When Jhn Lewis Elementary Schl pened in August 2021, it became the first schl in the District f Clumbia schl system t pursue a WELL Building certificatin (认证). T get it, the schl was designed and built with mental health in mind.
The WELL Building Standard is a set f cncepts laid ut by the Internatinal WELL Building Institute, an rganizatin fcused n the relatinship between design and health. Thse cncepts— keying in n air, water, light, mvement, temperature cntrl, sund, materials, mind, cmmunity, and innvatin— are built ff decades f research demnstrating hw design can supprt active learning and childhd develpment.
“There are cuntless strategies that we have fr really imprving educatinal utcmes and fr imprving the mental health f students, teachers, and staff,” said Rachel Hdgdn, the president and CEO f the IWBI.
Large glass windws that allw fr natural light t fill the whle library, undergrund heat wells that heat the building, pd-style classrms with garage-style drs that lead t shared areas, and increased ventilatin (通风) are all elements that were designed as part f the certificatin. And the schl itself is part f DCPS’ Capital Imprvement Plan, a six-year, $2.5 billin t mdernize its facilities.
“We’ re here fr academics, but if yu’ re nt well, yu can’t learn,” Jhn Lewis Elementary’s principal, Nikeysha Jacksn, said. “I think this building really supprts that and it’s a step in the right directin.”
