Cnstructin wrkers recently fund the ruins f a large pyramid beside a highway in Mexic. After discvering the site, researchers cllected many ancient bjects that will be studied in their labratries ver the cming mnths. The structure was fund in June 2024 during highway expansin wrk in Hidalg, central Mexic. The discvery happened by chance as wrkers were adding a third lane t the federal highway, shwing hw ancient structures can still be fund during mdern cnstructin prjects.
Scientists frm Mexic’s Natinal Institute f Anthrplgy and Histry went t study the site. They used drnes t take pictures and cllected 155 items, including pieces f pttery, stne tls, and shells. T prtect the ld building, they built a large wall arund the pyramid, which is 43 meters lng and 11.7 meters high.
The pyramid is part f an ld settlement called San Miguel, built between 650-1519 CE. The area was ruled by the “Metzca lrdship,” which influenced the regin until the 1500s. Peple have lived in this regin fr a very lng time, with the ldest settlements dating back at least 14,000 years. This shws that many different grups f peple have lived here ver thusands f years.
Scientists keep finding hidden ancient buildings in Mexic and ther parts f the Americas. Many discveries are made using LiDAR, a technlgy that uses laser light t see things cncealed under plants and trees. This tl helps archaelgists (考古学家) find ld structures that they culdn’t see just by lking at the grund.
Last year, researchers used LiDAR t find an 18-kilmeter rad that cnnected ancient Maya cities ver 1,200 years ag. In Guatemala, they als discvered a previusly unknwn Maya civilizatin with 964 settlements cnnected by 177 kilmeters f ancient rads. These findings shw that the Americas had cmplex and thriving scieties lng befre Eurpean settlers arrived. The discveries remind us hw advanced these ancient civilizatins were, thugh their develpment was later interrupted by clnizatin. Each new discvery helps build a mre cmplete picture f these remarkable ancient scieties.
24.What actin did scientists take first after discvering the site?
A.They restred the pyramid.B.They cntacted lcal authrities.
C.They remved all artifacts.D.They phtgraphed the site.

Tennis is a ppular sprt with grwing impact n trends, frm clthing t mvies. Nw, it’s even influencing furniture design. Belgium ec-designer Mathilde Wittck is creating furniture frm discarded tennis balls. She chse t repurpse tennis balls due t their shrt lifespan. “It takes arund 24 different manufacturing steps t prduce a tennis ball, which is arund five days. Then it has such a shrt lifespan,” Wittck tld CNN. She aims t keep the 300 millin tennis balls prduced annually ut f landfills.
Wittck graduated in 2021 frm Central Saint Martins with degrees in prduct design and natural design. Her degree prject, Sundbunce, was an acustic (隔音的) material made frm recycled tennis balls, inspired by her sensitivity t nise. “Being very sensitive t nise, the tennis ball presented an pprtunity t address this issue,” she said. “And, with nise pllutin an ever-increasing prblem, its effects are still largely unknwn, but it is evident that it negatively impacts physical and mental health s creating slutins fr this is key.”
Creating furniture frm tennis balls is challenging. Wittck cuts each ball by hand alng the white line, remves the brand lg, and creates frames with hles where the taken-apart balls fit. The result is a padded (衬垫) surface excellent fr sund reductin. It takes her three t fur weeks t cmplete a chaise, which she sells fr $2,900. Each ball is dyed by hand t match the client’s space.
The tennis balls Wittck uses are dnated frm tennis clubs. She nw wrks with the Federatin f Wallnia in Brussels, wh ffered her their entire stck f 100,000 balls. This will last fr a while as Wittck can nly use arund 1,800 a week.
The life f these tennis balls desn’t end as furniture. When the sft cvering wears away r the rubber breaks dwn, the furniture pieces can be taken apart and recycled int ther useful bjects like playgrund mats. Being able t keep reusing materials is key t ec-design. Wittck’s wrk demnstrates hw discarded items can be transfrmed int functinal, sustainable prducts.
28.What was Sundbunce inspired by?
A.Wittck’s lve fr tennis.B.Wittck’s design degrees.
C.Wittck’s sensitivity t nise.D.Wittck’s wish t recycle balls.
29.Hw des Wittck make the furniture sund-reducing?
A.By using special machines.B.By creating padded surfaces.
C.By adding extra cverings.D.By chsing thick materials.
30.Why des the authr mentin the Federatin f Wallnia?
A.T shw Wittck’s scial skills.B.T shw the large demand fr balls.
C.T shw the supprt fr Wittck’s wrk.D.T shw the ppularity f Wittck’s furniture.
31.What des the authr think f Wittck’s wrk?
A.It’s innvative.B.It’s wasteful.C.It’s rdinary.D.It’s expensive.

