The debate abut spanking(打屁股)children has been nging fr many years, but a crucial questin ften gets verlked: des it actually wrk? In the immediate mment, a swift slap n the buttcks r hand can crrect misbehavir. Hwever, what abut its lng-term effects? Culd spanking leave invisible, lasting scars n children?
At a recent cnference, scilgist Murray Straus frm the University f New Hampshire presented research suggesting that physical punishment lwers IQ. He has been studying this tpic since 1969 and fund that children wh were physically punished scred up t five pints lwer n IQ tests cmpared t thse wh weren’t. The mre they were spanked, the lwer their IQ. This effect was bserved nt nly in individual children but acrss entire cuntries. Amng 32 cuntries Straus studied, in thse where spanking was accepted, the average IQ f the survey ppulatin was lwer than in natins where spanking was rare, the researcher says.
In the United States, Straus and his clleague Mallie Paschall studied 1,510 children and fund that three- quarters had experienced sme frm f physical punishment in the past tw weeks. Researchers measured the children’s IQ initially and again fur years later. Thse wh hadn’t been spanked scred significantly better n intelligence and achievement tests. Amng the 2-t-4-year-lds, the difference in IQ was five pints; amng the lder kids, there was a 2.8-pint gap. This assciatin remained even after cnsidering factrs like parental educatin and ccupatin.
Still, it’s nt clear if spanking causes lwer cgnitive ability r if lwer cgnitive ability might smehw lead t mre spanking. “It culd be that lwer IQ causes parents t get annyed and hit mre,” Straus says, althugh he ntes that a recent Duke University study f lw-incme families fund that tddlers’ lw mental ability did nt predict an increase in spanking. The study did find, hwever, that kids wh were spanked at age 1 displayed mre aggressive behavir by age 2, and scred lwer n cgnitive develpment tests by age 3. “Yes, there’s still smething t be dne.” says Straus, “The prblem is, when the parent des that, it seems t have harmful results t cgnitive ability in the lng term.”
While spanking may seem like the nly way t discipline sme children in the shrt term, the lng-term cst culd be mre truble. The harmful effects f spanking n cgnitive ability are cncerning. “Yes, there’s still smething t be dne,” says Straus. “The prblem is, when parents d it, it seems t have disastrus effects n cgnitive ability ver time.”
      32. What are the findings f Straus’ study?
      A. The cuntries with rare spanking have higher average IQ.
      B. Children’s IQ is clsely related t parental educatin and ccupatin.
      C. Older children have a lt higher scres in intelligence tests.
      D. The mre physical punishment the children get, the higher IQ they have.
      33. What can learn frm Duke University’s study?
      A. Cgnitive ability has a direct relatinship with the times f spanking.
      B. Spanked kids are likely t be aggressive and have lwer cgnitive ability.
      C. Lw-incme families tend t spank children mre frequently.
      D. Parents like spanking children with lwer IQ and cgnitive ability.
      34. Which f the fllwing can best describe the writer’s attitude t spanking?
      A. Disapprving. B. Unclear. C. Objective D. Favrable.
      35. What is the passage mainly abut?
      A. A research n whether spanking has a gd effect.
      B. A debate ver spanking’s lng-term impact.
      C. A relatinship between children’s IQ and spanking.
      D. A fact that spanking wrks in the shrt run.
