一、阅读理解★ #ChefsChallenge!Love cooking? Join famous chefs with this online challenge—cook, have fun and share your best healthy recipes! When it comes to food, it’s difficult to match East Asia & Pacific in terms of variety and tastiness. From wontons to dumplings, from spicy fish to noodle soups, East Asia & Pacific’s amazing food culture is a central part of life for millions of people and indeed tourists from across the world. However, changes in diet and lifestyle in recent years have sadly destroyed traditional food cultures, and the health of millions of people. Cheap “fast food” and unhealthy snacks that are high in sugar, salt and fat are now all too common but offer little nutrition.★A new challengeToday, there are more than 25 million of malnourished children living in the region, but the picture is changing. While the number of stunted (发育不良) children is slowly falling in many countries, overweight and obesity are growing, and at a much faster rate.In many countries, three forms of malnutrition—undernutrition, hidden hunger and overweight-co-exist. A family may have an overweight mother and a stunted child. Or a child may be both stunted or too short and overweight. Unhealthy diets are a major cause of all forms of malnutrition.★Join us!One way to slow this tide is to reconnect families and young people with food. That’s why chefs from across the region are taking part in the #ChefsChallenge, asking you to show off your cooking skills. Get involved today by sharing your recipes with videos, photos or any other creative ways on social media using #ChefsChallenge and tagging UNICEF East Asia Pacific on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook.1What has badly affected the traditional food culture in East Asia & Pacific?A. Western cooks’ arriving.B. People’s turning to unhealthy food.C. Tourists’ bringing new recipes.D. Overweight children’s growing in number.2What can we infer about “a malnourished child”?A. He is in a poor state of health.B. He is shorter than other kids.C. He has an overweight parent.D. He prefers eating at home.3What is the purpose of “#ChefsChallenge”?A. To introduce excellent Asian cooks online.B. To help ordinary people challenge professional cooks.C. To reconnect people with tasty and nutritious food.D. To encourage family and friends to get together online. As we all know, trees are always stationary: they stay more or less where you plant them, and no one worries about finding a tree wandering around a park or back yard. However, there is one special exception, some say: the so-called walking palm tree(棕榈) was found in the rainforests of Central and South America. Many people believe it can really walk around. This is because of its unusual root system; while most trees have one trunk, the palm breaks into many smaller roots a few feet off the ground, giving it the appearance of many little legs. The amazing walking ability of the palm tree has always been told by rainforest guides to tourists for years, and appears in many sources of documents as an amazing plant adaptation. As journalist Sherry Seethaler writes in her book Curious Folks Ask 2: "Screen writers searching for the perfect B-movie(小成本电影)plant hero could take inspiration from the walking palm. The tree slowly walks from shade to sunlight by growing new roots toward the light."A tree that walks in search of the sun is a fascinating, strange story. And it's not true, either; the tree is real enough, but it doesn't walk. It sits where it began to grow, not moving except under the force of wind or an axe.Biologist Gerardo Avalos is one of the world's top experts on the Socratea exorrhiza. His analysis of the plant and its roots shows that the walking tree can't walk because its roots don't move. A few roots on one side or another may die off, but the trunk itself remains, well, rooted to the spot."My paper proves that the belief of the walking palm is just a myth," Avalos said. "Thinking that a palm tree could actually track the sunlight changes by moving slowly over the forest floor is a myth that tourist guides find amusing to tell visitors to the rainforest.”4What does the underlined word "stationary" mean in Paragraph 1?A.Not standing. B.Not moving. C.Not growing. D.Not dying.5Why do people think Socratea exorrhiza can walk around?A.It has no roots underground. B.It appears to have several trunks.C.It grows a few feet off the ground. D.It appears to have many little legs.6What can we learn about the palm tree from the passage?A.It wanders around the rainforest at night.B.It grows in Central and North America.C.It is a popular attraction among visitors.D.It grows well in the shade of the rainforests.7What does biologist Gerardo Avalos believe?A.The palm tree cannot actually walk at all.B.The palm tree can move its roots.C.The palm tree cannot track the sunlight.D.The palm tree cannot keep its trunk growing. If you’ve ever been annoyed by the sound of someone eating, especially as they noisily slurp(出声地吃) noodles, don’t worry, you’re not alone.A company has recently designed a fork that connects to an app on your smartphone, which will then play noise cancelling sounds if you happen to slurp your noodles too loudly. The fork was designed with a microphone in its handle that is trained to recognize the sound of slurping. The microphone will then send a signal to the phone app, setting off the noise cancelling sounds. The company that designed the fork, called Otohiko fork, was inspired by what is called “noodle harassment” by social medians, which is running wild in Japan.