Mre than 1,000 metres belw the surface f the ceans, darkness dminates. Marine creatures rely n sund fr navigatin, cmmunicatin, and searching fr fd. Hwever, this way f life has cme under threat frm shipping, cntributing t a rise in underwater vlume f apprximately 3.3 decibels(分贝) per decade. The trend shws little sign f levelling ff.
With rughly 90% f trade relying n shipping, quieting the cean thrugh reductins in shipping itself is untenable. While efficiency imprvements f shipping may cut nise, experts say mre is needed. That is why technlgies like mdified prpellers(螺旋桨) and nise-reducing materials are being develped t help humans and marine life cexist.
Much f the underwater nise a ship prduces cmes frm its prpeller. Spinning blades(桨叶) create lw pressure, causing the water t bil and prduce bubbles, a prcess knwn as cavitatin(空化现象). When thse bubbles cllapse,a lw-frequency nise is prduced, disrupting the mvements f marine lives.
One slutin, being develped by researchers at the University f British Clumbia, integrates
flexible plymers(聚合物) int the metal prpeller blades, allwing their tips t bend and twist. This
mvement prevents bubbles frm frming and thereby reduces the nise the blades prduce. Based n simulatins, the design culd reduce cavitatin nise by 20 decibels. Dr Jaiman says researchers intend t start testing a mdel next year.Cavitatin can als be reduced by increasing the number f bubbles, rather than reducing them.
Researchers at MARIN,a Dutch research institute, have blwn bubbles nt a prpeller's blades, which can dampen the resulting nise. Mdel-scale tests f this system shwed a 12-decibel decrease in lw-frequency nise. But shipping nise des nt cme nly frm the prpeller, with rughly 20%
cming frm engines and generatrs. T reduce this, MARIN researchers have experimented with a
bubble screen generated frm tubes psitined in belts arund the utside f the ship. These bubbles
prevent nise frm spreading.
28. Which best explains the underlined wrd“untenable” in paragraph 2?
A. Impractical. B. Unavailable.C. Unstable. D. Immeasurable.

A. Bsting ship efficiency.
B. Creating flexible blade tips.
C. Generating mre bubbles n blades.
D. Using quieter engines and generatrs.
31. What's the passage mainly abut?
A. Strategies t prevent ships frm making nise.
B. Innvatins t minimize underwater ship nise.
C. Adapted prpeller designs t restre undersea quiet.
D. Negative impacts f underwater nise n marine life.

Because we cut dwn t many trees in the nearby areas, many birds nw find places within the city t live. The mst cmmn is the area behind the large advertisement bards n the ples. It’s a natural chice fr the birds because the ples are similar t trees, tall and far frm dangers n the grund. The surprising thing is that there are likely mre than five r six kinds f birds living tgether at each place. While trying t learn mre abut these birds, I find that there have nt been any cnsistent studies r mnitring f them. Their eating habits, adaptatin t life in the city, diseases, death rate, and such ther infrmatin are nt available. I’d like t suggest that a prgram be started t study these birds. It culd be cnvenient t emply bird-watchers t d the initial studies.
