Jessie Jy Rees is just such a persn. The blnde-haired, Califrnia kid with the big persnality as fun as a day at the beach became the vice f curage fr kids with cancer. Athletic and energetic, Jessie had her whle wrld in frnt f her, until she was diagnsed with an inperable brain tumr (肿瘤) in 2011. Dctrs estimated that she had just 1% chance f survival and less than a year t live. With n ther treatment ptins, her family entered Jessie fr a clinical trial. Fr weeks she underwent 30 runds f raditherapy. Amazingly, the pain and uncertainty never lessened her shine, and Jessie always remained psitive thrughut it all.
Three weeks int her treatment, Jessie asked an uncharacteristically mature questin fr such a yung girl. Lking ut at the ther children wh were als ging thrugh cancer treatment, she asked her parents: “Hw can we help them?” Jessie’s heart was bigger than any tumr. “She was determined t make ther cancer kids happy,” her father Erik tenderly remembers. “Hw culd we nt help?”
Thugh 12-year-ld Jessie had a slight chance f beating cancer, she reslved t make the mst f her time. The mrning after her diagnsis, Jessie was at the kitchen table packing bags f tys fr ther cancer patients. The packages became hspital-safe plastic jars stuffed with tys, crafts and activities t surprise children while they are in the hspital fr treatment. JyJars, named after Jessie’s middle name, cntain a little bit f fun during rdinary days, but mstly they cntain a little bit f Jessie’s psitive attitude that fills the rm every time ne is pened.
Jessie Jy Rees, a special sul wh culd radiate s much gd in s shrt a time, passed away less than a year frm her diagnsis: But her parents keep the jy alive. In a paper published n March 13 in Science, researchers at Stanfrd University used machine learning t analyze data f ice mvements in Antarctica fr the first time. Their wrk reveals sme f the fundamental physics gverning the mvements f the Antarctic ice sheet and culd help imprve predictins abut hw the cntinent will change in the future.
The Antarctic ice sheet, Earth’s largest ice mass and nearly twice the size f Australia, keeps sea levels stable by string freshwater as ice. T understand the mvement f the Antarctic ice sheet, which is shrinking mre rapidly every year, existing mdels have typically relied n assumptins abut ice’s mechanical behavir frm lab experiments.
“But Antarctica’s ice is much mre cmplicated than what can be reprduced in the lab,” said Ching-Ya Lai, a prfessr f gephysics in the university and senir authr n the paper. “Ice frmed frm seawater has different prperties, and ice sheets may cntain large cracks, air pckets, r ther incnsistencies that affect mvement.”
Lai and her clleagues built a machine learning mdel t analyze the mvements with satellite imagery and airplane radar. They fund that the parts f the ice shelves clsest t the cntinent are being cmpressed (压缩) and that the mdels in these areas are fairly cnsistent with lab experiments. Hwever, mst mdels have assumed that Antarctic ice has the same physical prperties in all directins.
In fact, as ice gets farther frm the cntinent, it starts t be pulled ut t sea. The frce causes the ice t have different physical prperties in different directins — a cncept called anistrpy “Our study uncvers that mst f the ice shelf is anistrpic,” said first study authr Yngji Wang, a researcher in Lai’s lab. “Ice in the 5% cmpressin zne almst has the same prperty while fr the rest — the extensin zne, it is nt the case. Nw based n this new methd, we knw that mdels predicting the future evlutin f Antarctica shuld be anistrpic.”
Next, researchers intend t cntinue t perfect their analysis with additinal data frm the Antarctic cntinent and may use these findings t understand the stresses that may cause cracks. They hpe their methds will assist with mre scientific discveries and lead t new cperatin with the Earth science cmmunity.
