When yung, I lved ging n trail(小路) runs. It was my favrite way t escape stress. S, when I was back in my hmetwn after a tugh first year f my Ph. D. prgram, I thught a trail run was just what I needed. But instead f helping me relax, the run did just the ppsite.
After I mved t the city fr cllege, where my runs were n flat cncrete paths instead f winding dirt trails, I used a GPS watch. When I went n trail runs again in the cuntry, it cnstantly reminded me f the fact that I wasn’t keeping up with my usual pace. I turned my watch ff, thinking that wuld allw me t enjy my surrundings and find the peace I expected, but I wrried I was underperfrming. “Why can’ t I let g and just enjy myself?” I wndered. But after sme intrspectin(反省), I realized why I was struggling—bth n trail runs and in graduate schl.
Ging int my Ph. D. , I had thught that my slid undergraduate track recrd wuld set me up fr instant success. T my surprise, I was wrng. I lacked cnfidence in my research abilities which I thught stpped me perfrming well and I cnstantly felt my prgress was t slw. Other students’ self-cnfidence and their excellent results made me feel insecure. Finally, ne day I brke dwn in tears in my adviser’ s ffice.

A Ph. D. is like a trail run: Smetimes yu can run fast. Smetimes yu might find yurself climbing up a steep, winding trail at a snail’ s pace. And that’ s OK. Barriers are unavidable, and success lks and feels different n a challenging trail than it des n a smth, flat path. Smetimes it’ s best t take a deep breath and d yur best t meet the challenge.

University f Pennsylvania researchers say that fr the first time they have linked scial media use t increases in depressin and lneliness. The idea that scial media is anything but scial when it cmes t mental health has been talked abut fr years, but nt many studies have managed t actually link the tw. T d that, Penn researchers, led by psychlgist Melissa Hunt, designed a study that fcused n WeChat, Snapchat and Instagram.
The study was cnducted with 143 participants, wh befre they began, cmpleted a md survey and sent alng phts f their battery screens, shwing hw ften they were using their phnes t access scial media. "We set ut t d a much mre cmplete study which attempts t imitate real life." Hunt said.
The study divided the participants int tw grups: The first grup was allwed t maintain their nrmal scial media habits. The ther, the cntrl grup, was restricted t 10 minutes per day n scial media. The restrictins were put in place fr three weeks and then the participants returned and were tested fr utcmes such as fear f missing ut, anxiety, depressin and lneliness.
The results shwed a very clear link between scial media use and increased levels f depressin and lneliness. "Using less scial media than yu nrmally d wuld lead t significant decreases in bth depressin and lneliness," Hunt said.
Scial media invites what Hunt calls "dwnward scial cmparisn." "When yu're nline, it can smetimes seem that everyne else is cler and having mre fun and included in mre things and yu're left ut," Hunt said. And that's just generally discuraging. "Every minute yu spend nline is a minute yu are nt ding yur wrk r nt meeting a friend fr dinner r having a deep cnversatin with yur rmmate." And these real life activities are the nes that can encurage self﹣esteem and self﹣wrth, Hunt added.
"Peple are n their devices, and that's nt ging t change," she said. But as in life, a bit f cntrl ges a lng way.
