A United Natins scientific reprt states that human-caused climate change is greatly reducing land quality wrldwide. It als warns that the way humans use land is causing the Earth t warm faster and culd harm fd prductin.
Abut 30 percent f the Earth’s surface is land, but the land is warming tw times faster than the planet as a whle. While greenhuse gases are causing glbal (全球的) warming, land has been less talked abut as a part f climate change. In-fact, the way we use land is bth part f the prblem and part f the slutin.
Climate change has caused serius harm t the land. It has caused deserts t spread and made frests mre easily harmed by fire, disease and shrtage f water. Meanwhile, farming and frestry tgether accunt fr abut 23 percent f the greenhuse gases.
Scientists have lng believed that ne f the few gd things abut higher levels f carbn dixide (CO2) is that plants grw well in such cnditins. But many studies shw that the high levels f carbn dixide reduce prtein (蛋白质) and nutrients (营养物) in many crps. Fr example, they cause wheat t have 6 t 13 percent less prtein, 4 t 7 percent less zinc (Zn) and 8 percent less irn (Fe). The reprt als warns f mre harmful effects f climate change n the glbal fd supply (供应). It predicts a rise f 7.6 percent in cereal (谷物) prices by 2050. Higher fd prices will lead t an increased risk f hunger.
The reprt suggests that we can change the way we farm and eat t slw dwn the temperature rise. It ntes that better, smarter farming methds can reduce carbn levels by up t 18 percent f present emissin (排放) levels by 2050. Carbn emissins can be reduced further if we eat less red meat and mre plant-based fds like fruits, vegetables and seeds. That will als free up several millin square kilmetres f land by 2050.
Reducing fd waste is als an imprtant part f fighting climate change. The reprt ntes that almst ne-third f fd prduced is lst r wasted. Reducing fd waste wuld reduce emissins and help feed mre peple. Hwever, the reprt warns that “the windw fr making these changes is clsing fast.”
      27. Accrding t the reprt, what is ne cause f climate change?
      A. Frest fires.B. Imprper land use.
      C. Lw rainfalls.D. Large areas f deserts.
      28. What des the example f wheat in Paragraph 4 shw?
      A. The reasn fr the increase f fd prices.
      B. The disadvantage f wheat as a cereal crp.
      C. The effect f climate change n fd quality.
      D. The imprtance f wheat in crp prductin.
      29. What can we learn frm the passage?
      A. Smarter farming will increase carbn emissins.
      B. Wrldwide hunger is mainly caused by fd waste.
C Cereal prductin mstly depends n farming methds.
      D. Eating less red meat can slw dwn the temperature rise.
      D
Des this sund familiar? A wrkmate asks, “What are yu up t this weekend?” Yu tell her yu’re nt sure. She replies with her wn exciting plan. “I’m ging t my lake huse t have a big party.”
I call this “bmerasking”. Like a bmerang, bmeraskers ask a questin, let their partner answer and then immediately bring the fcus f the cnversatin back t themselves. They try t bth shw interest in their partner and disclse smething abut themselves, but they fail t achieve either gal.
We knw it is gd t shw interest in ur partners during cnversatins in many ways—by asking questins, supprting a different pinin, r saying smething that relates t what the ther persn just said. Hwever, self-centredness is tricky t utrun. As humans, we mstly think abut ur wn viewpint. Between 40% and 60% f what peple say in cnversatins is abut themselves—their feelings, pinins, and persnal experiences. On scial media, it’s even wrse—80% f cmmunicatin is self-related.
Fr many peple, self-disclsure simply feels great. A willingness t pen up t thers is an imprtant sign f liking and clseness: it shws that yu trust smene t knw things abut yu. It’s als the primary way peple shape hw thers think f them. By carefully chsing what t share, we try t seem kind, smart, cnfident and interesting in ur partners’ eyes. And we shw ff r cmplain, hping t receive admiratin r understanding.
Still, we recgnise that scial rules discurage verly self-centred behaviur and try t deal with this prblem with sme indirect habits. Peple wh want thers t admire them might pretend (假装) t cmplain while actually shwing ff, like saying, “I’m tired frm all the interviews abut my new bk.” Others wanting t seem higher psitin might give mixed praise, like “Yur ideas were pretty gd, fr a beginner.” But cmpared with these ways we try t hide ur self-centredness, bmerasking may be wrse because it reduces the benefits f asking questins.
Asking heartfelt questins, listening t thers’ answers and fllwing up n thse answers may be the easiest and mst pwerful pathway t shared understanding and interpersnal cnnectin. Bmerasking breaks the magic. Failing t fllw up n yur partner’s answer, and answering the questin yurself instead, makes thers feel like yu dn’t care abut them.
S dn’t bmerask! When anther persn shares their views, fcus n them. We shuld all aim t be mre interested in ur partners befre we g back t prving hw interesting we are urselves.
      30. What will bmeraskers d after they ask a questin abut yur hbbies?
      A. Stay quiet and give yu space t talk freely.
      B. Stp yu when yu talk and discuss a different tpic.
      C. Listen t yur answer carefully and ask fllw-up questins.
      D. Pay little attentin t yur answer and talk abut their hbbies.
      31. The wrds “tricky t utrun” in Paragraph 3 prbably mean “________”.
      A. hard t shake ffB. unusual t seeC. pleasant t acceptD. simple t deal with
      32. The writer prbably agrees that ________.
      A. bmerasking balances caring abut thers and pening up
      B. self-centredness is unwelcme even when expressed indirectly
      C. mixed praise is a straight and hnest way t express admiratin
      D. it’s wise t shape thers’ pinins by sharing a lt abut yurself
      33. What is the writer’s main purpse in writing this passage?
      A. T guide peple in building interesting cnversatins.
      B. T prve the effect f self-centredness in cnversatins.
      C. T encurage better listening and replying in cnversatins.
      D. T explre the reasns fr peple’s shwing ff in cnversatins.