      28. What is the purpse f machine learning in the research?
      A. Predicting the future changes f Antarctica ice. B. Analyzing the thickness f the Antarctic ice sheet.
      C. Knwing the mvement f the Antarctic ice sheet. D. Studying the physical prperties f ice frm seawater.
      29. Why are existing mdels f ice mvement nt accurate enugh?
      A. They rely t much n the data frm satellites. B. They stress the impact f air pckets and cracks.
      C. They ignre the different prperties in Antarctic ice. D. They fail t measure the size f the Antarctic ice sheet.
      30. What is indicated in the underlined sentence?
      A. Ice behaves variably in all directins. B. Mst ice shelves are in the extensin zne.
      C. Ice in cmpressin zne matches lab results. D. Ice shelves are pulled ut f the cntinent t sea.
      31. What can be inferred abut the researchers’ future plans?
      A. They will build mre satellite mdels. B. They will abandn their current methds.
      C. They will apply the methds t the Earth science. D. They will seek mre data t imprve their analysis.
      D
Neurns (神经元) have histrically been the cell mst assciated with memry. But far utside the brain, kidney (肾) cells can als stre infrmatin and recgnize patterns in a similar way t neurns, researchers reprt Nvember 7 in Nature Cmmunicatins.
In experiments, the kidney cells shwed signs f a “massed-space effect”. This well-knwn feature f hw memry wrks in the brain facilitates string infrmatin in small grups ver time, rather than a big grup at nce.
In neurns, when a chemical signal passes thrugh, the cell starts prducing CREB, a prtein central t memry prcessing. The prtein then turns n mre genes that further change the cell, kick-starting the mlecular (分子的) memry machine. Kukushkin and clleagues set ut t determine whether CREB in nn-neurnal cells respnds t incming signals the same way.
The researchers implanted an artificial gene int human kidney cells, which included instructins fr prducing a glwing prtein fund in fireflies (萤火虫). The team then watched the cells respnd t artificial chemical pulses that cpy the signals that activate the memry activatin pathways in neurns. “Depending n hw much light the glwing prtein prduces, we knw hw strngly that memry gene was turned n,” Kukushkin says.
“This massed-space effect has never been seen utside a brain,” Kukushkin says. “But we prpse that if yu give nn-brain cells cmplicated enugh tasks, they may als be able t frm a memry.”
Neurscientist Ashk Hegde finds the study interesting as it applies a. neurscience principle bradly t understand gene expressin in nn-neurnal cells. But it’s unclear hw applicable the findings are t ther kinds f cells, says Hegde. Still, he says this research may smeday help with the search fr ptential drugs t treat human disease, especially thse where memry lss ccurs.
“Maybe we can think f cancer cells as having memries, and think abut what they can learn frm the pattern f treatment,” Kukushkin says. “Maybe we need t cnsider nt just hw much drug we are giving a persn, but what is the time pattern f that drug, just as we think abut hw t learn mre efficiently.”
      32. What can we learn abut the “massed-space effect”?
      A. It helps frm lng-term memry in brain cells. B. It enhances memry prcessing in kidney cells.
      C. It cntributes t string infrmatin in large units. D. It demnstrates hw memry functins in the brain.
      33. Why did researchers use a glwing prtein frm fireflies?
      A. T test the chemical resistance f cells.B. T visualize the structure f kidney cells.
      C. T track the activatin level f memry genes.D. T cpy the memry activatin signals in neurns.
      34. What is Kukushkin’s main suggestin fr cancer treatment?
      A. Adpting shrter medicatin cycles.B. Finding efficient learning strategies.
      C. Increasing the ttal amunt f drug.D. Designing the treatment schedule f drug.
      35. What is the best title fr the passage?
      A. The Massed-Space Effect f Neurns B. Kidney Cells’ Capability t Stre Memry
      C. The Discvery f a New Prtein in Kidney Cells D. The Rle f CREB Prtein in Memry Prcessing

It was an unusually quiet mrning in the emergency rm n December twenty-fifth. Quiet, that is, except fr the nurses standing arund the nurses’ statin cmplaining abut having t wrk Christmas Day.
I was triage nurse (分诊护士) that day, and was having a cup f ht drink in the nurses’ statin when an admitting clerk came t tell me I had five patients waiting t be evaluated.
I whined (哭嚷着), “Five, hw did I get five!”
