I’m nt a fan f patchwrk quilts (拼缝被子). While I appreciate the feelings and effrt put int making them, I usually dn’t really care abut the end result. Surprisingly, hwever, there is a small patchwrk quilt in my hme.
This quilt riginally belnged t my mther. In her later years, after my father passed away, she jined a weekly ‘bk club’ with sme wmen frm the neighbrhd. In fact, it was mre f an excuse t get tgether and drink cffee. One f the ladies, Emily, was skilled in handicrafts and she made my mther a small quilt.
Fr years, this quilt sat flded n a chair in my mm’s living rm. It went with her when she mved t a small, ne-bedrm suite at an assisted living facility (辅助生活机构). I never saw my mther use it thrughut all thse years.
During ne f my visits, I playfully teased (取笑) my mm abut her never using the quilt and asked her why she kept it. She said it was because it was a gift frm Emily. I questined further, as she was nt particularly clse t Emily and did nt even like the quilt’s design. Her respnse remained the same: Because it was frm Emily.
After thinking this ver fr several days, I came t realize that the quilt’s value did nt lie in its appearance r in its maker, but rather in the significance it held fr my mther abut neighbrliness, cmmunity and caring fr ne anther.
I inherited (继承) the quilt mre than a decade ag and it has remained flded n a shelf ever since. My plan is t ne day gift it t my daughter, but I wn’t pressure her t keep it, althugh I’m secretly hping she will.

Mst peple suffer frm what is knwn as “Just-me-ism”. What is that? Well, say yu leave the tap running while yu brush yur teeth, leave a light n when yu g ut r yu drp a piece f litter (垃圾) and can’t be bthered t pick it up. Yu knw that all thse things are wrng. But s what? “What difference can it pssibly make?” yu say t yurself. There are millins f peple in the wrld and I’m just me. Hw can it matter if I leave ne little tap running, ne little light n r leave a little piece f litter n the rad? “And anyway, n ne will knw,” Of curse, it wuldn’t matter if there were just a few peple in the wrld. But just think f all the millins f peple saying t themselves: “It desn’t matter. It’s just me. And, anyway, n ne knws.” Millins f gallns f water wuld be wasted; millins f lights wuld be left n; millins f pieces f litter wuld be drpped. And all f this wuld be very harmful.
T inspire yung peple t take actin fr the envirnment, animals and their cmmunity, Rts & Shts was established. The rts and shts are yu, yur friends and yung peple all arund the wrld. Hundreds and thusands f rts and shts can slve the prblems, change the wrld and make it a better place t live in.
D yu think yu help t make the wrld a better place when yu make a sad persn smile, when yu make a dg wag (摇摆) its tail, and when yu water a thirsty plant? One cheered-up persn, ne happy dg, ne flwering plant, and yu. That’s what Rts & Shts is all abut: the value and imprtance f each individual — human, animal r plant. Dr. Jane Gdall believes that the mst imprtant thing is that: “Every individual matters. Every individual has a rle t play. Every individual makes a difference. Yu get t chse: D yu want t use yur life t make the wrld a better place fr peple, animals and the envirnment? D yu want t make Rts & Shts rted in everyne’s heart? D yu want t be a part f a cmmunity fr a shared future? Yu cannt be absent.”

There are a fair few benefits f waking up early. There is increasing evidence (证据) that suggests mrning peple culd be healthier. Accrding t a new study, wmen in particular wh wake up earlier culd be less likely t develp depressin. Researchers wanted t see if a wman’s chrntype (睡眠类型) — whether they were an “early bird” r “night wl” — had any influence n their risk f depressin (抑郁).
They used data frm a large study that recrded the health f mre than 32.000 female nurses in the US, with an average age f 55 fr-nearly thirty years. In 2009, they were asked t tell whether they were a mrning r evening persn, then they fllwed up after fur years t see hw many f them develped depressin. During that time there were 2,581 new cases f depressin, and thse mrning types were smewhere between 12 and 27% less likely t develp depressin.
The results shw that smene’s chrntype culd be a reasn fr develping depressin, but the risk is small. The study was based n a special grup f peple, wh are in a highly emtinally and energetically demanding jb, and s there is n certainty that the risk f depressin is influenced by their sleeping habits. The results are nt necessarily suitable fr ther wmen f the same age, r men, r children, either.
Hwever, the study des raise sme interesting pints f discussin. Fr example, recent research fund that disrupting (干扰) ur bdy clck can increase ur risk f md disrders like depressin. Nurses wrk lng hurs and they ften wrk at night. That may cause psychlgical prblems.
Research has als fund that t much sleep and t little sleep are bth likely t be bad fr yur health, and the best way t make sure yu’re getting the right amunt is t stick t a schedule. That means that even if yu have a late night, yu shuld try and get up at the same time every day.
While the answer isn’t as simple as early birds being healthier than night wls, what is clear is that sleep is imprtant t aviding diseases.

53. Accrding t the passage, nurses are at risk f psychlgical prblems because ______.
A. they have much wrk t dB. their bdy clck is disrdered
C. they always sleep lateD. their sleep time is shrt
54. What des the fifth paragraph mainly suggest?
A. Wrking less time.B. Nt wrking late at night.
