt int e-cars.
      C. Vice their views n travel.D. Meet custmers’ real needs.
      【答案】12. C 13. B 14. A 15. D
