It’s here that he has made mst f his 1,600 recrdings, winning awards including a Grammy in 2003.
Keener’s lve fr music started in 1967 when, at 13, he discvered Gramphne magazine in his birthday present. Attracted by its reviews, he spent hurs cmparing recrdings — Elgar’s Cell Cncert by du Pré versus Furnier, fr example — and was sn advising his parents n their recrd cllectin.
After graduating frm Edinburgh in 1975, Keener tried teaching but felt it wasn’t right fr him. In rder t find an pprtunity t wrk in a recrd cmpany, he came up with a crazy idea: he called Hi-Fi News & Recrd Review, lying abut having an interview arranged with André Previn — wh kindly agreed when Keener apprached him in persn. This became ne f his first published articles.
Unhappy with teaching, Keener packed up and left Sctland fr Lndn. After being refused by a recrd shp due t pay, he insisted: “I dn’t care what yu pay me. When can I start?” Sn he was wrking at EMG Handmade Gramphnes, meeting industry figures and learning the prducer’s skill. In 1980, his break came with Hyperin Recrds.
His first piece — recrding the Chpin Études — was filled with truble, ending in tears. The recrding was shelved, but his mentr (导师) saw prmise and gave him anther chance. Over time, Keener develped key prducer features: deep listening, musical understanding, and peple skills.
Asked abut AI, he jkes, “I hpe I’m dead when it takes ver.” His advice t future prducers? “Knw the standard repertire (全部技能). It’s the best way t earn an artist’s trust.”
      4. What d we knw abut Andrew Keener’s wrkspace?
      A. It reflects his careless attitude.B. It is a functinal wrkspace.

Have yu ever smelled flwers and thught, “Ww, these clrs and smells just belng tgether”? That kind f all-in-ne feeling is what Integrated Infrmatin Thery (IIT,整合信息论) tries t explain. IIT is a brave (and kind f brain-mixing) idea abut hw we’re aware f the wrld, put frward by brain scientist Giuli Tnni in the early 2000s.
The basic idea? Awareness happens when parts f a system — like yur brain — wrk tgether and share infrmatin in a super-cnnected way. Think f it like a grup chat: if everyne’s talking and sharing ideas, the grup knws mre than any ne persn alne. That “tgetherness” is measured by smething called “phi” (yes, it sunds like a superher name). The higher the phi, the mre aware the system might be.
Fr example, the uter part f yur brain — the part that helps yu think, feel, and daydream in class — is full f cnnectins. S it prbably has a high phi. But the lwer parts f the brain, even thugh they have lts f neurns (神经元), dn’t talk t each ther much. And if they’re damaged, peple usually stay aware — s maybe they dn’t matter as much fr awareness.
Here’s where IIT gets strange: it says that anything with high phi — even a great cmputer chip — might be a little bit aware. Fr example, is yur taster (烤面包机) secretly thinking abut yur breakfast? Nt everyne is a fan. In 2023, scientist Andrea Sddu and his team tried measuring phi in real brains during sleep. They fund phi drpped in tw areas — pssibly key spts fr awareness. Still, critics (批评家) like Sctt Aarnsn say thse drps just shw nrmal brain changes. In fact, 124 brain scientists even signed a letter calling IIT “fake (假的) science”.
Supprters argue IIT isn’t perfect, but it’s still a real idea wrth explring. After all, even big ideas start small — just like neurns.
      8. Hw des the authr explain the basic idea f IIT?
      A. By quting frm a brain scientist.B. By presenting a detailed prcess.
      C. By cmparing it t a cmmn situatin.D. By shwing the picture prduced by IIT.
      9. What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
      A. The higher phi in a damaged brain.B. The neurn differences in brain parts.
      C. The functin f neurns and awareness.D. The example f phi-awareness relatinship.
      10. What is the critics’ main argument abut IIT?
      A. Phi reflects nrmal brain changes.B. It verstates the rle f awareness.
      C. It ignres the variety f brain structure.D. Experiments fail t include enugh peple.
      11. Which is the best title fr the text?
      A. Hw IIT Imprves Brain Science
      B. IIT: An Argued Thery f Awareness
      C. Hw Brain Injuries Prve Mdern Neurscience
      D. Phi: A New Tl fr Measuring Cmputer Awareness
      【答案】8. C 9. D 10. A 11. B
      D
In 2020, French scientists Drs Laurence Gaume and Marin Desquilbet felt wrried by a new wrldwide study abut disappearing insects called InsectChange. Its results shwed that the number f insects n land was drpping, but water insects were ding well — which didn’t match what many studies had fund. “We thught the results were t hpeful,” says Desquilbet, an envirnmental expert at the Tuluse Schl f Ecnmics.
