“Grwing fruit trees is a very simple way t stay in lve with ur wrld,” says Vivian Keh, playwright and daughter f immigrants, hlding a basket f persimmns(柿子) she's grwn t feel cnnected t her Krean ancestrs. Keh is just ne f the 50remarkable subjects in naturalist writer Amy Stewart's The Tree Cllectrs: Tales f Arbreal Obsessin, a cllectin f prtraits f peple transfrmed by their lve f trees.
Initially, trees struck Stewart as an dd thing t cllect. Fascinated by this cmmunity f enthusiasts, she discvered educatrs, preservatınists and visinaries, all drawn t a kind f curatin, mtivated by reasns as diverse as their prjects. They plant trees in public and private spaces bth mdest and expansive, nurturing(培育)their cllectins t hnr belved dead, attract wildlife, preserve rare species, cnnect t histry, invest in the future, grw fd and create beauty.
Steward categrizes these tree cllectrs accrding t their sense f purpse. Kenneth Høegh, ne f the bk’s “eclgists”, tests which cld-lving species might grw in a warming and histrically treeless Greenland. “Healer” Je Hamiltn plants lbllly pines n a parcel f land he gt frm his enslaved ancestrs with an eye tward lng-term sustainable frestry which he hpes will establish a surce f general wealth fr his family. Reagan Wytsalucy has a plan t restre traditinal peach rchards n Navaj land as ne f the “cmmunity builders” wh seek t bring peple tgether.
Adding t the bk's charm are Stewart's waterclr illustratins— she gives us a lk at each f her human subjects while als catalging the mst wnderful qualities f featured trees, such as Seussian eucalyptus seed pds and delicate camellia blssms.
After spending time in this varied cmmnwealth, yu'll undubtedly experience an intense desire t rest under the shade f a leafy ak. But smething even deeper is happening here: by creating a space fr peple t talk abut smething they lve. “Hw ften d any f us get a chance t pur ur hearts ut t a stranger?” she writes. “Smehw, talking abut trees made it pssible.”

Shanya Gill, a 12-year-ld middle schler frm San Jse, Califrnia, wn the tp award in the Sciety fr Science’s annual middle schl cmpetitin fr designing a fire detectin system that is superir t existing nes, accrding t a press release frm the rganizatin.
Shanya’s inspiratin came after a fire destryed a restaurant in her neighbrhd during the summer f 2022, reprted Washingtn Pst. “I had never really experienced smething like that befre,” she tld Washingtn Pst abut the early mrning fire at Hlder’s Cuntry Inn, which started in the kitchen. “They had smke detectrs, and yet it still burned dwn,” she added.
After she studied fire statistics and saw hw cmmn fires are, Shanya decided that she was ging t d smething abut it. She spent mre than a year develping a fire detectin system that she believes culd prevent the fire. That’s because smke detectrs sense active fires frm the smke in the air, while Shanya’s thermal imaging device is designed t stp fires frm ccurring.
Her cmplex system has tw parts, a thermal camera and a Raspberry Pi, a tiny cmputer. The device detects when a heat surce has been left unattended fr ten minutes and sends a text message alert.
Creating the prttype (原型) was difficult and the hardest part was the cding. “I had tw designs, and the final device succeeded because it utperfrms smke detectrs in speed and accuracy.” Shanya wants t bring the csts dwn t $60 t make it even mre affrdable than hardwired smke detectrs.
“Shanya saw a prblem and tried hard t slve it, and that’s what we need t encurage with all yung peple,” said Ajmera, president and CEO f Sciety fr Science. Her remarkable research nt nly reflects her talent but als paves the way fr an exciting new future.

      B. By sending a warning mail.
      C. By cntrlling the water tap.
      D. By putting ut a heat surce.
      26. Why did the final device succeed?
      A. It was fast and precise.
      B. It was cheap and simple.
      C. It was cmplex and unique.
      D. It was affrdable and cnvenient.
      27. What may Ajmera agree?
      A. Teenagers are the architect f the future.
      B. A prblem is a chance t bring ut the best.
      C. The thirst fr knwledge is a never-ending ne.

