In August 2024, tw high schl students, Rsa Mendza Ssa and Shanni Valeria Mra Fajard, frm Mexic were awarded the Diplma f Excellence at the 2024 Stckhlm Junir Water Prize. It is a cmpetitin fr students aged 15 t 20 wh have develped research prjects that can help slve majr water challenges. The cmpetitin attracts tens f thusands f students frm abut 35 cuntries each year.
The tw girls develped a prcess t efficiently reuse inked water, a cmmn side prduct in varius industries, making it a useful resurce fr grwing vegetables. This methd nt nly helps t save water but als prmtes green agriculture.
The prject idea was inspired by the girls’ link with their cmmunity’s textile heritage. “In ur village, textiles are nt just prducts; they are a symbl f ur traditins, made with techniques passed dwn thrugh generatins,” explained Ssa, “but the use f artificial dyes (染料)mled t the direct dispsal f dirty water int ur envirnment.” This threatened their lcal water bdies and sil, endangering bth the lcals’ health and their envirnmentally friendly practices.
Faced with this dilemma, they made a filtratin(过滤)system at hme with materials frm their area. They filled fur cntainers with different kinds f materials, including cttn, charcal, gravel, and sand. It currently specifies 53 Wrld Heritage sites under threat f “serius and specific dangers” due t factrs such as climate change, armed cnflict, and develpment pressures. The accelerated degeneratin f these cultural treasures is a reality that shuld cncern the wrld, since the yunger generatin may nt have the pprtunity t visit them.
Fr this reasn, insurance cmpany Budget Direct, and NeMam Studis, a creative studi based in the UK, have created a series f GIFs t restre Wrld Heritage sites and demnstrate what these ruins wuld have lked like if they had been preserved.
Drawing attentin t sites at risk, the prject aims t give everyne the pprtunity t visit these sites virtually. It started with in-depth research arund the sites n the List f Wrld Heritage in Danger. Based n the results, the team made a selectin accrding t tw main criteria: First, they were man-made places. Secnd, they still had standing elements. Fcusing n the selected sites, the team wrked with architects Jelena Ppvic and Keremcan Kirilmaz and industrial designer Erdem Batirbek t research and illustrate six f these legendary lcatins.

Restricting meals t early in the day did nt affect weight amng verweight adults with prediabetes r diabetes(糖尿病), accrding t a research presented at the American Heart Assciatin's Scientific Sessins 2020.
“We have wndered fr a lng time if when ne eats during the day affects the way the bdy uses and stres energy,” said study authr Nisa M. Maruthur, assciate prfessr f medicine in Jhns Hpkins University in Baltimre. “Mst previus studies have nt cntrlled the number f calries, s it wasn't clear if peple wh ate earlier just ate fewer calries. In this study, the nly thing we changed was the time f eating in the day.”
Maruthur and clleagues fllwed 41 verweight adults in a 12-week study. Mst participants(参与者)(90%)were African American wmen with prediabetes r diabetes, and average age f 59 years. Twenty-ne f the adults fllwed a time-restricted eating pattern, limiting eating t specific hurs f the day and ate 80% f their calries befre 1 pm. The remaining 20 participants ate at usual times during a 12-hur windw, cnsuming half f their daily calries after 5 pm fr the entire 12 weeks.
