Sme snakes are well-knwn fr injecting prey with pisnus liquid frm their teeth. What’s less well knwn is that they prduce pisnus stuff at the ther end f their bdies, t. Lcated at the base f the tail are rgans that generate smelly secretins(分泌物). The pint f these rgans has lng been a mystery, but new research suggests they culd stem frm a time when snakes needed t prtect themselves frm a vicius enemy: the humble ant.
Scientists have knwn since at least the 1960s that sme tail secretins are bug-repellent. Yet until nw it has been unclear why all snake species, even thse that seemingly never interact with ants, prduce the secretin.
T get t the bttm f the issue, Paul Weldn f the Bilgy Institute in Virginia and Rbert Vander Meer f the Centre fr Agricultural Entmlgy in Flrida cllected secretins frm snakes n all family branches. The team then set up a small rm with red fire ants that make aggressive attacks n invaders. The team allwed the smell f the snake secretins t stay in the rm, t see if it wuld put the ants ff. But they entered the rm with n fear.
Drs Weldn and Vander Meer next questined whether directly interacting with the secretins wuld have an effect. They presented the ants with bth a drplet f rdinary water and a drplet f mixture f water and snake secretin. Thugh the ants readily drank frm the rdinary water drplets, they rarely even apprached the mixture.
The researchers interpret these findings t mean that tail secretins frm snakes prbably evlved fr insect defence lng ag. They prpse that the secretin appeared in the earliest snakes. It wuld allw them t respnd t angry ants defending themselves frm attack r ants lking fr their next meal.
N snakes wanted t make themselves smelly, but the enemies encuraged the rise f the adaptatin. When yu have n limbs, yu might as well make bth ends cunt.
      32. Why did the snake give ff unpleasant smell frm their tail?
      A. T avid being stuck.B. T kill and t feed themselves.
      C. T smell and lcate themselves.D. T prevent themselves frm being hurt.
      33. What des the wrd underlined in paragraph 2 mst prbably mean?
      A. unfriendly t insects.B. appealing t insects.

      34. Hw did the researchers d their experiment?
      A. By analysing the data.B. By making cmparisns.
      C. By cntrlling the reactin.D. By measuring chemical changes.
      35. Hw can we understand the last sentence in the last paragraph?
      A. The adaptatin was useless because snakes faced threats.
      B. Smelly secretins were mainly used t attract prey nt fr defence.
      C. Snakes develped defensive features t survive despite imperfectin.
      D. Only pisnus snakes needed adaptatins t escape frm predatrs.
D 33. A 34. B 35. C
根据文章第一段“What’s less well knwn is that they prduce pisnus stuff at the ther end f their bdies, t. Lcated at the base f the tail are rgans that generate smelly secretins(分泌物). The pint f these rgans has lng been a mystery, but new research suggests they culd stem frm a time when snakes needed t prtect themselves frm a vicius enemy: the humble ant.(鲜为人知的是,它们在身体的另一端也会产生有毒物质。 以及文章最后一段“N snakes wanted t make themselves smelly, but the enemies encuraged the rise f the adaptatin. When yu have n limbs, yu might as well make bth ends cunt.(没有蛇愿意让自己发臭,但敌人促使了这种适应性的出现。
根据文章第二段划线词后面的“Yet until nw it has been unclear why all snake species, even thse that seemingly never interact with ants, prduce the secretin.(然而,直到现在还不清楚为什么所有的蛇类,甚至那些看似从不与蚂蚁互动的蛇类,都会产生这种分泌物。)”以及第四段“Drs Weldn and Vander Meer next questined whether directly interacting with the secretins wuld have an effect. They presented the ants with bth a drplet f rdinary water and a drplet f mixture f water and snake secretin. Thugh the ants readily drank frm the rdinary water drplets, they rarely even apprached the mixture.(Weldn博士和Vander Meer博士接下来质疑直接与分泌物接触是否会产生影响。 故选A项。
根据文章第三段中的“The team then set up a small rm with red fire ants that make aggressive attacks n invaders. The team allwed the smell f the snake secretins t stay in the rm, t see if it wuld put the ants ff. But they entered the rm with n fear.(然后,研究小组在一个小房间里放置了红火蚁,这些红火蚁会对入侵者发起猛烈的攻击。 以及第四段“Drs Weldn and Vander Meer next questined whether directly interacting with the secretins wuld have an effect. They presented the ants with bth a drplet f rdinary water and a drplet f mixture f water and snake secretin. Thugh the ants readily drank frm the rdinary water drplets, they rarely even apprached the mixture.(Weldn博士和Vander Meer博士接下来质疑直接与分泌物接触是否会产生影响。
根据文章最后一段“N snakes wanted t make themselves smelly, but the enemies encuraged the rise f the adaptatin. When yu have n limbs, yu might as well make bth ends cunt.(没有蛇愿意让自己发臭,但敌人促使了这种适应性的出现。

