Speaking mre than ne language may benefit children’s executive (执行的) functin — especially thse with autism spectrum (自闭症谱系) disrder (ASD), a recent analysis suggests.
The study, published in Autism Research, lked at 116 children aged 7 thrugh 12. Of thse, 53 had autism spectrum disrder and 63 did nt, thugh 4 children were later excluded. Twenty-ne f the children with ASD spke mre than ne language, and 35 f the typically develping children were multilingual (讲多种语言的). Mst f the multilingual children spke English and Spanish, thugh sme spke Prtuguese, Hebrew, French, Japanese r Bulgarian in additin t English.
The researchers tested the children’s executive functin abilities and asked parents t fill ut surveys assessing autism behavirs such as viewpint taking — the ability t understand viewpints ther than ne’s wn — and scial cmmunicatin.
The multilingual children all demnstrated better executive functin than their cunterparts wh spke just ne language, regardless f whether they were n the autism spectrum. But the effect was mre salient in multilingual kids with ASD. These kids had much better self-cntrl than thse wh nly spke ne language and had ASD.