The InsectChange study cllected infrmatin frm arund the wrld. Scientists frm Germany, Russia, and the U. S. fund that the number f land insects was drpping by 9% every ten years, while that f water insects was rising by 11%. This made it seem like insect ppulatins had mixed changes.
But ver 60 scientists questined the findings. Desquilbet and Gaume studied the data clsely and said they fund ver 530 mistakes in methds and data examining. Out f 165 sets f data, 161 had at least ne prblem. Issues included cnfusing measurement units, math errrs that hid true patterns, and cunting animals like shellfish (贝类), snails, and wrms — which aren’t insects—especially in water data.
One clear example came frm a lake in Kazakhstan, where data shwed that the number f insects had increased ver a perid f 100 years. But 95% f the creatures recrded were freign shellfish. Many datasets als came frm human-made prjects t help insects — places that dn’ t shw real nature. “Peple dn’t realize the hidden prblems,” Gaume warns.
The InsectChange team accepted the feedback (反馈). “Our data has errrs — like all studies d,” says prject leader Dr. Rel Van Klink. He argues these mistakes dn’t change the main idea. A crrected cpy f the study is being made.
This discussin shws a bigger prblem: hw scientists track the variety f living things during envirnmental emergencies (紧急情况). “Science is a prcess, nt perfect answers,” says eclgist Dr. Manu Saunders. Mistakes will happen, but asking questins, discussing penly, and sharing data are key t understanding ur changing planet.
      12. What cncerned Gaume and Desquilbet abut the study?
      A. The lack f experts’ cmments.B. The lack f different data inclusin.
      C. The ver-ppulatin f glbal insects.D. The ver-psitive findings abut water insects.
      13. Which f the fllwing is a mistake in the InsectChange study?
      A. Measuring tls were misused.B. T fewer mistakes were fund.
      C. Shellfish were cnsidered as insects.D. Fcuses were fixed n natural living places.
      14. Hw did the InsectChange team respnd t the dubt?
      A. They refused t make cmments.B. They stpped the study sn.
      C. They said thers were in the wrng.D. They admitted errrs readily.
      15. What is the main purpse f the text?
      A. T pint ut the methds f scientists.
      B. T supprt stricter insect prtectin laws.
      C. T stress the imprtance f scientific research.
      D. T prve the glbal increase f water insects.

With each even breath, the smell f the earth and trees filled Ursula. She knew this path by heart — her families walked the same path every year. This yearly hike was her habit, a quiet traditin t hnr her mther’s memry. As she reached the tp at nn, she felt the cl wind. The view always tk her breath away — endless green frests rlling int the distant skyline. She stayed lnger than usual, running her fingers ver the uneven rck, under where her mther had been placed s many years. “I miss yu,” she whispered t the wind.
The way dwn went smthly at first. Then, a misstep. Her right ft caught in an unseen gap. A sharp “crack (咔嚓声)” rang thrugh the silent wds as terrible pan sht up her leg. She climbed nt the rcky path, with her hands getting caught against stnes.
Gasping (喘气), she pushed herself up and stpped mving. Her ft bent (弯曲) at a strange psitin. A wave f pain hit her. “This can’t be happening.” Her heart beat fast like a trapped bird. She was alne. N ne knew she’d cme tday. The realizatin sent icy fingers thrugh her whle bdy.
“Help!” Her vice sunded pitifully small in the huge wilderness. Only the indifferent sunds f birds answered. She shuted again, luder this time. Minutes felt like frever. Darkness lengthened. The muntain air grew clder.
“What if n ne cmes?” Dark thughts ccurred — images f spending the night n the path, and f animals appraching her helpless frm. She sught fr her phne. N pwer. A cry escaped her muth.
