I was struggling with writing and my brther-in-law, Rb, a prfessr f ethics (伦理学), ffered a small insight int his wn practice.
He, t, fund writing difficult. The nly way he’d been able t prduce anything that apprximate (接近) a cnsistent academic utput was by devting half an hur t it everyday. In that half hur, he had tw ptins: he culd write, r he culd d nthing. Smetimes he sat there fr quite a lng time befre he wrte but he always came away frm the sessin with new wrds n the page.
Sn afterwards I gave his technique a g—and it stuck. Smetimes I’ve had t stick my phne in a drawer with a timer running t avid dmscrlling Twitter instead (scial media des nt cunt as “ding nthing” but, in the years since, I’ve reverted t this technique whenever I find myself at a creative impasse (僵局) n a prject. It helped me finish a bk a few years ag, and it helped me get the first 15,000 wrds f smething new dwn just a few mnths ag. One f the main reasns it wrks, I think, is that it vercmes the first, and biggest barrier: shwing up.
Prcrastinatin (拖延) can get in anyne’s way but I’ve als nticed creative peple in particular can get all caught up in their messy feelings abut their wrk and whether r nt the cnditins are right fr them t channel their muse (灵感).
If wrking in jurnalism has taught me anything, it’s that there is n “right” time and there are n “right” cnditins; there is the time yu have. Yu use the materials yu’ve gt. And the first precnditin f getting anything dne at all is trying t d it. S if yu’re struggling with smething creative, just give yurself 30 minutes. Yu’ll either d the wrk r yu’ll d nthing. But at least yu’ll be able t say yu shwed up.
24. What des the text shw abut Rb’s apprach t writing?
A. He relied n inspiratin t guide his writing.
B. He wrte fr lng uninterrupted perids f time.
C. He turned t writing in mments f uncertainty.
D. He set aside half an hur each day t write r d nthing.
25. What des the underlined part “reverted t” in paragraph 3 prbably mean?
A. Cntributed t. B. Returned t.C. Accunted fr. D. Aplgized fr.
26. Hw des the text characterize the relatinship between prcrastinatin and creativity?
A. Prcrastinatin can stp the creative prcess.
B. Prcrastinatin is a sign f a lack f creativity.
C. Prcrastinatin is mre ppular amng creative individuals.
D. Prcrastinatin can be an essential part f the creative prcess.
27. What is the first step fr getting anything creative dne accrding t the text?
A. Having the right materials. B. Having the right cnditins.
C. Feeling inspired by a muse. D. Making an attempt t start the wrk.

Scientists nw knw that healthy sils have a unique sund landscape prduced by invertebrates (无脊椎动物) such as earthwrms and ants, but they have nt yet studied hw this backgrund nise in the ecsystem affects plant and fungal (真菌的) grwth.
T investigate the impacts f sund n fungi, Jake Rbinsn at Flinders University in Australia and his team buried regular teabags in sil inside a sundprf (隔音的) bx. Inside the bx, they played an 8 kHz tne at a vlume f 70 dB fr ne set f teabags and 90 dB fr anther, 8 hurs per day fr 14 days. A cntrl grup received nly ambient (周围的) sund stimulatin f less than 30 dB.
At the end f the experiment, bth sets f teabags expsed t sund had increased in weight, frm 2.5 grams t 3.1 grams n average, due t the grwth f fungi. The cntrl teabags stayed the same weight n average.
Rbinsn ntes that much mre wrk is required t fully explain their bservatins. While the results may seem surprising, he says we can think f sund as an energy input which the fungi are smehw turning int grwth. This may be thrugh a s-called piezelectric effect (压电效应) , in which mechanical pressure is transfrmed int electrical energy.
He hpes the research leads t ways t restre habitats by bradcasting sunds. “We nw need t build n these findings and transfrm them int an applied use,” Rbinsn says. “If we can use these findings in ecsystem restratin and agriculture, then that wuld be great.”
Christina Birnbaum at the University f Suthern Queensland, Australia, says in terms f ecsystem restratin, this is pineering wrk.
Hwever, the mechanism (机制) by which sund is translated t grwth is still unclear. “The next step is t recreate these findings in the field where yu have all these ther factrs cmplicating the labratry results,” Birnbaum says.
28. What was the aim f Jake Rbinsn’s experiment?
A. T see hw sunds influence fungi.
B. T find a way t imprve sil health.
C. T determine the harm f backgrund nise.
D. T explre why invertebrates prduce sund.
29. What happened t the teabags in the experimental grup?
A. They changed clr. B. They became heavier.
C. They were eaten by earthwrms.D. They were well integrated with the sil.
30. What is the piezelectric effect used t explain?
A. The grwth f fungi. B. The prcess f restring habitats.
C. The ptential applicatins f this study. D. The transfrmatin f electrical energy.
31. What des Christina Birnbaum suggest fr the next step f study?
A. Cnducting mre labratry experiments.
B. Extending the study t a real-wrld setting.
C. Identifying the factrs affecting the labratry results.
D. Explring alternative methds fr ecsystem restratin.

Language gegraphy is a field f study that examines the way languages are distributed acrss the glbe, frming linguistic cuntries and natin-states f their wn. Plitical brders are what frequently determine language brders, but there are als a hst f ther cultural, ecnmic and, yes, gegraphical cnsideratins.
At its simplest, gegraphy is the study f the features that make up the earth: the muntains, the plains, the cntinents and s n. That said, the field is ften split int tw: physical gegraphy and human gegraphy. The frmer refers t lking at the actual physical features f the Earth. T understand language gegraphy, it’s imprtant t understand linguistic drift, which describes hw languages change ver time, similar t genetic variatin(基因变异). Histrically, befre natinal languages were established, languages spread gegraphically as gradients f dialects(方言的梯度).
Gegraphical features like muntains, rivers, and deserts significantly influence hw well neighbring cmmunities can understand each ther. Fr instance, muntain ranges can set language speakers apart, causing languages t branch ff significantly, as seen with the Basque language (Euskara), which develped separately with n clse linguistic relatives.
Meanwhile, wide, flat areas like plains are called linguistic spread znes. These are regins with many languages, where different grups f speakers mix and ften replace ne anther ver time. These include areas like the Eurasian steppe, the American Great Plains and sub-Saharan Africa.
Additinally, altitude(高度)affects language sund prductin. A study published in PLS ONE fund a crrelatin between high-altitude languages and ejective cnsnants—sunds made with bursts f air rather than thrugh lung pwer. This sund prductin methd may help cnserve water vapr, which is vital in high-altitude envirnments, acting as a bilgical adaptatin t prevent dehydratin(脱水)and altitude sickness.
32. What can be learned abut language gegraphy?
A. It is ne f the branches f genetics.
B. It mainly studies the feature f ur planet.
C. It invlves bvius changes in human histry.
D. It fcuses n human interactin with the Earth.
33. What are the languages prbably like in the American Great Plains?
A. They cme and g. B. They differ dramatically.
C. They develp independently. D. They have special sunds.
34. What will prbably be discussed next?
A. The rle f dialects in language evlutin.
B. The applicatin f the sund prductin methd.
C. The influence f human gegraphy n hw we speak.
D. The difference f languages acrss different cuntries.
35. What is the best title fr this passage?
A. When Natinal Languages Were Established
B. Why Languages Change Cntinuusly
C. Hw Gegraphy Impacts Languages
D. What Determines Plitical Brders
