Like many ther students beginning graduate schl, I was quickly charged with respnsibilities and had t find time fr studying by letting g f many ther things I valued. Letting g f ftball and the vilin was, hwever, self-defeating: it might have brught me mre time in the shrt term, but spending that extra time n wrk nly’ made me mre stressed and less prductive.
Twards the end f the MSC (Master f Science prgram) started t lse my mtivatin and curisity fr science and research, as well as my creativity. Spending s much time and energy in the labratry, and fcusing all my attentin n my thesis and curses, made me feel dwn and almst ttally uninterested in my field - nt t mentin shrt-tempered and versensitive in my persnal cmmunicatins.
Over time, I learnt frm these experiences. When I started my PhD, I fcused n balancing academic success with persnal time-ff, and made persnal happiness a pririty (首要事情) in my weekly schedule. My mentr (导师) and I discussed my wrk-life balance early in my prgram, and we arrange ur lab respnsibilities accrdingly.
I set bundaries fr myself in new ways: ‘rather than ding lab wrk all weekend, I’d play ftball r the vilin, r visit lved nes, befre allwing myself t wrk fra few hurs.
This was hard at first: I wrried that it wuld affect my standing with my peers, and superirs, but I had learnt frm experiences that an verladed schedule can drain (使疲劳) yu s much that yu becme unfcused and start making mistakes r frgetting imprtant details.
Since establishing a better wrk-life balance, I’ve been ding well in graduate schl. Outside the lab, I’ve been able t take up a few leadership psitins at my university because I’m nt as stressed with my wrk. I serve as ur department’s student cuncilr and I am als vice-president academic in the Health Sciences Graduate Students’ Assciatin. My advice is this: a healthy wrk-life balance isn’t a luxury; it’s a key part f success in graduate prgrams.

Ralph Emersn nce said that the purpse f life is nt t be happy but t be useful, t be lving, t make sme difference in he wrld. While we appreciate such wrds f wisdm, we rarely try t fllw them in ur lives.
Mst peple prefer t live a gd life themselves, ignring their respnsibilities fr the wrld. This narrw perceptin f a gd life may prvide shrt-term benefits, but is sure t lead t lng-term harm and suffering. A gd life based n cmfrt and luxury may eventually lead t mre pain be-cause we spil ur health and even ur character, principles, ideals, and relatinships.
What then, is the secret f a gd life? A gd life is a prcess, nt a state f being : a directin, nt a destinatin. We have t earn a gd life by first serving thers withut any expectatin in return because their happiness is the very surce f ur wn happiness. Mre imprtantly, we must knw urselves inside ut. Only when we examine urselves deeply can we discver ur abilities and recgnize ur limitatins, and then wrk accrdingly t create a better wrld.
The first requirement fr a gd life is having a lving heart. When we d certain right things merely as a duty, we find ur jb s tiresme that we’ll sn burn ut. Hwever, when we d that same jb ut f lve, we nt nly enjy what we d, but als d it with an effrtless feeling.
Hwever, lve alne is insufficient t lead a gd life. Lve smetimes blinds us t the reality. Cnsequently, ur gd intentins may nt lead t gd results. T achieve desired utcme, thse wh want t d gd t thers als need t equip themselves with accurate wrld knwledge. False knwledge is mre dangerus than ignrance. If lve is the engine f a car knwledge is the steering wheel(方向盘). If the engine lacks pwer, the car can’t mve; if the driver lses cntrl f the steering, a rad accident prbably ccurs. Only with lve in heart and the right knwledge in mind can we lead a gd life.
With lve and knwledge, we g all ut t create a better wrld by ding gd t thers. When we see the impact f ur gd wrk n the wrld we give meaning t ur life and earn lasting jy and happiness.
      51. What effect des the narrw perceptin f a gd life have n us?
      A. Making us simple-mindedB. Making us shrt-sighted.
      C. Leading us nt a busy rad.D. Keeping us frm cmfrt and luxury.
      52. Accrding t the authr, hw can ne gain true happiness?
      A. Thrugh maintaining gd health.
      B. By ging thrugh pain and suffering.
      C. By recgnizing ne’s abilities and limitatins.
      D. Thrugh ffering help much needed by thers.
      53. Accrding t Paragraph 4, ding certain right things with a lving heart makes ne________.
      A. less selfishB. less annying
      C. mre mtivatedD. mre respnsible
      54. In what case may gd intentins fail t lead t desired results?
      A. When we have wrng knwledge f the wrld.
      B. When ur lve fr the wrld is insufficient.

It has been five years since I left my staff jb and became self-emplyed. I remember my terrr as I walked ut f the ffice fr the last time and the excitement when I sld my first piece days later. Wrking fr yurself, setting yur wn hurs and being respnsible fr yur success r failure are exciting. I left my jb just as summer was starting, and my first few mnths were as blissful as the fair days.

There is n sick pay when yu are self-emplyed. Yu can’t d a bad day’s wrk and blame it n yur bss. Yu are the backbne f yur business and yu need t priritize yur health and well-being. Rest regularly and find like-minded peple t supprt yu and lift yu up when things get hard.

Only with lve in heart and the right knwledge in mind can we lead a gd life.
With lve and knwledge, we g all ut t create a better wrld by ding gd t thers. When we see the impact f ur gd wrk n the wrld we give meaning t ur life and earn lasting jy and happiness.