上文“What d yu think abut ‘regifting’ — giving smene else a gift that yu received befre? Is it dishnest t pretend that yu bught the gift fr the persn yu’re giving it t?(你怎么看待“转送礼物”——把之前收到的礼物送给别人?
上文“S rather than have it add t husehld clutter r get thrwn ut, why nt regift?(所以与其让它增加家里的杂乱或被扔掉,为什么不转送呢?)” 下文“Gift-giving happens within a web f relatinships, and there are feelings t be cnsidered (“Where’s that purple scarf I knitted yu last Christmas?”).(送礼发生在错综复杂的人际关系网络之中,而且有些情感因素也需要考虑在内(比如:“我去年圣诞节给你织的那条紫色围巾去哪儿了?” 故选A。
上文“There are times when integrity might require us t infrm the riginal giver f ur intentin t regift, even if the cnversatin might be awkward.(有时候,为了保持正直,我们可能需要告诉最初送礼物的人我们打算转送,即使对话可能会很尴尬)”说明在转送礼物时,有时需要告知最初的送礼者。下文“We als hpe it shuldn’t be smething they’ll just regift again and again.(我们也希望这不会是一件他们会一再转送出去的东西)”中的“als hpe”表明这是另一个希望达成的条件。
上文“But if yu think abut it, the three gifts the Magi brught t Jesus in Matthew 2 weren’t all that practical. If I gt thse three gifts, I’d prbably keep the gld.(但如果你仔细想想,马太福音2中东方三博士带给耶稣的三件礼物并不都那么实用。
下文“In her bk Braiding Sweetgrass, Rbin Wall Kimmerer pints ut that in Indigenus and Native American cultures, the attitude tward giving is different: “Whatever we have been given is suppsed t be given away again.”(在她的书《编织甜草》中,Rbin Wall Kimmerer指出,在原住民和美洲原住民文化中,对给予的态度是不同的:“无论我们得到什么,都应该再次给予。”)”

“N, and yur mther and I are nt paying any replacement fees anymre, Jackie!” yelled Dad frm the basement.
That was the least f my wrries. The real prblem was the library’s three-strike rule: if yu lst a third bk, yu’d be banned frm checking ut any bks fr a whle mnth. I ran arund the huse, lking under the cuch, in the fridge, and behind the pian. I checked the brm clset, the fruit bwl, and the windwsills. Where was that library bk?
Dad suggested it might be in the car, Of curse! I always read in the car. “But I think Mm just left fr the grcery stre.” he added.
He was right. Mm pulled ut f the driveway at that very mment. N! N! N! “Mm, wait!” I sprinted thrugh the hallway, grabbing my cat and helmet as I went.

The afternn sun glared ff the recycling bin’s metal surface as I crazily dug thrugh ygurt cntainers and cereal bxes. Finally I fund the bk — cvered in ketchup (番茄酱). Befre I culd celebrate, a dg snatched it and ran ff. I chased it acrss the sccer field, luring (引诱) it back with my chips.
The ketchup-smeared pages stuck tgether with a sickly sweet smell that mixed with the dg’s slb ber (口水). With n time t lse, I sprinted t the library, arriving as the drkeeper was lcking the dr. “Please, I need t return this!” I begged. She let me in, and I rushed t Mrs. Linqvist, handing her the bk with relief.

      Paragraph 1
Mrs. Linqvist stared at the bk, her expressin unreadable. Slwly, she flipped thrugh the ketchup-stained pages, her eyebrws furrwing. My palms grew sweaty as I watched her flip thrugh the pages, sme stained r crumpled. The library’s quiet hum amplified my punding heart. Wuld she ntice the trn pages? I clutched the straps f my backpack, my mind racing fr excuses. Mrs. Linqvist cast a quick lk at me, her lips tightened int a thin line. The silence stretched, suffcating. “Jackie,” she finally said, her vice calm but firm, “this bk is beynd repair.” She held it up, revealing the dirty pages and dg teeth marks.
      Paragraph 2
I recalling all the effrts made, my heart sank. I had brken the library’s three-strike rule. Swallwing hard, I explained the whle situatin, frm the frantic search at hme t the chase after the dg. Mrs. Linqvist listened carefully, her expressin sftening a bit. T my surprise, she handed me a cleaning clth. “Help tidy the shelves fr the next hur,” she said with a faint smile, “we’ll cnsider this a special case, but remember, be mre careful next time.” I ndded eagerly. While wrking, I learned the value f carefulness and respnsibility. As I left the library, the sun set behind me, casting a warm glw, as if eching the light f grwth and understanding shining within me.
