One f my earliest memries is f my father sitting me dwn at ur kitchen table with canvases, paints, and
1
brushes. He taught me hw t blend clrs and use different materials. Whenever we felt inspired, we set ut all
ur materials and painted what ur hearts desired.
My father grew up in a small village in the Dminican Republic. Despite nt having many materials available,
he created art with whatever he had. My father saved his mney t buy paints and clred pencils t draw n the
walls arund his hme. When he was 15, he arrived in America alne and stayed with his aunt in Flrida fr a
while befre finishing high schl in New Yrk with anther aunt. He studied very hard. Eventually, my father was
able t btain his citizenship.
As I gt lder, he cntinued t give me lessns, teaching me different brush strkes and hw t take care f
my art supplies. He taught me t find beauty in everything and everyne arund me. I grew t lve drawing peple,
as I culd highlight the physical features that make everyne unique and beautiful. It wasn’t until I began lking
carefully int my father’s paintings and the wrk f ppular artists n Instagram that I started t be mre critical f
my wrk. I started t wrry that I culd never live up t my father’s talent. My simple, tw-dimensinal drawings
felt flat cmpared t his realistic landscapes. Ging thrugh his sketchbks and prtflis(画夹), I fund fault in
all my drawings. Art was my favrite thing in the wrld but I started t believe I wasn’t gd at it. Instead f
wrking tward imprving, I decided t give up drawing.
My father nticed that I had been drawing and painting less and tld me, “Mia, yu shuld auditin fr the
schl. I wish I’d had an pprtunity t study art like this when I was a kid.” My father’s bravery and strength are
things that I desire t have. S ver the next few mnths, I wrked n my prtfli. Lking back at my pictures, I
can see hw much I have imprved since then. The schl must have seen ptential in my drawings because I gt
in! It was eye-pening t attend a cllege that specialized in the arts. I learned t embrace my individuality and my
talent. I have becme mre pen abut sharing my artwrks and receiving cnstructive criticism, which raises my

As the planet warms up and ceans rise, extreme weather events are becming the nrm. Getting ntified in
time t prepare fr a disastrus hurricane r heat wave culd be the disparity between life and death. AI can help.
Tw studies published in the jurnal Nature described the benefit f tw AI mdels that culd imprve weather
frecasting.
The first AI-based system is called Pangu-Weather, which was develped by the Huawei Clud team. It was capable f predicting glbal weather a week in advance. A majrity f cuntries use numerical(数值) weather
predictin mdels. These mdels use math frmulas t create cmputer mdels f the atmsphere and ceans fr
2
predicting future weather with data frm them. What makes Pangu-Weather different is that the Pangu-Weather
mdel is deeply trained with the help f 39-year glbal weather data, preparing it t frecast temperature, pressure,
and wind speed. When cmpared t the numerical weather predictin methd, Pangu-Weather was 10,000 times
faster and n less accurate. Pangu-Weather als cntains a 3D mdel, unlike past AI frecasting systems, that
allws it t recrd atmspheric states at different pressure levels t further increase its accuracy.
Pangu-Weather can predict weather patterns 5-7 days in advance. Hwever, it can’t frecast precipitatin(降
水). As precipitatin predictin is vital fr extreme weather frecasting, a secnd Nature mdel, NwcastNet, fills
this gap. It can accurately predict rainfall 6 hurs ahead, helping meterlgists(气象学家) study weather patterns
in real-time mre effectively.
NwcastNet fcuses n detailed, realistic descriptins f extreme rainfall patterns in lcal regins. It uses
radar bservatins frm the US and China, as well as deep learning methds, t predict precipitatin rates ver a
1.6-millin-square-mile regin f the eastern and central US up t 3 hurs in advance. 62 meterlgists frm
China tested NwcastNet and ranked it first, ut f fur ther leading weather frecasting methds, in reliably
predicting heavy rain, which it did 71 percent f the time.
While generative AI mdels have gd prspects in weather frecasting, experts pint ut that replacing
existing systems has many challenges. Hwever, in 5-10 years, these mdels may surprise us.
28. What des the underlined wrd “disparity” in paragraph 1 prbably mean?
A. Struggle. B. Difference. C. Decisin. D. Settlement.
29. What is the advantage f Pangu-Weather cmpared with the numerical weather predictin methd?
A. It can recrd mre detailed atmspheric states.
B. It can predict precipitatin mre accurately.
C. It can prvide a 3D view f the weather.
D. It is much faster and equally accurate.
30. What can we learn abut NwcastNet frm the text?
A. It was develped by 62 meterlgists frm China.
B. It is mainly used t predict glbal weather patterns.
C. It ranks first amng all weather frecasting methds in predicting heavy rain.
D. It uses radar bservatins and deep learning t predict precipitatin in the US.
31. What is the text mainly abut?
A. The challenges in using generative AI in weather frecasting.
B. The impacts f climate change n extreme weather events.
C. The intrductin f tw AI-based weather-frecasting mdels and their features.
D. The explanatin f the traditinal numerical weather-predictin methd.

Hw might yu make yur mark n the wrld frever? Write a play greater than Shakespeare’s, r scre the winning Wrld Cup gal? There’s an easier way — just live yur everyday life. Yu’ll likely leave a fascinating
legacy(遗产) that might last a billin years.
As palaentlgists(古生物学家), we have studied the fssil recrd f the deep past. We’ve nw turned ur attentin t the everyday bjects, t see what kind f future fssils — we call them technfssils — they will make. We’ve written abut this in ur new bk, Discarded: hw technfssils will be ur ultimate legacy. Here are sme key messages:
The first things that’ll catch the eye f any far-future palaentlgist are ur manufactured bjects —
buildings, rads, machines. In recent decades, they have rcketed in amunt and nw utweigh all living things n
Earth. That’s a lt f raw material fr generating future fssils.
Then, mst things are designed t be durable and are significantly tugher than the average bne r shell. Sme, like aluminium(铝) cans, are gelgical nvelties. Discarded aluminium cans are nw everywhere. Thugh
3
resistant, buried cans will slwly break dwn, leaving can-shaped impressins, lined with tiny minerals. Their
plastic liner may endure, frming future fssil signatures f ur era.
Bnes, classic fssil relics, will tell a stry. The supermarket chicken, nw Earth’s mst cmmn bird, has a
high chance f fssilizatin. Buried in plastic-lined landfills, they will dry ut, harden and turn t stne. Future
gelgists may see their weak, defrmed remains as evidence f human-driven genetic changes fr mass
prductin. It’s fun t imagine this and place the human stry within Earth’s grand histry. But there’s a mre
trubling truth. Tmrrw’s fssils are tday’s pllutin: damaging, ften txic, and cstly. If we fail t act, these
technfssils will serve as a lasting reminder f envirnmental neglect, lcking in harm fr future generatins.
32. What can we learn abut technfssils frm the text?
A. They are made up f natural materials.
B. They are frmed frm daily pllutants.
C. They have higher fssilizatin rates.
D. They disappear quickly withut a trace.
33. Why are the supermarket chickens mentined in the text?
A. T explain why chickens are the mst cmmn birds.
B. T highlight why chickens have genetically changed.
C. T shw hw plastic waste preserves rganic remains.
D. T illustrate hw living creatures might becme fssils.
34. What is the authr’s attitude twards technfssils?
A. Cncerned. B. Disturbed. C. Realistic. D. Dismissive.
35. Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
A. Technfssils: Ultimate Legacy f Future Pllutin?
B. Legacy: Traditinal Fssils and Technfssils?
C. Hw t Keep Fascinating Wrld f Palaentlgy
D. Hw t Make Yur Mark n the Wrld Frever
