Eric Ashby’s fascinatin with nature began at an early age. His first article; Bird Phtgraphy. an Ideal Hbby fr Bys, was published when he was just 16 and illustrated with phtgraphs that he’d taken.
His interest in phtgraphy had been sparked fur years earlier in 1930, when the wildlife phtgrapher Cherry Keartn came t Suthsea, Ashby’s hmetwn, t present a shw f his wrk. The 12-year-ld Ashby saw the shw and immediately started saving; his pcket mney t buy a camera fr filming wildlife in the nearby New Frest. But Ashby’s films did nt reach the public due t the Wrld War II.
After the war, he and his wife Eileen mved t Badger（獾）Cttage, in the heart f the New Frest. It was here that Ashby perfected the techniques that wuld make him famus thrugh the new medium f televisin. His patience and technical knwledge allwed him t film badgers at their hles during daylight —the first time this behavir had ever been captured n camera. In 1961, at the age f 43, Ashby finally gt his big break, when the BBC shwed his 45-minute film The Unknwn Frest. The film had taken fur years t make and received a very psitive respnse frm viewers. The nature writer Richard Mabey was hugely impressed and remarked that the film “changed the standards fr hme-grw n wildlife dcumentaries”.

A new study led by researchers at the Yale Schl f Public Health finds air pllutin may negatively impact standardized test scres. Using data frm the Nrth Carlina Educatin Research Data Center, the researchers tracked 2．8 millin public schl students in Nrth Carlina frm 2001 t 2018 and measured their expsure t PM2.5fund in plluted air. While previus researches have shwn negative effects n academic perfrmance, they have relied n relatively small r less representative samples. “The biggest strength f this study is that we tracked every student in Nrth Carlina in thse years, fr the whle time perid that they were in the public schls,” said Emma Zang, cauthr f the study.
The study als finds that test scres f ethnic minrities and girls are disprprtinately（不成比例地）impacted by PM2.5levels. “Females and ethnic minrities face-sexism and racism,” said Zang. “There are a lt f plicies that are nt friendly twards them. T understand why we make such errrs, Jeff Jhnstn at Clumbia University and his clleagues recrded the brain activity f tw mnkeys because a mnkey’s wrking memry is very similar t humans’.
The mnkeys were shwn tw differently clured squares, ne abve the ther, fr half a secnd. After a shrt delay, a black spt appeared in the same lcatin as ne f the squares, and then disappeared. The animals were trained t tell the clur f the square they were suppsed t be remembering based n the lcatin f the spt. When ding this fr abut 3 hurs ver multiple sessins, the mnkeys perfrmed the task crrectly between 60 and 82 percent f the time, but ccasinally made swap errrs.
The research suggests that the brain respnses linked t swap errrs emerged befre the animals decided which clur t reprt. They appeared t arise during “selectin” when certain item s stred in wrking memry are enhanced at the expense f thers, rather than ccurring as a result f frgetting.

Eric Ashby’s fascinatin with nature began at an early age. His first article; Bird Phtgraphy. an Ideal Hbby fr Bys, was published when he was just 16 and illustrated with phtgraphs that he’d taken.
