The ability t remember and recgnize a musical theme des nt seem t be affected by age, unlike many ther frms f memry. Peple with severe Alzheimer’s might nt recgnize faces, but can still sing the sngs f their childhd, says Sarah Sauvé, a music scientist at the University f Lincln.
The effect f age n the ability t recall music has been investigated, but Sauvé was interested in explring this effect in a real-wrld setting such as a cncert.
In her study, she tested hw well a grup f 90 healthy adults aged 18 t 86, were able t recgnize familiar and unfamiliar musical themes at a live cncert and anther 31 peple watched a recrding f the cncert in a labratry. They listened t three pieces: a well-knwn Mzart piece and tw new nes. One new piece had clear meldies (旋律), while the ther was mre unusual. Participants had t recgnize a shrt meldy repeated later in each piece.
The meldic piece frm Mzart was equally well recgnized acrss all ages and musical backgrunds, with n lss f recgnitin as age increased. All participants were less cnfident in recgnizing the theme in the new meldic piece, and even less cnfident with the unfamiliar and unusual piece, but this didn’t change with age either. The study als fund n differences between cncert-gers and lab participants.
Steffen Herff, a cgnitive (认知) neurscientist at the University f Sydney, Australia, says the reasn music memry stay strng might have t d with the emtins that music stirs in peple, which helps it stick in ur memry. “We knw frm general memry research that, effectively, the amygdala — r emtinal prcessing — perates a little bit like an imprtance stamp,” he says.
The study cllected limited data n sme participants’ cgnitive health, and s did nt prvide detailed insights int hw neurdegenerative (神经退行性的) diseases affect memry recall. But Herff says there is great interest in using music as a frm f ‘cgnitive scafflding’ — that is, as a memry aid fr ther infrmatin — in individuals with neurdegenerative cnditins.
      28.What des Sauvé’s study fcus n?
A.The rle music plays in recgnitin tasks.
B.The difference between live and recrded cncerts.

      C.The results f Sauvé’s study.D.The backgrund f the study.

Wearing nise-cancelling headphnes (降噪耳机) t blck ut distractins has becme increasingly cmmn, especially amng yung peple. Hwever, recent studies suggest that the widespread use f these headphnes has led t a significant rise in hearing issues. Upn further investigatin, it was revealed that the prblem is nt actually related t the ears but rather results frm the brain.
This cnditin, knwn as Auditry Prcessing Disrder (APD), ccurs when the brain has difficulty in prcessing sunds r wrds, distinguishing them frm backgrund nise, which makes it difficult fr individuals t engage in cnversatins in scial situatins r clearly hear instructins at wrk r schl. While APD has histrically been linked t childhd brain injury, ear infectins, r genetic factrs, experts nw suggest that the rise in nise-cancelling headphnes may be cntributing t the cnditin.
Althugh nise-cancelling headphnes can be useful in prtecting peple frm lud nises, experts believe they may untrain the brain’s ability t naturally blck ut backgrund nise. Claire Bentn frm the British Academy f Audilgy explained that by blcking everyday sunds like train nise r traffic, the brain might “frget” hw t filter ut distractins. It’s similar t relying t ften n a crutch (拐杖) — just as leg muscles weaken frm lack f use, cnstant use f nise-cancelling headphnes may create an artificial envirnment, where the brain n lnger practices filtering ut distractins, making it harder t functin naturally.
“Thse cmplex, high-level listening skills in yur brain dn’t fully develp until yur late teens. If yu have nly been wearing nise-cancelling headphnes during this crucial perid, yu may be slightly delaying yur ability t prcess speech and nise,” explained Claire Bentn. “Therefre, using them in mderatin and ccasinally expsing yurself t natural envirnments can help maintain the brain’s auditry prcessing abilities. The key lies in balance — prtecting yur hearing frm harmful nises while still giving yur brain pprtunities t exercise its natural filtering abilities.”
32.What d recent studies find abut nise-cancelling headphnes?
A.They are ppular amng yung peple.
B.They can lead t serius hearing damage.
C.They are mre harmful than regular headphnes.
D.They can weaken the brain’s ability t prcess sund.
33.Hw d peple with APD typically behave?
A.They becme intlerant f lud nises.
B.They cnstantly hear sunds in their ears.
C.They get easily distracted by backgrund nises.
D.They struggle t distinguish sunds in nisy envirnments.
34.Why des the authr mentin “crutch” in paragraph 3?
A.T stress the risks f verusing nise-cancelling headphnes.
B.T shw the necessity f blcking ut lud nises in daily life.
C.T state the reasns fr inventing nise-cancelling headphnes.
D.T explain the wrking principle f nise-cancelling headphnes.
35.What des Claire Bentn want t tell us in the last paragraph?
A.High-level listening skills are crucial fr persnal grwth.
      B.Nise-cancelling headphnes bring lng-lasting threat t peple.
      C.We shuld avid relying t much n nise-cancelling headphnes.
D.Natural backgrund nise has a negative impact n brain develpment.

D Actins Speak Luder than Wrds?
Our sciety is fast paced. We are all rushing frm ne place t the next, blwing ur hrn at slw drivers wh may be singing sngs in the car with their children r pinting ut sme interesting sights. We dn't have time fr that silliness tday. But we try t say t urselves that we will make time fr fun tmrrw. It is time t take a few deep breaths and think abut ur actins and ur wrds. 36
Have yu ever really thught abut the saying “Actins speak luder than wrds”? Think abut it nw. If yu say ne thing and act in an ppsite way, will the wrds be ignred and just the actins remembered? 38 What abut that saying? True? Yes! Wrds carry a lt f weight and will be remembered fr years especially when they are written dwn. Mean wrds can hurt fr that mment and fr a lifetime. I am sure that each f us remembers a time when a friend made an unkind cmment. 39 Let’s nt be a member f that “club”. When was the last time that yu hid a lve nte in a lunch bx r in yur mate’s cat pcket? If yu want t see a bright smile, that will d it! The pwer f this written nte will be remembered fr many days, even years.
“I can live fr tw mnths n a gd cmpliment(夸奖)”, said Mark Twain. Children grw strnger when they feel appreciated and understd. 40 A perfect way t turn a bad day arund is t praise yur child. “I nticed that yur hair lked very nice tday.” “Did yu hang yur cat up all by yurself?” It is amazing hw thse few wrds can change a child's utlk... almst immediately. Dn’t stp there... One f my sisters ended a phne cnversatin with three wrds -“I lve yu”! By, that put a spring in my step! Mark Twain is right. I still feel the psitive effect f thse three little but very pwerful wrds.
A.The pen is mre pwerful than the swrd.
B.Is it really reasnable t d smething like that?
C.D they display the attitude that we want t cnvey?
D.It is imprtant t have yur wrds match yur actins.
E.Behavir is a mirrr in which everyne shws his image.
F.Thse wrds did lasting damage t yu, the relatinship r bth.
G.Dn’t be afraid t shwer yur child with encuraging wrds all day lng.
