My family didn’t talk much abut my grandfather when I was grwing up. He had been a dctr in the British Army and served in the First Wrld War. While many families had relatives in the British Army wh fught n the frnt, it wasn’t smething yu need t talk abut with pride. After graduating frm medical schl in 1906, my grandfather wrked as a resident surgen at the Waterfrd Hspital fr 12 mnths befre jining the Ryal Army Medical Crps and starting his first tur f India.
Over the next several years,he served in Rawalpindi, Ferzepre, Multan, Rangn and Mandalay.
The First Wrld War began n July 28, 1914 and tw weeks later, my grandfather was n active service in France and Belgium. He was captured(俘获)at Landrecies n Octber 18, 1914 and was kept in prisn at Sennelager Prisner f War Camp in Germany. Fllwing his release n June 26,1915, he returned t Lndn. A mnth later he was back n active service, first with the Mediterranean Expeditinary Frce in Malta, then Gallipli and then back t France and Belgium25 where he served as the fficer cmmanding N. 44 Field Ambulance until near the war’s end in Nvember 1918.
