Meanwhile, the friend getting the call places a much higher value n the surprise scial interactin. “Peple are fundamentally scial beings and enjy bnding with thers,” explains lead authr Peggy Liu, PhD, frm the University f Pittsburgh, in a media release. Researchers cnducted several experiments invlving ver 5,900 peple t lk at what factrs play int the amunt f appreciatin smene feels when thers cntact them.
In ne experiment, researchers asked half f the participants t remember the last time they cntacted smene in their scial circle after nt speaking with them fr a really lng time. The rest f the grup tk the ppsite apprach, remembering when a lng-lst friend reached them by phne.
The tw grups then had t rate n a seven-pint scale (1 meaning “nt at all” and 7 meaning “t a great extent”) hw much the persn receiving this cmmunicatin appreciated, r felt grateful, r pleased abut the message. Fr peple making the call, this meant guessing hw much their friend enjyed hearing frm them. Fr the peple receiving the call, they simply had t rate hw much they appreciated hearing frm a lng-lst pal. Results shwcase the peple reaching their friend significantly underrated their friend’s appreciatin when the tw grups were cmpared.
“I smetimes hesitate befre cntacting peple in my scial circle fr a variety f reasns. When that happens, I think abut these research findings and remind myself that ther peple may als want t reach me and hesitate fr the same reasns,” Liu cncludes. “I then tell myself that I wuld appreciate it s much if they reached me and that there is n reasn t think they wuld nt similarly appreciate my reaching them.”

Cancer is a leading cause f death wrldwide, accunting fr nearly 10 millin deaths in 2020. Many frms f cancers culd be cured if discvered early and treated prperly. But identifying it is quite an effrt. Nw a new study may ffer an apprach.
Researchers in France recently fund that insects, including ants, have a pwerful sense f smell and can quickly learn t find ut cancerus cells (细胞). The researchers experimented with 36 ants f the species Frmica fusca. They first trained the ants by placing a sugar slutin near the cancerus cells. Half f the ants were taught t recgnize ne type f cancer, and the rest were taught anther. Then the ants were put near the healthy cells and the cancerus cells. It turned ut that when the sugar slutin was taken away, the ants culd still find ut the cancerus cells. In the test, the ants mved twards the cancerus cells they learned t discver, even if they had t chse between different cancer varieties.
This isn’t the first time that animals’ sense f smell has been used t identify cancerus cells. Earlier studies have suggested that dgs are gd at smelling ut cancerus cells. “Ants equal dgs in terms f smelling abilities,” the researchers wrte. “In sme regards, ants are better than dgs because they can learn extremely fast — less than 30 minutes fr mst ants — with a lw-cst methd that can be achieved by anyne after a cuple f days f training, while training a dg t prperly smell ut cancerus cells requires several mnths t a year and it als csts much.”
Mre clinical (临床的) tests must be carried ut befre they culd be used in clinical settings like hspitals. The researchers’ next step will be t further study whether ants culd make themselves useful in ther real-wrld situatins where dgs are nw used. They believe that the methd culd pssibly be adapted t ther challenging tasks.
      12. What can we learn abut the ants in the experiment?
      A. They were used fr curing cancer.
      B. They fed mainly n cancerus cells.
      C. They preferred healthy cells t cancerus cells.
      D. They culd tell different cancerus cell varieties apart.
      13. Hw are ants better than dgs accrding t the researchers?
      A. Ants have a strnger sense f smell.B. Ants have mre crrect results.
      C. Ants are much mre cst-effective.D. Ants can be used fr lnger perids.
      14. What will the researchers d next?
      A. Explre ther pssible uses f ants.
      B. Experiment with ther species f ants.
      C. Use ants instead f dgs in real-wrld situatins.
      D. Prmte the use f ants in hspitals arund the wrld.
      15. What is the text mainly abut?
