Scientists in Germany have discvered a sil bacterium which can break dwn plyurethane, a plastic that pllutes landfills and ceans. The bacterium, named Pseudmnas putida, was fund in a plastic-waste-rich area, which ffers a hpe fr addressing the glbal plastic crisis.
Plyurethane is widely used in everyday items like furniture, packaging and etc. In 2015 alne, it accunted fr 3.5 millin tns f Eurpe’s plastic waste. Recycling this material is challenging because it des nt melt when heated, requiring extreme energy cnsumptin. As a result, mst plyurethane prducts are dumped int landfills, where they slwly break dwn and release pisnus chemicals int the sil and air.
The breakthrugh lies in the bacterium’s ability t prduce enzymes( 酶 )that naturally break dwn plyurethane. Published in the jurnal Frntiers in Micrbilgy, the study highlights hw these enzymes weaken the plastic’s structure, allwing it t break dwn in the envirnment. Dr. Hermann Heipieper, a c-authr f the study, described the discvery as “an imprtant step” tward reusing plastics previusly cnsidered nn-recyclable.
The research is part f a Eurpean Unin prgram that seeks t find useful micrrganisms. The gal is t identify living things that can help turn il-based plastics int substances(物 质 ) that can be brken dwn bilgically. Similar experiments have been carried ut in the past. In 2011, Yale University students discvered a fungus(真菌)that culd feed n plyurethane plastic even in a place withut air, like at the bttm f a landfill. Since then, scientists arund the wrld have identified ther kinds f fungi that can break dwn plyurethane.
While prmising, scientists warn against rushing t use the bacteria in ecsystems. Envirnmental expert Duglas Rader advises thrugh research n hw these tiny helpers affect sea creatures. With ver 8 millin tns f plastic entering ceans every year, testing it carefully and cautiusly is very necessary. As half f glbal plastic prductin is single-use, slutins like this bacteria culd be a game-changer fr ur fight against pllutin—if handled respnsibly.
      28. Why is recycling plyurethane particularly challenging?
      A. It requires least energy t prcess. B. It cannt be melted at high temperatures.
      C. It is rarely used in everyday prducts. D. It releases pisnus chemicals when melted.
      29. The term "breakthrugh" refers t the bacterium’s ability t .
      A. survive in xygen-free envirnments. B. replace fungi in breaking dwn plyurethane.
      C. change plastics int reusable materials. D. prduce enzymes breaking dwn plyurethane. 30. What is imprtant befre applying the bacterium widely?
      A. Reducing glbal plastic prductin by half.
      B. Studying its ptential impact n sea creatures.
      C. Increasing the use f single-use plastics temprarily.
      D. Develping strnger enzymes thrugh genetic engineering.
      31. What is the mst apprpriate title fr the article?
      A. The Challenges f Recycling Plyurethane in Eurpe
      B. A Sil Bacterium Offers Hpe in Handling Plastic Pllutin

After mre than 30 years’ wrk with the yuth, ne f the cmmn questins I get asked is hw kids have changed ver the years. My shrt answer is, kids haven’t changed. The wrld arund them has.
Mdern children have nt becme a new, advanced species. They grw up at the same rate as befre, fllwing the same steps f change and grwth and meet with the same basic prblems that their parents did: cnfusin abut the wrld; bad decisins; a lack f self-cnfidence; peer pressure; cmplete curisity abut the ppsite gender(性别) while nt fully understanding their wn bdies; behaving like adults in ne setting while seeming childish in anther.
But the wrld arund them has changed. The difference is available t them thrugh phnes and laptps and streaming services, what is available n scial media, and attractive ffers and evil threats.
Think hw the yunger yu wuld have reacted t such a wrld. Thirteen-year-ld me wuld have readily sught ut answers t my cnfusin, even imprper answers, falling victim t temptatins(诱惑) , bullying, and scams(诈骗). Meanwhile, I wuld’ve felt ashamed, depressed, and pleased.
Yu wuld have t g t great lengths t blck ut the wrld fr yur children. One family wuldn’t allw their kids t have ty guns and tried t hide the cncept f guns frm them. The next thing yu knw, their five-year-ld is running arund with his frefinger and thumb aiming at things and shuting, “Bang, bang!” —He learned that while interacting with ther children. Unless yu cver yur child’s eyes and hide them in yur clset, they are ging t encunter and be influenced by the wrld in sme way.
It’s better t set limits while allwing an age-apprpriate increase in wrldly interactin. Mdern parenting requires cnversatin abut temptatin, self-image, and peer pressure such as marketing telling yur child they’re nt gd enugh. Parenting nw requires active and gradual cnstructin f yur child’s self-respect. Mdern parenting actually requires the same understanding that past parents needed: knwing what’s ut there.
Anther way t think f it is, kids haven’t really changed. But parents must.
      32. Accrding t the authr, why have children "nt changed" ver the years?
      A. Parents nw have stricter rules. B. Their develpment remains the same.
      C. They lack access t mdern technlgy. D. They are less curius abut the wrld nw.
      33. What d mdern children and their parents share during grwth?
      A. Cnfusin abut technlgy. B. Cmplete understanding f their wn bdies.
      C. Expsure t scial media threats. D. Struggles with self-cnfidence and peer pressure.
      34. What des the example f the five-year-ld shuting "Bang, bang!" illustrate?
      A. Children like ty guns by nature.
      B. Peer pressure nly exists in mdern scieties.
      C. Parents can’t fully prtect children frm utside influences.
      D. Kids can’t avid the utside wrld despite parental effrts.
      35. What des the authr recmmend fr mdern parenting?
      A. Cmpletely keep children away frm technlgy.
      B. Allwing unlimited access t wrldly interactins.
      C. Ignring cnversatin abut self-respect until they grw up.
      D. Setting limits while increasing wrldly interactin prperly.

39 Fr ne, it puts less strain n the bdy thanks t its lwer intensity, allwing yu t recver mre quickly and thus squeeze mre wrkuts int yur week. That 2024 review als fund that the mre wrkuts yu d a week, the greater the bst t yur aerbic capacity.
LISS can als aid recvery frm intense wrkuts, when ur bdies break dwn glucse(葡萄糖) fr energy, prducing lactic acid in the prcess. This then separates int lactate and prtns(乳酸和质子).As LISS prmtes blds flw t skeletal muscles, it helps flush away these waste prducts, speeding up recvery. 40
As fr me, I am ging t find the time t make LISS a pririty. A lng walk in the park desn’t sund t bad, even n a rest day.
      A.Such is the fact.
      B. But maybe that isn’t always the case.
      C. But that isn’t brne ut by the research.
      D. Hwever, LISS des have sme advantages.
      E. At this intensity, yur bdy is burning mstly fat fr energy.
      F. S it can be beneficial t end an intense wrkut with a little LISS.
      G. S, if yu nly have the energy fr limited high-intensity sessins , yu may chse fr the latter.