Many f the astrnauts ging up t space are amng the smartest peple n the planet. Hwever, a new NASA study has fund a surprising effect f space travel — it may actually slw dwn the human brain.
Cntrary t what yu might expect, researchers discvered that while space travelers rbit the Earth, they experience sme temprary mental slwdwns, including prcessing infrmatin slwer and difficulties with attentin and memry.
Luckily, the study als finds spending mnths in space desn’t permanently scramble (打乱) an astrnaut’s cgnitive (认知的) abilities. Their verall brain perfrmance remains remarkably resilient (有适应力的).
The study examined 25 prfessinal astrnauts wh spent an average f six mnths abard the Internatinal Space Statin. Scientists tracked their cgnitive perfrmance thrugh a series f rigrus (谨慎的) tests designed t measure everything frm prcessing speed t memry and attentin. “We shw that there is n evidence f any significant cgnitive impairment r neurdegenerative decline in astrnauts spending six mnths n the ISS,” explains Dr. Sheena Dev, the study’s lead researcher, in a media release.
S what exactly changed? Think f it like yur brain running in “lw pwer mde”. Astrnauts cmpleted tasks just as accurately as they wuld n Earth, but they tk slightly lnger t prcess infrmatin. Prcessing speed, wrking memry, and attentin were the mst affected cgnitive fields — similar t hw yu might feel after a stressful day withut enugh sleep. The mst interesting but unusual finding is hw quickly the brain adapts. Sme perfrmance changes, like slwer attentin spans, were nly nticeable early in the missin. Others, like reduced prcessing speed, tk a bit lnger t return t nrmal after the astrnauts returned t Earth.
These insights are mre than just scientific curisity. As humanity lks tward ambitius missins t the Mn and Mars, understanding hw the human brain respnds t extreme envirnments becmes crucial. This research prvides a baseline fr future space explrers, helping missin planners predict and reduce ptential cgnitive challenges.
32.Hw may astrnauts perfrm during space travel?
A.They take lnger t respnd t the tasks.B.They cmplete tasks as quickly as n earth.
C.Their cgnitive abilities are damaged heavily.D.They spend years recvering their physical health
33.What des the underlined wrd “impairment” in paragraph 4 prbably mean?
A.Imprvement.B.Damage.C.Develpment.D.Change.
34.What can we learn frm the passage?
A.Astrnauts’ cgnitive abilities remain stable wherever they are.
B.Astrnauts’ perfrmance in space is much wrse than that n Earth.
C.Astrnauts’ attentin spans were always slwer in the space.
D.Astrnauts’ brain perfrmance can return t nrmal later
35.What des the last paragraph mainly abut?
A.The later plans fr space missins.B.The develpment f cgnitive study.
C.The significance f the study.D.The future f space explratin.

When my husband asked me what I wanted fr the cming festival, I replied, “The Famus Five series.” His first respnse was, “What’s that?” I had t explain. He knew there was lss and sadness assciated with mving s many times, and that I’d lst sme material things alng the way. What I hadn’t explained quite yet was my desire t cnnect with my past thrugh the bks I’d enjyed as a child.
During ur elementary schl years in Austria, I wuld frequent the British bkshp in Vienna. During thse visits, I acquired all twenty-ne bks in the Famus Five series by the British authr Enid Blytn. I enjyed reading abut the adventures f the “Five”, which included siblings (兄妹)Julian, Dick, and Anne as well as their cusin Gergina and her dg Timmy. The stries feature funny plts centering n catching bad peple—quite extrardinary, cnsidering the heres were mere teenagers! The bks were my passprts t adventures I’d never experienced in my wn life.
Unfrtunately, my family had t mve t the United States quite abruptly due t a health emergency. My parents had t make difficult decisins abut what t bring t America. Since bks were heavy, my parents were unable t bring mst f my bks with them, including the Famus Five series. I was heartbrken!
Fast frward t seven years int my marriage, sme seventeen years after I’d left my treasured Famus Five series behind, I decided I wanted t acquire my bks fr a hliday. I’d been searching the Internet fr the series but gt disappinted, because n American bk publishers r websites had the bks. We culd have bught them n a freign website, but we were nervus abut using ur credit card that way.
The festival eventually arrived and my husband, daughter, and I sat arund the table. We traditinally pened ne present and each f us picked a gift. My daughter pened hers first, and then my husband.
