The planetary atmspheres in ur slar system share a bradly similar structure t ne anther, where a jet stream f pwerful winds blwing in the lwer part f the atmsphere is driven by internal temperature differences, while winds in the upper layers are mre affected by temperature differences created by the sun’s heat, which warms the daylight side f the planet but nt the ther.
Yet in Tyls’s atmsphere, it is the winds in the lwer layer that are driven by heat frm the planet’s star, travelling away frm the warm side, while the jet stream appears t be mstly in the middle layer f the atmsphere, travelling arund Tyls’s equatr in the directin f the planet’s rtatin (旋转). An upper layer f hydrgen als shws jetstream-like features, flwing arund the planet but als mving utwards int space.
What’s mre, the jet stream n Tyls is the mst pwerful ever seen, blasting at arund 70,000 kilmetres per hur acrss half the planet — duble the speed f the previus recrd hlder. Exactly what is driving this speed is unclear.
“This is difficult t explain using ur current mdels,” says Seidel. “What we see nw is actually the ppsite f what cmes ut f thery.”