“The Japanese, who generally dislike noisy eating, consider it proper and even preferable to suck up one’s noodles with a loud slurping sound.”Unfortunately for visitors, however, such enthusiastic slurping tends to grate on their nerves, which is what leads to the creation of the phrase “noodle harassment” in the first place. The company behind the fork, Nissin, is the very same company that invented Cup Noodles, who brought instant noodles to the world nearly 70 years ago, so they are definitely worried about whether or not foreigners are put off by the sound of slurping noodles. The fork is being sold for a good $130, but those bothered enough by noodles slurpers will likely find it well worth the money.Nissin is only planning a limited run of 5,000 forks for the time being, which can now be pre-ordered only through their website. The company is planning to begin releasing them just in time for the holidays. Of course, it still remains to be seen if the fork can be programmed to drown out the sound of loud chewers, which is probably of greater concern to sensitive western friends.8From the passage we can know that ______.A.a microphone in the Otohiko fork’s handle is designed to cancel the slurping soundB.all the Japanese will be encouraged to use the Otohiko fork.C.the Otohiko fork is not available now in real shopsD.the Otohiko fork will definitely silence the sound of loud chewers9What does the underlined word “harassment” mean?A.Disturbance B.Preference C.Cancellation D.Division10The new fork will be the most helpful for ______.A.western visitors to Japan B.fans of Japanese noodlesC.the spread of Japanese culture D.the reform of Japanese food11What is the main purpose of the passage?A.It tells good news to western visitors.B.It introduces a noise cancelling fork.C.It describes a famous Japanese noodle company.D.It explains a phrase “noodle harassment”.New App Helps People Remember Faces    Large gatherings such as weddings and conferences can be socially overwhelming. Pressure to learn people's names only adds to the stress. A new facial-recognition app could come to the rescue, but privacy(隐私) experts recommend using it with caution.        The app, called SocialRecall, connects names with faces through smartphone cameras and facial recognition, potentially avoiding the need for formal introductions. "It breaks down these social barriers we all have when meeting somebody," says Barry Sandrew, who created the app and tested it at an event attended by about 1,000 people.        After receiving an invitation to download SocialRecall from an event organizer, the user is asked to take two selfies and sign in through social media. At the event, the app is active within a previously defined(限定的) geographical area. When a user points his or her phone camera at an attendee's face, the app identifies(识别) the individual, displays the person's name, and links to his or her social media profile(资料). To protect privacy, it recognizes only those who have agreed to participate. And the app’s creators say it automatically deletes users' data after an event.    Ann Cavoukian, a privacy expert who runs the Privacy by Design Center of Excellence praises the app’s creators for these protective measures. She cautions, however, that when people choose to share their personal information with the app, they should know that "there may be unintended consequences down the road with that information being used in another context that might come back to bite you."       The start-up has also developed a version of the app for individuals who suffer from prosopagnosia, or "face blindness," a condition that prevents people from recognizing individuals they have met. To use this app, a person first acquires an image of someone's face, from either the smartphone's camera or a photograph, and then tags it with a name. When the camera spots that same face in real life, the previously entered information is displayed. The collected data are stored only on a user's phone, according to the team behind the app.12SocialRecall is used to ________.A. take photos  B. identify people C. organize events D. make friends13Paragraph 3 is mainly about ________.A. how the app works B. how the app was createdC. what makes the app popular D. what people can do with the app14SocialRecall helps people with prosopagnosia by ________.A. giving names to the photos kept in their smartphonesB. collecting information previously entered in the phoneC. providing the information of a person when they first meetD. showing the person’s information when it spots a stored face15What can we learn about SocialRecall from the passage?A. It may put people’s privacy at risk.B. It has caused unintended consequences.C. It can prevent some communication disorders.D. It is praised by users for its protective measures.二、七选五16阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Improve Your RelationshipsHaving stable and positive relationships in your life can make you happier and more fulfilled. But no matter how easily I acted at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator's (旁白)part to the play, and asked me to change roles. Her word, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.I didn't tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my pain. "From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden. ”“But I like dandelions, ” I protested. "All flowers are beautiful -even dandelions. "My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn't it?" She asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. “And that is true of people too," she added. "Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.
