If yu’ re asked t picture a successful leader, what d yu see? If yu’ re like mst peple, yu imagine smebdy wh is decisive and in cntrl. Smebdy wh seems t have little dubts abut his r her actins.
But that kind f thinking has it backward. In mre than tw decades f research int hw leaders’ decisin-making has an impact n rganizatinal success, I’ve uncvered a surprising finding: The mst effective leaders aren’t the nes wh seem t have all the answers, but thse wh questin themselves. They are, in ther wrds, ambivalent.
Ambivalent leaders aren’t decisive in the eyes f thers and are ften regarded as weak and t agreeable. But, ur research reveals a different stry. In ne study f 164 cnsulting teams in Brazil, we fund that leaders wh were ambivalent discussed with mre team members, and mre frequently, than leaders wh were less ambivalent. The penness f these leaders als inspired team members t seek mre infrmatin frm thers. At the end f the prject, custmers rated these teams higher in their perfrmance than teams led by decisive managers.
My mst recent research, f students at a university, shwed similar results. We bserved the students as they perfrmed six-mnth class prjects in teams. At the end f the prjects, team members and leaders answered survey questins abut each ther. In the survey, team members were pen t ambivalence in their leaders: The mre ambivalent these leaders seemed t be abut decisins, the mre their team members felt the leaders were really gd listeners. Ambivalent leaders, meanwhile, reprted that their team members had higher levels f curisity and creativity than leaders wh were less ambivalent.
Ambivalent leaders challenge traditinal views f what leaders lk like. But evidence shws, again and again, that their perfrmance als eclipses decisive leaders. Ambivalence is a driving frce behind critical thinking and jint decisin-making.
7. What des the study f 164 teams suggest?

B. T present a new idea abut leadership.

选项A. But the highlight is always gathering arund the dinner table. We usually have htpt-it’s s tasty!(但最令人期待的时刻总是围坐在餐桌旁的时候。我们通常会吃火锅——味道真是太棒了!)在选项E描述的回家与家人互动之后,转折强调了聚餐是家庭聚会的亮点,引出具体家庭活动(吃火锅)。故空④选A。
选项D. Hwever, what we eat isn’t the mst imprtant thing. What’s imprtant is wh we eat it with. It’s a wnderful thing t be back tgether with my family and talk f ld times.(然而,我们所吃的东西并不是最重要的。