S I went straight ut and called the first name. Five bdies shwed up at my triage desk, a pale skinny wman and fur small children in smewhat messy clthing.
“Are yu all sick?” I asked suspiciusly.
“Yes,” she said weakly, lwering her head.
“Okay,” I replied, uncnvinced, “wh’s first?” One by ne they sat dwn, and I asked the usual questins. When it came t descriptins f their presenting prblems, things gt a little strange. Tw f the children had headaches, but the headaches weren’t accmpanied by the nrmal bdy language f hlding the head r trying t keep it still painfully. Tw children had earaches, but nly ne culd tell me which ear was affected. The mther cmplained f a cugh, but seemed t wrk t prduce it.
Smething was wrng. When I explained t the mther that it might be a little while befre a dctr saw her because, even thugh the waiting rm was empty, ambulances had brught in several mre critical patients in the back, she respnded, “Take yur time! It’s warm in here.” She turned and, with a smile, guided her children int the waiting rm.
I checked the chart after the admitting clerk had finished registering the family. N address — they were hmeless. The waiting rm was warm.
I went back t the nurses statin and mentined the hmeless family in the waiting rm. The nurses, cmplaining abut wrking Christmas, turned t sympathy fr a family just trying t get warm n Christmas.

      A篇
文章表示:Any live sprts airing n cable channels likeESPN, FSland CBS Sprts Netwrk are streaming here t. Yu must have a Ggle accunt t subscribe.
Apple's is the nly majr service with exclusively riginal prgramming and n ads.
文章提到“Dctrs estimated that she had just 1% chance f survival and less than a year t live.”以及“Thugh 12-year-ld Jessie had a slight chance f beating cancer, she reslved t make the mst f her time.
根据“She was determined t make ther cancer kids happy.,可知Jessie制作乐罐的目的是为了给患癌的孩子们带来快乐,提供情感上的支持,C选项正确。
文中第二段提到“Amazingly, the pain and uncertainty never lessened her shine, and Jessie always remained psitive thrughut it all",说明Jessie是一位乐观的女孩;文中文中第三段提到“Lking ut at the ther children wh were als ging thrugh cancer treatment, she asked her parents: “Hw can we help them?”,说明Jessie是一位有同情心的人,故B选项正确。
文章多次提到“mvement”(运动)一词,如“analyze data f ice mvements”和“understand the mvement f the Antarctic ice sheet",表明研究的重点是了解南极冰盖的运动规律,而不是预测未来变化(A)、分析冰盖厚度(B)或研究海水冰的物理性质(D)。
文章中提到“the extensin zne, it is nt the case”,这里的“it”指的是冰的物理性质在各个方向上都相同的情况。 因此,“it is nt the case”意味着冰在各个方向上的行为是不同的(A)。
文章最后提到,“cntinue t perfect their analysis with additinal data frm the Antarctic cntinent”可知,研究人员未来的计划是寻找更多数据来改进他们的分析(D)。
第二段提到“This well-knwn feature f hw memry wrks in the brain facilitates string infrmatin in small grups ver time, rather than a big grup at nce.”
第四段提到“Depending n hw much light the glwing prtein prduces we knw hw strng that memry gene was turned n”,可推断出萤火虫的发光蛋白质用于检测基因激活程度。 D项信息错误,由第四段“ chemical pulses that cpy the signals that activate the memry activatin pathways in neurns”可知人工化学脉冲模仿神经元中记忆激活通路的信号。
最后一段提到“Maybe we need t cnsider nt just..., but what is the time pattemn f that drug..”,这说明Kukushkin关于癌症治疗建议考虑药物的“时间模式”。 B项“找到有效的学习策略”,是对“ as we think abut hw t learn mre efficiently”的错误推理。
由第一段“ utside the brain, kidney cells can als stre infrmatin and recgnize patterns in a similar way t neurns”和全文内容可知,本文主要介绍新研究发现肾细胞也能用类似神经元的机制存储信息,及肾细胞也拥有记忆能力。

      62. a 考查不定冠词a。
根据时间状语In the future.
