The baby mnkey is much mre develped at birth than the human baby. During the first few days f its life the baby mnkey will apprach and hld nt almst any large, warm, and sft bject in its envirnment, particularly if that bject als gives it milk. After a week r s, hwever, the baby mnkey begins t avid newcmers and fcuses its attentins n “mther”— the real mther r the mther-substitute (替代物).
During the first tw weeks, warmth is perhaps the mst imprtant psychlgical (心理的) thing that a mnkey mther has t give t its baby. If the tw artificial mthers were bth the same temperature, the little mnkeys always preferred the clth mther. Why is clth preferable t bare wire? Smething that the Harlws called cntact cmfrt seems t be the answer. Baby mnkeys spend much f their time rubbing against their mthers’ skins. Wire desn’t “rub” as well as sft clth des. Prlnged (长时间的) “cntact cmfrt” with a clth mther appears t give the babies cnfidence and is much mre rewarding t them than either warmth r milk.
Accrding t the Harlws, the basic quality f a baby’s lve fr its mther is trust. If the baby is put int an unfamiliar playrm withut its mther, the baby ignres the tys n matter hw interesting they might be. If its clth mther is nw intrduced int the playrm, the baby rushes t it and hlds nt it fr dear life. After a few minutes f cntact cmfrt, it bviusly begins t feel mre secure. Bit by bit its fears f the new envirnment are gne and it spends mre and mre time playing with the tys and less and less time hlding n t its “mther.”
46. Psychlgically, what des the baby mnkey desire mst during the first tw weeks f its life?
A. WarmthB. Milk
C. CntactD. Trust
47. After the first tw weeks f their life, baby mnkeys prefer the clth mther t the wire mther because the frmer is ________.
A. larger in size
B. clser t them
C. less frightening and less disturbing
D. mre cmfrtable t rub against
48. What des the baby mnkey prbably gain frm prlnged “cntact cmfrt”?
A. AttentinB. Sftness
C. CnfidenceD. Interest
49. It can be inferred that when the baby mnkey feels secure, ________.
A. it frequently rushes back fr a deep embrace when explring the tys
B. it spends mre time screaming t get rewards
C. it is less attracted t the tys thugh they are interesting