Prper nutritin is crucial fr imprving athletic perfrmance, supprting recvery, and verall health. Nw, a new study frm the University f Suth Australia reveals that it is als key t reducing the risk f injury, especially fr females.
A systematic review f nearly 6,000 adult distance runners explred the link between diet and exercise-related injuries. It fund female runners with lwer energy and fat intakes faced higher injury risks, wh cnsumed 450 fewer calries and 20g less fat daily than uninjured peers (同龄人). Additinally, the study als fund that a lw-fibre diet increased the likelihd f bne stress injuries in bth female and male runners, with bth injured female and male runners having three grams less fibre in their diet per day cmpared t thse wh remained injury-free. Interestingly, runners’ intakes f prtein, alchl, and calcium (钙) did nt influence injury risk.
Sprts dietitian and UniSA researcher, Erin Clebatch, emphasizes that nutritin plays a crucial rle in reducing injury risk. “Distance running is a ppular activity fr many peple, helping them stay healthy and keep fit. Yet abut 50% f adult runners sustain running-related injuries,” Clebatch says. “Nutritin is key t imprving athletic perfrmance, prviding the energy, recvery supprt, and injury preventin needed t maintain bth endurance (忍耐力) and verall health. Many lng-distance runners underestimate their energy needs. When they dn’t fuel their bdies prperly, they increase their injury risk. Recgnizing the impact f diet n injury risk helps reduce it.”
Senir researcher, UniSA’s Dr. Alisn Hill, adds that clinicians need t supprt female runners t achieve sufficient energy and fat intakes while guiding all runners t imprve their fibre cnsumptin. “When runners dn’t cnsume enugh energy, their bdy’s needs g unmet, which ver time can lead t issues like lss f Lean Bdy Mass, tiredness, and bne breaks,” Dr. Hill says. “While this research ffers valuable insights fr runners f all levels, additinal studies are necessary t explre hw these findings apply t a brader range f athletic abilities.”
      28. What des the study find accrding t paragraph 2?
      A. Prtein impacts injury pssibility.
      B. Calcium lessens injury prbability.
      C. Limited energy harms male runners.
      D. Lw fat intake is risky fr female runners.
      29. What can we infer abut running with less energy frm Erin Clebatch’s wrds?
      A. It bsts athletic perfrmance.B. It raises the injury likelihd.
      C. It imprves energy recvery.D. It reduces diet-injury link.
      30. What will the fllw-up study fcus n?
      A. Supprting female runners' diets.B. Guiding fibre cnsumptin ways.
      C. Increasing energy intake levels.D. Applying findings t mre athletes.
      31. Which clumn f a newspaper is the text prbably taken frm?
      A. Entertainment.B. Fashin.C. Wellness.D. Culture.
      D
Wrking with ARIA Research, a startup develping visin fr the blind, Phebe Peng is using technlgically advanced human echlcatin (回声定位) that enables blind users t perceive their surrundings in precise detail.
The prcess uses event cameras which, unlike nrmal cameras that take cmplete images f a scene, track changes in an image ver time, making them ideal fr the bservatin f small bjects like table tennis balls. The images are then prcessed int sund using a specialised algrithm (算法). This is then cmmunicated back t the player via a lt f ludspeakers, ultimately with the aim f allwing players t track the ball and mvements using sunds.
Accrding t Peng, table tennis makes a perfect test case fr the kind f technlgy being develped by ARIA Research. “Table tennis has been played fr decades as a mre accessible versin f tennis. The sprt is beginner-friendly while maintaining a rich level f cmpetitive play. Hwever, like many sprts, it remains difficult fr peple wh suffer visin lss r have lw visin,” said Ms Peng, wh will sn cmplete a Bachelr f Engineering in Sftware Engineering.
“The small size f the ball and table, alng with the mvement f the ball in 3D space, are things that make table tennis difficult t play fr thse with lw visin and cmplete blindness,” said Peng, wh is cmpleting the wrk fr her degree. “Making this sprt mre accessible while als explring the ptential f event cameras were my tw biggest mtivatrs,” she said.
In ne study, using tw perfectly psitined cameras, Ms Peng was able t identify and track a ball in three dimensins in real time. She then fed that data int an algrithm cntrlling the ludspeakers standing alng the sides f the table, which created a sund field matching the psitin f the ball.
While the results are prmising, mre experimentatin will be needed befre the system will be ready fr actual play. “There are limitatins n hw accurately peple can perceive sund lcalisatin. What type f sund shuld be used? Shuld the sund be cntinuus? This is what we’ll be tackling in the next stage f develpment,” said Ms Peng.
      32. Hw are event cameras different frm nrmal nes?
      A. They can have sunds lcated.
      B. They are linked with ludspeakers.
      C. They cnstantly fllw image changes.
      D. They take cmplete images f a scene.
      33. What makes table tennis a perfect test case fr the research?
      A. Its unique feature.B. Its fierce cmpetitin.
      C. Its technical cmplexity.D. Its beginner-friendliness.
      34. What is the last paragraph mainly abut cncerning the study?
      A. Its inspiring results.B. Its prmising future.
      C. Its practical applicatins.D. Its technlgical challenge.
      35. What culd be the best title fr the text?
      A. Technlgy Opens up Blind Table Tennis
      B. Blind Peple Wrk Wnders in Table Tennis
      C. Event Camera Reshapes Future fr the Disabled
      D. Algrithm Helps Translate Imaginatin t Sund
